    Enhanced cell controller for aerospace manufacturing

    Aerospace manufacturing industry is unique in that production typically focuses on high variety and quality but extremely low volume. Manufacturing processes are also sometimes unique and not repeatable and, hence, costly. Production is getting more expensive with the introduction of industrial robots and their cells. This paper describes the development of the Flexa Cell Coordinator (FCC), a system that is providing a solution to manage resources at assembly cell level. It can control, organise and coordinate between the resources and is capable of controlling remote cells and resources because of its distributed nature. It also gives insight of a system to the higher management via its rich reporting facility and connectivity with company systems e.g., Enterprise Resource Planner (ERP). It is able to control various kinds of cells and resources (network based) which are not limited to robots and machines. It is extendable and capable of adding multiple numbers of cells inside the system. It also provides the facility of scheduling the task to avoid the deadlocking in the process. In FCC resources (e.g., tracker) can also be shared between cells

    A Holonic Workforce Sizing Model Based on Demand Trend and Disturbance Rate in Job-shop Production

    This paper presents a job-shop workforce sizing method developed in the light of Holonic Manufacturing System (HMS). As one of the management paradigms gaining attention worldwide, HMS represents a novel methodology that integrates computers, machines, and humans into a single function unit capable to cope with dynamics in the business environment. Over the decades, the concepts of holons and holonic systems have been adopted in many research fields, but they are scarcely attempted on labour planning. A literature gap exists, thus motivating the author to come up with a holonic model that uses exponential smoothing to forecast some quantitative variables in labour-intensive production. These varying parameters include the machine utilisation that reflects the demand and the worker absenteeism and turnover that constitute the disturbance. Collective equations are formulated to periodically compute the number of workers required. For model validation purpose, twenty-four-month data analysis is conducted on a mock-up basis

    An agent based architecture to support monitoring in plug and produce manufacturing systems using knowledge extraction

    In recent years a set of production paradigms were proposed in order to capacitate manufacturers to meet the new market requirements, such as the shift in demand for highly customized products resulting in a shorter product life cycle, rather than the traditional mass production standardized consumables. These new paradigms advocate solutions capable of facing these requirements, empowering manufacturing systems with a high capacity to adapt along with elevated flexibility and robustness in order to deal with disturbances, like unexpected orders or malfunctions. Evolvable Production Systems propose a solution based on the usage of modularity and self-organization with a fine granularity level, supporting pluggability and in this way allowing companies to add and/or remove components during execution without any extra re-programming effort. However, current monitoring software was not designed to fully support these characteristics, being commonly based on centralized SCADA systems, incapable of re-adapting during execution to the unexpected plugging/unplugging of devices nor changes in the entire system’s topology. Considering these aspects, the work developed for this thesis encompasses a fully distributed agent-based architecture, capable of performing knowledge extraction at different levels of abstraction without sacrificing the capacity to add and/or remove monitoring entities, responsible for data extraction and analysis, during runtime

    Experimental validation of ADACOR holonic control system

    In the last years, several manufacturing control architectures using emergent paradigms and technologies, such as multi-agent and holonic manufacturing systems, have been proposed to address the challenge of developing control systems capable of handling certain types of disturbances at the factory level. One of these holonic architectures is ADACOR, which integrates a set of paradigms and technologies for distributed manufacturing systems complemented by formal modelling techniques, to achieve a flexible and adaptive holonic/collaborative control architecture. The results obtained in the first experiments using the ADACOR architecture are presented in this paper, and also compared to the results produced by other control architectures. For this purpose a set of quantitative and qualitative parameters were measured, to evaluate static and dynamic performance of the control architectures

    Implementation and validation of a holonic manufacturing control system

    Flexible manufacturing systems are complex, stochastic environments requiring the development of innovative, intelligent control architectures that support agility and re-configurability. ADACOR holonic control system addresses this challenge by introducing an adaptive production control approach supported by the presence of supervisor entities and the self-organization capabilities associated to each ADACOR holon. The validation of the concepts proposed by ADACOR control system requires their implementation and experimental testing, to analyze their correctness, applicability and merits. This paper describes the implementation of ADACOR concepts in a flexible manufacturing system, verifies their correctness and applicability, and evaluates the ADACOR control system performance, considering not only quantitative indicators directly related to production parameters, e.g. manufacturing lead time, but also qualitative indicators, such as the agility

    Automated experience-based learning for plug and produce assembly systems

    YesThis paper presents a self-learning technique for adapting modular automated assembly systems. The technique consists of automatically analysing sensor data and acquiring experience on the changes made on an assembly system to cope with new production requirements or to recover from disruptions. Experience is generalised into operational knowledge that is used to aid engineers in future adaptations by guiding them throughout the process. At each step, applicable changes are presented and ranked based on: (1) similarity between the current context and those in the experience base; (2) estimate of the impact on system performance. The experience model and the self-learning technique reflect the modular structure of the assembly machine and are particularly suitable for plug and produce systems, which are designed to offer high levels of self-organisation and adaptability. Adaptations can be performed and evaluated at different levels: from the smallest pluggable unit to the whole assembly system. Knowledge on individual modules can be reused when modules are plugged into other systems. An experimental evaluation has been conducted on an industrial case study and the results show that, with experience-based learning, adaptations of plug and produce systems can be performed in a shorter time.European Union [grant number 314762]

    KeyStroke Dynamics - Dangling Issues of Providing Authentication by Recognising User Input

    A behavioral biometric such as keystroke dynamics which makes use of the typing cadence of an Individual can be used to strengthen existing security techniques effectively and cheaply. Due to the ballistic (semi-autonomous) nature of the typing behavior it is difficult to impersonate, making it useful as a biometric. Therefore in this paper, we provide a basic background of the behavioural basis behind the use of keystroke dynamics. We also discuss the data acquisition methods, approaches and the performance of the methods used by researchers on standard computer keyboards. In this survey, we find that the use and acceptance of this biometric could be increased by development of standardized databases, assignment of nomenclature for features, development of common data interchange formats, establishment of protocols for evaluating methods, and resolution of privacy issues.
