Kompics: a message-passing component model for building distributed systems

The Kompics component model and programming framework was designedto simplify the development of increasingly complex distributed systems. Systems built with Kompics leverage multi-core machines out of the box and they can be dynamically reconfigured to support hot software upgrades. A simulation framework enables deterministic debugging and reproducible performance evaluation of unmodified Kompics distributed systems. We describe the component model and show how to program and compose event-based distributed systems. We present the architectural patterns and abstractions that Kompics facilitates and we highlight a case study of a complex distributed middleware that we have built with Kompics. We show how our approach enables systematic development and evaluation of large-scale and dynamic distributed systems

A Distributed Algorithm For Large-Scale Graph Partitioning

Detta kandidatarbete har sin placering på Skeppsbron/Skeppsbrokajen i centrala Stockholm. Inriktningen jag valde var att rita ett förslag för en fiskmarknad som skulle placeras på denna plats. Mitt arbete har fått inspireras av Sveriges största och mest kända fiskmarknad, Feskekörkan, i Göteborg. Analyser av Feskekörkan som organisation och dess planlösning har i mitt arbete lett till en tektoniskt uppbyggd struktur där material byggnadskonstruktion var viktiga element. Med bland annat en fiskfjällsfasad i mässing och en bärande skelett av storskaliga limträbalkar. Platsen som byggnaden ligger på är ett välbesökt promenadstråk med en bred och lång kajkant som används flitigt av såväl, turister som besöker gamla stan och det kungliga slottet, och Stockholmare som tar sig mellan Södermalm och Norrmalm. Jag har valt att bebygga platsen på ett sätt som både tar vara på det vackra promenadstråket men också ger möjlighet för besökande att stanna upp och ta del av fiskmarknaden.This candidate's work has its placement on Skeppsbron/Skeppsbrokajen in the central area of Stockholm. The focus I chose was to draw a proposal for a fishmarket that would be placed at this location. My work has been inspired by the largest and most famous fish market in Sweden, Feskekörkan, in Gothenburg. Analyses of Feskekörkan’s organization and its plan has, in my work, led to a tectonically constructed structure where building materials were important elements. Including a fish scale facade made of brass and a bearing skeleton of large glulam beams. The place which the building is situated on a popular promenade with a broad and long quay which is widely used by both, tourists visiting the Old Town and the Royal Palace, and the Stockholm citizens who ride between Södermalm and Norrmalm. I have chosen to build on the site in a way that both takes advantage of the beautiful promenade but also provides the opportunity for visitors to stop and take some of the fish market

Analog to Digital: Harnessing Peer Computing

Twenty years ago the recording industry alleged consumers were killing music sales by recording their own cassette tapes at home. Today, this argument is directed at peer-to-peer (P2P) networks: Illegal file-sharing kills the sales of recorded music. In an effort to determine copyright law\u27s affect on innovation in peer comuting, this Note examines the recording industry\u27s response to P2P networks. The recording industry employs five strategies: (I) public education; (2) licensed online music subscription services; (3) warnings, injunctions, and enforcement; (4) Digital Rights Management; and (5) lobbying Congress for expanded copyright protection. However, the industry\u27s strategy also chills investment in peer computing and drives development in unpredictable directions. While P2P networks are rife with copyrighted works, innovative uses of peer communication are also reshaping how Americans consume and distribute content. In many ways, innovation in peer computing might determine the future of communication. The recording industry and Congress have a choice: shape a future for peer computing, or eliminate a novel form of communication

Intention-oriented programming support for runtime adaptive autonomic cloud-based applications

The continuing high rate of advances in information and communication systems technology creates many new commercial opportunities but also engenders a range of new technical challenges around maximising systems' dependability, availability, adaptability, and auditability. These challenges are under active research, with notable progress made in the support for dependable software design and management. Runtime support, however, is still in its infancy and requires further research. This paper focuses on a requirements model for the runtime execution and control of an intention-oriented Cloud-Based Application. Thus, a novel requirements modelling process referred to as Provision, Assurance and Auditing, and an associated framework are defined and developed where a given system's non/functional requirements are modelled in terms of intentions and encoded in a standard open mark-up language. An autonomic intention-oriented programming model, using the Neptune language, then handles its deployment and execution. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved

This paper advocates controlling crime through a greater emphasis on precautions taken not by individuals, but by communities. The dominant battles in the literature today posit two central competing models of crime control. In one, the standard policing model, the government is responsible for the variety of acts that are necessary to deter and prosecute criminal acts. In the other, private self-help, public law enforcement is largely supplanted by providing incentives to individuals to self-protect against crime.
