A Hypothetical Database-Driven Web-Based Meteorological Weather Station with Dynamic Datalogger System

This paper proposes the development and implementation strategies of a hypothetical database-driven web-based meteorological (meteo) weather station with a dynamic datalogger system to provide up-to-the-minute real-time ground-based weather information online to any interested client. The meteo weather station will provide weather data/information for eight parameters namely: relative humidity; solar radiance; wind speed; wind direction; barometric pressure; temperature; nefobasimeter for monitoring and measuring cloud height, thickness and number of layers detection; and rainfall. The hypothetical design present techniques that can be used to capture and log meteo data in a dynamic relational database management system (DRDBMS) and implements a TCP/IP network server. The meteo weather information will be collected from sensors incorporated into measuring instruments and transmitted via 1–Wire network and stored in the TINI’s non–volatile static random access memory (NV-SRAM). The TINI processes and uploads the information over a TCP/IP network via a switch, router, common gateway interface (CGI), very small aperture terminal (VSAT) via an Internet service provider (ISP) to the Internet for any interested user in the world. More so, although the acquired data will be made available as they are being logged to both the Internet and the database (DRDBMS) but the data will be automatically deleted every 24 hours at 00:00G MT from the TINI’s NV-SRAM to free the memory for the next day data at the same 00:00G MT. As a result of this, the DRDBMS which is an object for data/information storage using the MySQL stores the meteo data/information which can be retrieved by any interested client on request. However, the request will be made possible via the use of web pages, where the each meteo data/information will be displayed and accessed using special user login codes (username and password) upon subscription. Development of My Footprint Calculator

    Get PDF
The Environmental footprint is a very powerful tool that helps an individual to understand how their everyday activities are impacting environmental surroundings. Data shows that global climate change, which is a growing concern for nations all over the world, is already affecting humankind, plants and animals through raising ocean levels, droughts & desertification and changing weather patterns. In addition to a wide range of policy measures implemented by national and state governments, it is necessary for individuals to understand the impact that their lifestyle may have on their personal environmental footprint, and thus over the global climate change. “My Footprint Calculator” (myfootprintcalculator.com) has been designed to be one the simplest, yet comprehensive, web tools to help individuals calculate and understand their personal environmental impact. “My Footprint Calculator” is a website that queries users about their everyday habits and activities and calculates their personal impact on the environment. This website was re-designed to help users determine their environmental impact in various aspects of their lives ranging from transportation and recycling habits to water and energy usage with the addition of new features that will allow users to share their experiences and their best practices with other users interested in reducing their personal Environmental footprint. The collected data is stored in the database and a future goal of this work plans to analyze the collected data from all users (anonymously) for developing relevant trends and statistics

Intelligent query for real estate search

    Get PDF
The purpose of this project is to improve search query accuracy in a real estate website by developing an intelligent query system which provides the best matching result for standard search criteria. This intelligent query website utilizes fuzzy logic and partial membership to filter query results based on user input data. Fuzzy logic helps obtain results that are otherwise not attainable from a non-fuzzy search. A non-fuzzy search entails search results that match exactly with the given criteria. This project also allows a user to do a free keyword search. This type of search uses synonyms of the keywords to query for houses. The resulting information will be more credible and precise than the traditional website because it provides a reasonable result, of the specified search, to the user

    Networked Occupancy Sensor System

Energy is often wasted on systems that are used to provide services such as light, heating, air conditioning and ventilation. If these services were intelligently controlled, there is potential for significant improvements in energy conservation. A system including room sensors, database, and webserver was designed, constructed, and implemented over the course of this project. Sensors report occupancy and light status and temperature. Real-time room data is available via the webserver and is archived in the database. The system is networked via Ethernet and powered using the power over Ethernet (802.3af) standard

A unified ontology-based data integration approach for the internet of things

    Get PDF
Data integration enables combining data from various data sources in a standard format. Internet of things (IoT) applications use ontology approaches to provide a machine-understandable conceptualization of a domain. We propose a unified ontology schema approach to solve all IoT integration problems at once. The data unification layer maps data from different formats to data patterns based on the unified ontology model. This paper proposes a middleware consisting of an ontology-based approach that collects data from different devices. IoT middleware requires an additional semantic layer for cloud-based IoT platforms to build a schema for data generated from diverse sources. We tested the proposed model on real data consisting of approximately 160,000 readings from various sources in different formats like CSV, JSON, raw data, and XML. The data were collected through the file transfer protocol (FTP) and generated 960,000 resource description framework (RDF) triples. We evaluated the proposed approach by running different queries on different machines on SPARQL protocol and RDF query language (SPARQL) endpoints to check query processing time, validation of integration, and performance of the unified ontology model. The average response time for query execution on generated RDF triples on the three servers were approximately 0.144 seconds, 0.070 seconds, 0.062 seconds, respectively

Study of the development of an Io T-based sensor platform for e-agriculture

    Get PDF
E-agriculture, sometimes reffered as 'ICT in agriculture' (Information and Communication technologies) or simply "smart agriculture", is a relatively recent and emerging field focused on the enhacement on agricultural and rural development through improved information and communication processes. This concept, involves the design, development, evaluation and application of innovative ways to use IoT technologies in the rural domain, with a primary focus on agriculture, in order to achieve better ways of growing food for the masses with sustainability. In IoT-based agriculture, platforms are built for monitoring the crop field with the help of sensors (light, humidity, temperature, soil moisture, etc.) and automating the irrigation system. The farmers can monitor the field conditions from anywhere and highly more efficient compared to conventional approaches

Improved Transition of Instruments and Database Management at the Blue Hill Observatory

    Get PDF
The Blue Hill Observatory and Science Center, founded in 1885, has held the longest active climate record to date. This observatory has maintained the same weather measuring instruments for many years and these instruments require a consistent system of transition. The first goal of this project was to develop a system for the transition of instruments in order for previously recorded data to be consistent to the future data collected. The data storage at the observatory has been either hand-written or electronic data forms. For the second goal of our project, we developed a prototype database that will consolidate all of the weather data recorded into one consistent form
