Creative professional users musical relevance criteria
Although known item searching for music can be dealt with by searching metadata using existing text search techniques, human subjectivity and variability within the music itself make it very difficult to search for unknown items. This paper examines these problems within the context of text retrieval and music information retrieval. The focus is on ascertaining a relationship between music relevance criteria and those relating to relevance judgements in text retrieval. A data-rich collection of relevance judgements by creative professionals searching for unknown musical items to accompany moving images using real world queries is analysed. The participants in our observations are found to take a socio-cognitive approach and use a range of content and context based criteria. These criteria correlate strongly with those arising from previous text retrieval studies despite the many differences between music and text in their actual content
Exploiting `Subjective' Annotations
Many interesting phenomena in conversation can only be annotated as a subjective task, requiring interpretative judgements from annotators. This leads to data which is annotated with lower levels of agreement not only due to errors in the annotation, but also due to the differences in how annotators interpret conversations. This paper constitutes an attempt to find out how subjective annotations with a low level of agreement can profitably be used for machine learning purposes. We analyse the (dis)agreements between annotators for two different cases in a multimodal annotated corpus and explicitly relate the results to the way machine-learning algorithms perform on the annotated data. Finally we present two new concepts, namely `subjective entity' classifiers resp. `consensus objective' classifiers, and give recommendations for using subjective data in machine-learning applications.\u
A retrieval evaluation methodology for incomplete relevance assessments
In this paper we a propose an extended methodology for laboratory based Information Retrieval evaluation under in complete relevance assessments. This new protocol aims to identify potential uncertainty during system comparison that may result from incompleteness. We demonstrate how this methodology can lead towards a finer grained analysis of systems. This is advantageous, because the detection of uncertainty during the evaluation process can guide and direct researchers when evaluating new systems over existing and future test collections

Aspect-Controlled Neural Argument Generation
We rely on arguments in our daily lives to deliver our opinions and base them
on evidence, making them more convincing in turn. However, finding and
formulating arguments can be challenging. In this work, we train a language
model for argument generation that can be controlled on a fine-grained level to
generate sentence-level arguments for a given topic, stance, and aspect. We
define argument aspect detection as a necessary method to allow this
fine-granular control and crowdsource a dataset with 5,032 arguments annotated
with aspects. Our evaluation shows that our generation model is able to
generate high-quality, aspect-specific arguments. Moreover, these arguments can
be used to improve the performance of stance detection models via data
augmentation and to generate counter-arguments. We publish all datasets and
code to fine-tune the language model

The thesis of this study is to propose an extended methodology for laboratory based Information Retrieval evaluation under incomplete relevance assessments. This new methodology aims to identify potential uncertainty during system comparison that may result from incompleteness. The adoption of this methodology is advantageous, because the detection of epistemic uncertainty - the amount of knowledge (or ignorance) we have about the estimate of a system's performance - during the evaluation process can guide and direct researchers when evaluating new systems over existing and future test collections. Across a series of experiments we demonstrate how this methodology can lead towards a finer grained analysis of systems. In particular, we show through experimentation how the current practice in Information Retrieval evaluation of using a measurement depth larger than the pooling depth increases uncertainty during system comparison
