    Highly accurate and fully automatic 3D head pose estimation and eye gaze estimation using RGB-D sensors and 3D morphable models

    The research presented in the paper was funded by grant F506-FSA of the Auto21 Networks of Centers of Excellence Program of Canada.This work addresses the problem of automatic head pose estimation and its application in 3D gaze estimation using low quality RGB-D sensors without any subject cooperation or manual intervention. The previous works on 3D head pose estimation using RGB-D sensors require either an offline step for supervised learning or 3D head model construction, which may require manual intervention or subject cooperation for complete head model reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a 3D pose estimator based on low quality depth data, which is not limited by any of the aforementioned steps. Instead, the proposed technique relies on modeling the subject's face in 3D rather than the complete head, which, in turn, relaxes all of the constraints in the previous works. The proposed method is robust, highly accurate and fully automatic. Moreover, it does not need any offline step. Unlike some of the previous works, the method only uses depth data for pose estimation. The experimental results on the Biwi head pose database confirm the efficiency of our algorithm in handling large pose variations and partial occlusion. We also evaluated the performance of our algorithm on IDIAP database for 3D head pose and eye gaze estimation.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    AFFECT-PRESERVING VISUAL PRIVACY PROTECTION

    The prevalence of wireless networks and the convenience of mobile cameras enable many new video applications other than security and entertainment. From behavioral diagnosis to wellness monitoring, cameras are increasing used for observations in various educational and medical settings. Videos collected for such applications are considered protected health information under privacy laws in many countries. Visual privacy protection techniques, such as blurring or object removal, can be used to mitigate privacy concern, but they also obliterate important visual cues of affect and social behaviors that are crucial for the target applications. In this dissertation, we propose to balance the privacy protection and the utility of the data by preserving the privacy-insensitive information, such as pose and expression, which is useful in many applications involving visual understanding. The Intellectual Merits of the dissertation include a novel framework for visual privacy protection by manipulating facial image and body shape of individuals, which: (1) is able to conceal the identity of individuals; (2) provide a way to preserve the utility of the data, such as expression and pose information; (3) balance the utility of the data and capacity of the privacy protection. The Broader Impacts of the dissertation focus on the significance of privacy protection on visual data, and the inadequacy of current privacy enhancing technologies in preserving affect and behavioral attributes of the visual content, which are highly useful for behavior observation in educational and medical settings. This work in this dissertation represents one of the first attempts in achieving both goals simultaneously

    3D Face Modelling, Analysis and Synthesis

    Human faces have always been of a special interest to researchers in the computer vision and graphics areas. There has been an explosion in the number of studies around accurately modelling, analysing and synthesising realistic faces for various applications. The importance of human faces emerges from the fact that they are invaluable means of effective communication, recognition, behaviour analysis, conveying emotions, etc. Therefore, addressing the automatic visual perception of human faces efficiently could open up many influential applications in various domains, e.g. virtual/augmented reality, computer-aided surgeries, security and surveillance, entertainment, and many more. However, the vast variability associated with the geometry and appearance of human faces captured in unconstrained videos and images renders their automatic analysis and understanding very challenging even today. The primary objective of this thesis is to develop novel methodologies of 3D computer vision for human faces that go beyond the state of the art and achieve unprecedented quality and robustness. In more detail, this thesis advances the state of the art in 3D facial shape reconstruction and tracking, fine-grained 3D facial motion estimation, expression recognition and facial synthesis with the aid of 3D face modelling. We give a special attention to the case where the input comes from monocular imagery data captured under uncontrolled settings, a.k.a. \textit{in-the-wild} data. This kind of data are available in abundance nowadays on the internet. Analysing these data pushes the boundaries of currently available computer vision algorithms and opens up many new crucial applications in the industry. We define the four targeted vision problems (3D facial reconstruction &\& tracking, fine-grained 3D facial motion estimation, expression recognition, facial synthesis) in this thesis as the four 3D-based essential systems for the automatic facial behaviour understanding and show how they rely on each other. Finally, to aid the research conducted in this thesis, we collect and annotate a large-scale videos dataset of monocular facial performances. All of our proposed methods demonstarte very promising quantitative and qualitative results when compared to the state-of-the-art methods

    3D Gaze Estimation from Remote RGB-D Sensors

    The development of systems able to retrieve and characterise the state of humans is important for many applications and fields of study. In particular, as a display of attention and interest, gaze is a fundamental cue in understanding people activities, behaviors, intentions, state of mind and personality. Moreover, gaze plays a major role in the communication process, like for showing attention to the speaker, indicating who is addressed or averting gaze to keep the floor. Therefore, many applications within the fields of human-human, human-robot and human-computer interaction could benefit from gaze sensing. However, despite significant advances during more than three decades of research, current gaze estimation technologies can not address the conditions often required within these fields, such as remote sensing, unconstrained user movements and minimum user calibration. Furthermore, to reduce cost, it is preferable to rely on consumer sensors, but this usually leads to low resolution and low contrast images that current techniques can hardly cope with. In this thesis we investigate the problem of automatic gaze estimation under head pose variations, low resolution sensing and different levels of user calibration, including the uncalibrated case. We propose to build a non-intrusive gaze estimation system based on remote consumer RGB-D sensors. In this context, we propose algorithmic solutions which overcome many of the limitations of previous systems. We thus address the main aspects of this problem: 3D head pose tracking, 3D gaze estimation, and gaze based application modeling. First, we develop an accurate model-based 3D head pose tracking system which adapts to the participant without requiring explicit actions. Second, to achieve a head pose invariant gaze estimation, we propose a method to correct the eye image appearance variations due to head pose. We then investigate on two different methodologies to infer the 3D gaze direction. The first one builds upon machine learning regression techniques. In this context, we propose strategies to improve their generalization, in particular, to handle different people. The second methodology is a new paradigm we propose and call geometric generative gaze estimation. This novel approach combines the benefits of geometric eye modeling (normally restricted to high resolution images due to the difficulty of feature extraction) with a stochastic segmentation process (adapted to low-resolution) within a Bayesian model allowing the decoupling of user specific geometry and session specific appearance parameters, along with the introduction of priors, which are appropriate for adaptation relying on small amounts of data. The aforementioned gaze estimation methods are validated through extensive experiments in a comprehensive database which we collected and made publicly available. Finally, we study the problem of automatic gaze coding in natural dyadic and group human interactions. The system builds upon the thesis contributions to handle unconstrained head movements and the lack of user calibration. It further exploits the 3D tracking of participants and their gaze to conduct a 3D geometric analysis within a multi-camera setup. Experiments on real and natural interactions demonstrate the system is highly accuracy. Overall, the methods developed in this dissertation are suitable for many applications, involving large diversity in terms of setup configuration, user calibration and mobility

    EgoFace: Egocentric Face Performance Capture and Videorealistic Reenactment

    Face performance capture and reenactment techniques use multiple cameras and sensors, positioned at a distance from the face or mounted on heavy wearable devices. This limits their applications in mobile and outdoor environments. We present EgoFace, a radically new lightweight setup for face performance capture and front-view videorealistic reenactment using a single egocentric RGB camera. Our lightweight setup allows operations in uncontrolled environments, and lends itself to telepresence applications such as video-conferencing from dynamic environments. The input image is projected into a low dimensional latent space of the facial expression parameters. Through careful adversarial training of the parameter-space synthetic rendering, a videorealistic animation is produced. Our problem is challenging as the human visual system is sensitive to the smallest face irregularities that could occur in the final results. This sensitivity is even stronger for video results. Our solution is trained in a pre-processing stage, through a supervised manner without manual annotations. EgoFace captures a wide variety of facial expressions, including mouth movements and asymmetrical expressions. It works under varying illuminations, background, movements, handles people from different ethnicities and can operate in real time

    Towards the Use of Social Interaction Conventions as Prior for Gaze Model Adaptation

    Gaze is an important non-verbal cue involved in many facets of social interactions like communication, attentiveness or attitudes. Nevertheless, extracting gaze directions visually and remotely usually suffers large errors because of low resolution images, inaccurate eye cropping, or large eye shape variations across the population, amongst others. This paper hypothesizes that these challenges can be addressed by exploiting multimodal social cues for gaze model adaptation on top of an head-pose independent 3D gaze estimation framework. First, a robust eye cropping refinement is achieved by combining a semantic face model with eye landmark detections. Investigations on whether temporal smoothing can overcome instantaneous refinement limitations is conducted. Secondly, to study whether social interaction convention could be used as priors for adaptation, we exploited the speaking status and head pose constraints to derive soft gaze labels and infer person-specific gaze bias using robust statistics. Experimental results on gaze coding in natural interactions from two different settings demonstrate that the two steps of our gaze adaptation method contribute to reduce gaze errors by a large margin over the baseline and can be generalized to several identities in challenging scenarios

    Face-from-Depth for Head Pose Estimation on Depth Images

    Depth cameras allow to set up reliable solutions for people monitoring and behavior understanding, especially when unstable or poor illumination conditions make unusable common RGB sensors. Therefore, we propose a complete framework for the estimation of the head and shoulder pose based on depth images only. A head detection and localization module is also included, in order to develop a complete end-to-end system. The core element of the framework is a Convolutional Neural Network, called POSEidon+, that receives as input three types of images and provides the 3D angles of the pose as output. Moreover, a Face-from-Depth component based on a Deterministic Conditional GAN model is able to hallucinate a face from the corresponding depth image. We empirically demonstrate that this positively impacts the system performances. We test the proposed framework on two public datasets, namely Biwi Kinect Head Pose and ICT-3DHP, and on Pandora, a new challenging dataset mainly inspired by the automotive setup. Experimental results show that our method overcomes several recent state-of-art works based on both intensity and depth input data, running in real-time at more than 30 frames per second
