    Nowadays, with the advancement of technology, world is trending toward high mobility and dynamics. In this context, intersection management (IM) as one of the most crucial elements of the transportation sector demands high attention. Today, road entities including infrastructures, vulnerable road users (VRUs) such as motorcycles, moped, scooters, pedestrians, bicycles, and other types of vehicles such as trucks, buses, cars, emergency vehicles, and railway vehicles like trains or trams are able to communicate cooperatively using vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications and provide traffic safety, efficiency, infotainment and ecological improvements. In this paper, we take into account different types of intersections in terms of signalized, semi-autonomous (hybrid) and autonomous intersections and conduct a comprehensive survey on various intersection management methods for heterogeneous connected vehicles (CVs). We consider heterogeneous classes of vehicles such as road and rail vehicles as well as VRUs including bicycles, scooters and motorcycles. All kinds of intersection goals, modeling, coordination architectures, scheduling policies are thoroughly discussed. Signalized and semi-autonomous intersections are assessed with respect to these parameters. We especially focus on autonomous intersection management (AIM) and categorize this section based on four major goals involving safety, efficiency, infotainment and environment. Each intersection goal provides an in-depth investigation on the corresponding literature from the aforementioned perspectives. Moreover, robustness and resiliency of IM are explored from diverse points of view encompassing sensors, information management and sharing, planning universal scheme, heterogeneous collaboration, vehicle classification, quality measurement, external factors, intersection types, localization faults, communication anomalies and channel optimization, synchronization, vehicle dynamics and model mismatch, model uncertainties, recovery, security and privacy

    In combination with the current developments in the area of automatically driving vehicles, the introduction of inter-vehicle communication plays a crucial role for realising the long-term objective of what is known as cooperative driving. A cornerstone for the expansion of automated vehicles is their thorough understanding of the current driving environment. For this purpose, each vehicle generates an environment model containing information about other perceived traffic participants and objects. Local perception sensors are important data providers for this model, as they contribute implicit knowledge about the environment. In combination with a direct communication link between traffic participants, explicit knowledge can be added to the environment model as well. The key concept developed within this thesis is called Collective Perception: it focuses on sharing data gathered by local perception sensors of one vehicle with other traffic participants by means of inter-vehicle communication. As a result of this concept, future applications relying on a comprehensive understanding of the current driving environment are made feasible. The analyses presented in this thesis employ a vehicular ad-hoc network (VANET) based on the standardised framework of the European IEEE 802.11p-based ITS G5 protocol stack for inter-vehicle communication. The effectiveness of the technology relies on an existing communication link between a sufficient number of communication partners - the critical mass. The expansion of inter-vehicle communication, however, can be supported by capacitating indirect effects. Collective Perception is one representative of these effects, as the information density within the network between the vehicles is increased, even at low market penetration rates. At the core of Collective Perception stands the introduction of a message format which serves as a vehicle for the exchange of sensor data within a VANET. The development of the message is influenced by two perspectives: First, the vehicle perspective affects the relevant contents of the message required by data-fusion processes and application algorithms. Second, from the network perspective, constraints resulting from the network stack and effects caused by congestion control mechanisms have to be considered. This thesis addresses both perspectives to develop a holistic concept for exchanging sensor data within a VANET.Im Zusammenhang mit den aktuellen Entwicklungen im Themenbereich automatisch fahrender Fahrzeuge spielt die Einführung der Fahrzeug-zu-Fahrzeug-Kommunikation eine zunehmend wichtige Rolle, um langfristig kooperatives Fahren zu realisieren. Eine Voraussetzung für dessen Umsetzung ist dabei die umfassende Wahrnehmung der aktuellen Fahrumgebung. Jedes Fahrzeug erstellt dafür ein sogenanntes Umfeldmodell, welches Informationen über andere Verkehrsteilnehmer und Objekte beinhaltet. Eine wichtige Datenquelle für dieses Modell sind zum einen lokale Umfeldsensoren, welche implizites Wissen über die aktuelle Fahrumgebung beisteuern. Zum anderen kann dem Umfeldmodell bei einer direkten Kommunikationsverbindung mit anderen Verkehrsteilnehmern auch explizites Wissen hinzugefügt werden. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird ein Konzept zur Realisierung der sogenannten kollektiven Wahrnehmung entwickelt: Hierbei wird Fahrzeugen der Austausch lokaler Sensordaten mit anderen Verkehrsteilnehmern unter Verwendung der Fahrzeug-zu-Fahrzeug-Kommunikation ermöglicht. Somit können zukünftige Fahrerassistenzfunktionen auf ein umfassenderes Umfeldmodell zugreifen. Den im Rahmen der Arbeit durchgeführten Analysen liegt ein fahrzeugbasiertes Ad-hoc Netzwerk zugrunde, welches auf dem europäischen IEEE 802.11p basierten ITS G5 Protokollstapel beruht. Die Effektivität der Technologie fußt hierbei auf der Existenz der sogenannten kritischen Masse: Eine ausreichende Anzahl an Kommunikationspartnern muss zugegen sein, damit der Technologie ein Nutzen zugemessen werden kann. Die Verbreitung der Technologie kann jedoch durch indirekte Effekte unterstützt werden. Die kollektive Wahrnehmung ist ein Repräsentant dieser indirekten Effekte, da die Informationsdichte in dem zwischen den Fahrzeugen bestehenden Netzwerk selbst bei niedrigen Marktausstattungsraten erhöht wird. Im Rahmen der Arbeit wird daher ein neues Nachrichtenformat entwickelt, welches von zwei Perspektiven beeinflusst: Die Sicht der fahrzeugseitigen Assistenzsysteme und deren Datenfusionsalgorithmen beeinflusst die notwendigen Inhalte der Nachricht. Weiterhin werden aus der Netzwerksicht durch Mechanismen wie denen der Lastkontrolle und den bestehenden Nachrichtengrößenbeschränkungen spezifische Anforderungen gestellt. Beide Untersuchungen werden dabei in der Arbeit zur Erstellung eines ganzheitlichen Konzeptes für die kollektive Wahrnehmung verbunden

    The Effects of Gap Junction Modulation on Myocardial Structure and Function

    The aim of the work in this thesis was to investigate the effects of gap junction modulation during acute myocardial infarction (MI) on ventricular arrhythmogenesis in the settings of acute reperfusion and chronic post-myocardial infarction. Ventricular arrhythmias can occur during reperfusion because of abrupt changes in electrophysiology, whilst arrhythmias occur post-MI because the healed infarct scar forms a substrate for re-entry, with increased inhomogeneity of scarring being associated with greater arrhythmia susceptibility. The effects gap junction modulation on reperfusion arrhythmogenesis were studied in an ex vivo rat model of acute ischaemia-reperfusion. Gap junction modulators were administered to hearts subjected to left anterior descending artery occlusion followed by reperfusion. The electrophysiological changes that accompany ischaemia-reperfusion were studied using optical mapping. Gap junction modulators, AAP10 and carbenoxolone, reduced the incidence of reperfusion arrhythmias. This was associated with the attenuation of the abrupt recovery of conduction during reperfusion, which may underlie their antiarrhythmic effects. A four-week rat chronic myocardial infarction model was developed to study the effects of acute gap junction modulation on late post-MI arrhythmias. Gap junction modulators, rotigaptide and carbenoxolone, were administered acutely for 7 days from the time of surgical MI, and rats were studied at 4 weeks post-MI with ECG-telemetry, programmed electrical stimulation, optical mapping, histomorphometry and connexin43 immunohistochemistry. Enhancing gap junction coupling with rotigaptide acutely during MI reduced heterogeneities in infarct border zone scarring and reduced susceptibility to ventricular arrhythmias on programmed electrical stimulation. Histomorphometric studies support a possible mechanism whereby homogenisation of the acute ischaemic insult and the cell death process may result in more homogeneous scarring and a less arrhythmic healed substrate. Gap junction modulation was anti-arrhythmic in the acute reperfusion setting, and the enhancement of coupling during acute MI may represent a novel therapeutic strategy to modify the morphology of the healed infarct and alter post-infarction arrhythmia susceptibility

Um dos motivos para um maior tráfego de veículos é o vertiginoso crescimento populacional dos centros urbanos. Além disso, o fluxo de veículos é prejudicado por situações adversas recorrentes nas vias, como o aumento súbito do tráfego durante os horários de pico, gargalos nas infraestruturas de transporte, e acidentes de trânsito. Com o avanço das tecnologias de comunicação, processamento e sensoriamento, os Sistemas de Transporte Inteligentes (ITS) surgem como uma alternativa para mitigar esses problemas. A interoperabilidade dos ITS com novas tecnologias tais como as redes veiculares (VANETs) e computação em névoa, os tornam mais promissores e eficazes. As VANETs preveem que veículos possuam poder computacional e capacidade de comunicação sem fio com outros veículos e com as infraestruturas fixa de comunicação, assim, uma nova gama de serviços de segurança e entretenimento aos motoristas e passageiros podem ser desenvolvidas. Entretanto, estes tipos de serviços, em especial o de gerenciamento de trânsito, demandam uma análise contínua das condições de fluxo de veículos nas vias e um vasto recurso de rede e processamento, tornando o desenvolvimento de soluções para ITS mais complexo e de difícil escalabilidade. A computação em névoa é uma infraestrutura de computação descentralizada na qual dados, processamento, armazenamento e aplicações são distribuídos na borda da rede, assim, aumentando a escalabilidade do sistema. Na literatura, os sistemas de gerenciamento de tráfego não tratam de maneira adequada o problema de escalabilidade, implicando em problemas relacionados ao balanceamento de carga e tempo de resposta. Esta tese de doutorado propõe um sistema de gerenciamento de tráfego baseado no paradigma de computação em névoa, para detectar, classificar e controlar o congestionamento de tráfego. O sistema proposto apresenta um framework distribuído e escalável que reduz os problemas supracitados em relação ao estado da arte. Para tanto, utilizando da natureza distribuída da computação em névoa, a solução implementa um algoritmo de roteamento probabilístico que faz o balanceamento do tráfego e evita o problema de deslocamento de congestionamentos para outras regiões. Utilizando às características da computação em névoa, foi desenvolvida uma metodologia distribuída baseada em regiões que faz a coleta de dados e classificação das vias em relação às condições do trânsito compartilhadas pelos veículos. Finalmente, foi desenvolvido um conjunto de algoritmos/protocolos de comunicação que comparado com outras soluções da literatura, reduz a perda de pacotes e o número de mensagens transmitidas. O serviço proposto foi comparado extensivamente com outras soluções da literatura em relação às métricas de trânsito, onde o sistema proposto foi capaz de reduzir em até 70% o tempo parado e em até 49% o planning time index. Considerando as métricas de comunicação, o serviço proposto é capaz de reduzir em até 12% a colisão de pacotes alcançando uma cobertura de 98% do cenário. Os resultados mostram que o framework baseado em computação em névoa desenvolvido, melhora o fluxo de veículos de forma eficiente e escalávelAbstract: Traffic in large urban centers contributes to problems that range from decreasing the population¿s quality of life and security to increasing financial costs for people, cities, and companies. One of the reasons for increased vehicle traffic is the population growth in urban centers. Moreover, vehicle flow is hampered by recurring adverse situations on roads, such as the sudden increase in vehicle traffic during peak hours, bottlenecks in transportation infrastructure, and traffic accidents. Considering the advance of communication, processing, and sensing technologies, Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) have emerged as an alternative to mitigate these problems. The interoperability of ITS with new technologies, such as vehicular networks (VANETs) and Fog computing, make them more promising and effective. VANETs ensure that vehicles have the computing power and wireless communication capabilities with other vehicles and with fixed communication infrastructures; therefore, a new range of security and entertainment services for drivers and passengers can be developed. However, these types of services, especially traffic management, demand a continuous analysis of vehicle flow conditions on roads and a huge network and processing resource, making the development of ITS solutions more complex and difficult to scale. Fog computing is a decentralized computing infrastructure in which data, processing, storage, and applications are distributed at the network edge, thereby increasing the system¿s scalability. In the literature, traffic management systems do not adequately address the scalability problem, resulting in load balancing and response time problems. This doctoral thesis proposes a traffic management system based on the Fog computing paradigm to detect, classify, and control traffic congestion. The proposed system presents a distributed and scalable framework that reduces the aforementioned problems in relation to state of the art. Therefore, using Fog computing¿s distributed nature, the solution implements a probabilistic routing algorithm that balances traffic and avoids the problem of congestion displacement to other regions. Using the characteristics of Fog computing, a distributed methodology was developed based on regions that collect data and classify the roads concerning the traffic conditions shared by the vehicles. Finally, a set of communication algorithms/protocols was developed which, compared with other literature solutions, reduces packet loss and the number of messages transmitted. The proposed service was compared extensively with other solutions in the literature regarding traffic metrics, where the proposed system was able to reduce downtime by up to 70% and up to 49% of the planning time index. Considering communication metrics, the proposed service can reduce packet collision by up to 12% reaching 98% coverage of the scenario.     RFID Technology in Intelligent Tracking Systems in Construction Waste Logistics Using Optimisation Techniques

    Construction waste disposal is an urgent issue for protecting our environment. This paper proposes a waste management system and illustrates the work process using plasterboard waste as an example, which creates a hazardous gas when land filled with household waste, and for which the recycling rate is less than 10% in the UK. The proposed system integrates RFID technology, Rule-Based Reasoning, Ant Colony optimization and knowledge technology for auditing and tracking plasterboard waste, guiding the operation staff, arranging vehicles, schedule planning, and also provides evidence to verify its disposal. It h relies on RFID equipment for collecting logistical data and uses digital imaging equipment to give further evidence; the reasoning core in the third layer is responsible for generating schedules and route plans and guidance, and the last layer delivers the result to inform users. The paper firstly introduces the current plasterboard disposal situation and addresses the logistical problem that is now the main barrier to a higher recycling rate, followed by discussion of the proposed system in terms of both system level structure and process structure. And finally, an example scenario will be given to illustrate the system’s utilization
