    Lex Informatica: The Formulation of Information Policy Rules through Technology

    Historically, law and government regulation have established default rules for information policy, including constitutional rules on freedom of expression and statutory rights of ownership of information. This Article will show that for network environments and the Information Society, however, law and government regulation are not the only source of rule-making. Technological capabilities and system design choices impose rules on participants. The creation and implementation of information policy are embedded in network designs and standards as well as in system configurations. Even user preferences and technical choices create overarching, local default rules. This Article argues, in essence, that the set of rules for information flows imposed by technology and communication networks form a “Lex Informatica” that policymakers must understand, consciously recognize, and encourage

    An Exploratory Study of Consumer Adoption of Online Shopping: Mediating Effect of Online Purchase Intention

    An exploratory study was conducted to investigate consumer adoption of online purchase using a survey data set. Based upon the theory of innovation and self-efficacy theory, risk aversion, online proficiency, shopping convenience, and product choice variety were proposed to influence consumer intention to shop online, which, in turn, affects online purchases. Results of regression analyses revealed that all but shopping convenience were significant predictors of consumer intention to purchase online. In addition, consumer intention directly determines consumer purchases online. Finally, consumer intention to purchase online mediates the relationship of risk aversion, shopping convenience, and product choice variety to online shopping. Research and managerial implications of the findings were discussed

    Secure Multi-Path Selection with Optimal Controller Placement Using Hybrid Software-Defined Networks with Optimization Algorithm

    The Internet's growth in popularity requires computer networks for both agility and resilience. Recently, unable to satisfy the computer needs for traditional networking systems. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is known as a paradigm shift in the networking industry. Many organizations are used SDN due to their efficiency of transmission. Striking the right balance between SDN and legacy switching capabilities will enable successful network scenarios in architecture networks. Therefore, this object grand scenario for a hybrid network where the external perimeter transport device is replaced with an SDN device in the service provider network. With the moving away from older networks to SDN, hybrid SDN includes both legacy and SDN switches. Existing models of SDN have limitations such as overfitting, local optimal trapping, and poor path selection efficiency. This paper proposed a Deep Kronecker Neural Network (DKNN) to improve its efficiency with a moderate optimization method for multipath selection in SDN. Dynamic resource scheduling is used for the reward function the learning performance is improved by the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) technique. The controller for centralised SDN acts as a network brain in the control plane. Among the most important duties network is selected for the best SDN controller. It is vulnerable to invasions and the controller becomes a network bottleneck. This study presents an intrusion detection system (IDS) based on the SDN model that runs as an application module within the controller. Therefore, this study suggested the feature extraction and classification of contractive auto-encoder with a triple attention-based classifier. Additionally, this study leveraged the best performing SDN controllers on which many other SDN controllers are based on OpenDayLight (ODL) provides an open northbound API and supports multiple southbound protocols. Therefore, one of the main issues in the multi-controller placement problem (CPP) that addresses needed in the setting of SDN specifically when different aspects in interruption, ability, authenticity and load distribution are being considered. Introducing the scenario concept, CPP is formulated as a robust optimization problem that considers changes in network status due to power outages, controller’s capacity, load fluctuations and changes in switches demand. Therefore, to improve network performance, it is planned to improve the optimal amount of controller placements by simulated annealing using different topologies the modified Dragonfly optimization algorithm (MDOA)

    The Impact of Petri Nets on System-of-Systems Engineering

    The successful engineering of a large-scale system-of-systems project towards deterministic behaviour depends on integrating autonomous components using international communications standards in accordance with dynamic requirements. To-date, their engineering has been unsuccessful: no combination of top-down and bottom-up engineering perspectives is adopted, and information exchange protocol and interfaces between components are not being precisely specified. Various approaches such as modelling, and architecture frameworks make positive contributions to system-of-systems specification but their successful implementation is still a problem. One of the most popular modelling notations available for specifying systems, UML, is intuitive and graphical but also ambiguous and imprecise. Supplying a range of diagrams to represent a system under development, UML lacks simulation and exhaustive verification capability. This shortfall in UML has received little attention in the context of system-of-systems and there are two major research issues: 1. Where the dynamic, behavioural diagrams of UML can and cannot be used to model and analyse system-of-systems 2. Determining how Petri nets can be used to improve the specification and analysis of the dynamic model of a system-of-systems specified using UML This thesis presents the strengths and weaknesses of Petri nets in relation to the specification of system-of-systems and shows how Petri net models can be used instead of conventional UML Activity Diagrams. The model of the system-of-systems can then be analysed and verified using Petri net theory. The Petri net formalism of behaviour is demonstrated using two case studies from the military domain. The first case study uses Petri nets to specify and analyse a close air support mission. This case study concludes by indicating the strengths, weaknesses, and shortfalls of the proposed formalism in system-of-systems specification. The second case study considers specification of a military exchange network parameters problem and the results are compared with the strengths and weaknesses identified in the first case study. Finally, the results of the research are formulated in the form of a Petri net enhancement to UML (mapping existing activity diagram elements to Petri net elements) to meet the needs of system-of-systems specification, verification and validation

    An Examination of Railroad Capacity and its Implications for Rail-Highway Intermodal Transportation

    After many years of decline in market share, railroads are now experiencing an increasing demand for their services. Service intensive intermodal transportation seems to be an especially promising market area. Since the historic decline in traffic has been accompanied by a reduction in network infrastructure, however, the railroads\u27 ability to handle sizable traffic increases, at least in the short term, is in question. Since rail transportation is critical to the domestic economy of the nation, and is increasingly important in international logistics channels, shortfalls in railroad capacity are not desirable. The published literature on railroad capacity is relatively sparse, especially in comparison to the highway mode. Much of what is available pertains to individual network components such as lines or terminals. Evaluation of system capacity, considering the interactive effects of traffic flowing through a network of lines and terminals, has received less attention. A tool specifically designed for evaluating freight railroad system capacity issues could be a useful addition to the rail analyst\u27s toolbox. The research conducted in this study resulted in the formulation and application of RAILNET, a multicomrnodity, multicarrier network model for predicting equilibrium flows within a railroad network. Designed for strategic planning with a short term horizon, the model assumes fixed external demand. The predicted flows meet the conditions for Wardropian system equilibrium. At completion, the solution algorithm predicts the expected delay per train on each link, allowing the analyst to identify areas of congestion. Following completion of the model, it was applied to a case study examining the railroad network in the southeastern U.S. The public use version of the Interstate Commerce Commission\u27s Commodity Waybill Sample (CWS) provided flow data. The dissertation describes the procedure used to develop the case study and presents some results. The case points to major deficiencies in the CWS data which resulted in substantially less traffic in the network than is actually present. In general, given this limitation, the model behaved well and results appear reasonable, although not necessarily reflective of actual network conditions
