    Application of Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks to Achieve Intelligent Microgrids: A Promising Approach towards a Global Smart Grid Deployment

    Smart Grids (SGs) constitute the evolution of the traditional electrical grid towards a new paradigm, which should increase the reliability, the security and, at the same time, reduce the costs of energy generation, distribution and consumption. Electrical microgrids (MGs) can be considered the first stage of this evolution of the grid, because of the intelligent management techniques that must be applied to assure their correct operation. To accomplish this task, sensors and actuators will be necessary, along with wireless communication technologies to transmit the measured data and the command messages. Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSANs) are therefore a promising solution to achieve an intelligent management of MGs and, by extension, the SG. In this frame, this paper surveys several aspects concerning the application of WSANs to manage MGs and the electrical grid, as well as the communication protocols that could be applied. The main concerns regarding the SG deployment are also presented, including future scenarios where the interoperability of different generation technologies must be assured

    Robust de-centralized control and estimation for inter-connected systems

    The thesis is concerned with the theoretical development of the control of inter-connected systems to achieve the whole overall stability and specific performance. A special included feature is the Fault-Tolerant Control (FTC) problem for the inter-connected system in terms of local subsystem actuator fault estimation. Hence, the thesis describes the main FTC challenges of distributed control of uncertain non-linear inter-connected systems. The basic principle adopted throughout the work is that the controller has two components, one involving the nominal control with unmatched components including uncertainties and disturbances. The second controller dealing with matched components including uncertainties and actuator faults. The main contributions of the thesis are summarised as follows: - The non-linear inter-connected systems are controlled by two controllers. The linear part via a linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique and the discontinuous part by using Integral Sliding Mode Control (ISMC) based on state feedback control. - The development of a new observer-based state estimate control strategy for non-linear inter-connected systems. The technique is applied either to every individual subsystem or to the whole as one shot system. - A new proposal of Adaptive Output Integral Sliding Mode Control (AOISMC) based only on output information plus static output feedback control is designed via an LMI formulation to control non-linear inter-connected systems. The new method is verified by application to a mathematical example representing an electrical power generator. - The development of a new method to design a dynamic control based on an LMI framework with Output Integral Sliding Mode Control (OISMC) to improve the stability and performance. - Using the above framework, making use of LMI tools and ISMC, a method of on-line actuator fault estimation has been proposed using the Proportional Multiple Integral Observer (PMIO) for fault estimation applicable to non-linear inter-connected systems

    Robust adaptive model predictive control for intelligent drinking water distribution systems

    Large-scale complex systems have large numbers of variables, network structure of interconnected subsystems, nonlinearity, spatial distribution with several time scales in its dynamics, uncertainties and constrained. Decomposition of large-scale complex systems into smaller more manageable subsystems allowed for implementing distributed control and coordinations mechanisms. This thesis proposed the use of distributed softly switched robustly feasible model predictive controllers (DSSRFMPC) for the control of large-scale complex systems. Each DSSRFMPC is made up of reconfigurable robustly feasible model predictive controllers (RRFMPC) to adapt to different operational states or fault scenarios of the plant. RRFMPC reconfiguration to adapt to different operational states of the plant is achieved using the soft switching method between the RRFMPC controllers. The RRFMPC is designed by utilizing the off-line safety zones and the robustly feasible invariant sets in the state space which are established off-line using Karush Kuhn Tucker conditions. This is used to achieve robust feasibility and recursive feasibility for the RRFMPC under different operational states of the plant. The feasible adaptive cooperation among DSSRFMPC agents under different operational states are proposed. The proposed methodology is verified by applying it to a simulated benchmark drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) water quality control

    This paper presents a fuzzy logic based method to track user satisfaction without the need for devices to monitor users physiological conditions. User satisfaction is the key to any product’s acceptance; computer applications and video games provide a unique opportunity to provide a tailored environment for each user to better suit their needs. We have implemented a non-adaptive fuzzy logic model of emotion, based on the emotional component of the Fuzzy Logic Adaptive Model of Emotion (FLAME) proposed by El-Nasr, to estimate player emotion in UnrealTournament 2004. In this paper we describe the implementation of this system and present the results of one of several play tests. Our research contradicts the current literature that suggests physiological measurements are needed. We show that it is possible to use a software only method to estimate user emotion

    Online failure prediction in air traffic control systems

    This thesis introduces a novel approach to online failure prediction for mission critical distributed systems that has the distinctive features to be black-box, non-intrusive and online. The approach combines Complex Event Processing (CEP) and Hidden Markov Models (HMM) so as to analyze symptoms of failures that might occur in the form of anomalous conditions of performance metrics identified for such purpose. The thesis presents an architecture named CASPER, based on CEP and HMM, that relies on sniffed information from the communication network of a mission critical system, only, for predicting anomalies that can lead to software failures. An instance of Casper has been implemented, trained and tuned to monitor a real Air Traffic Control (ATC) system developed by Selex ES, a Finmeccanica Company. An extensive experimental evaluation of CASPER is presented. The obtained results show (i) a very low percentage of false positives over both normal and under stress conditions, and (ii) a sufficiently high failure prediction time that allows the system to apply appropriate recovery procedures

    Pore network modelling of wettability effects on waterflood oil recovery from Agbada sandstone formation in the Niger Delta, Nigeria

It is recognized as being important for multiphase properties. Understanding the variation of these properties in the field, due to wettability trends and different pore structures, is very critical for designing efficient and reliable processes and projects for enhanced hydrocarbon recovery. After primary drainage the reservoir wettability changes: if it was oil-wet initially, it gradually changes to water-wet during waterflooding. This change in reservoir wettability towards water-wet will reduce the residual oil saturation and improve the oil displacement efficiency. However, knowledge of the constitutive relationship between the pore scale descriptors of transport in the porous system is required to adequately describe wettability trend and its impact on oil recovery, particularly during waterflooding. In this work, the petrophysical properties that define fluid flow in the Agbada, Nigeria sandstone reservoir were determined using conventional experimental and x-ray CT scanning methods. Experimentally measured average porosity is 0.28, average permeability is 1699 mD, while the initial and irreducible water saturation is 0.22. Permeability in the x, y and z directions, ranging from 50 to 200 mD, were calculated from the pore network extracted from the Agbada sandstone rock. Results obtained from the Amott-Harvey wettability measurement method indicate that the reservoir is strongly water-wet, with Amott-Harvey index of about 0.9. The cross-over between the water and oil relative permeabilities occurred at saturations of the samples above 0.5, giving an indication of strong water-wetness. The work summarizes the mechanism of wettability alteration and characterizes the performance of the reservoir during waterflooding from injecting water, and relates the residual oil saturation, relative permeability and volumes of water injected to wettability and its effects on oil recovery. Waterflood oil recovery is computed using the Buckley-Leverett method based on the reservoir rock and fluid properties. Computed waterflood oil recovery using this method was about 60% of the oil initially in place. Plots of spontaneous imbibition rate show that the injection rate for optimal oil recovery is 40 bbls of injected water per day. At this rate, both the mobility and shock front mobility ratios are less than 1, leading to a stable flood front and absence of viscous fingering. Waterflooding is by far the most widely applied method of improved oil recovery over the years with good results in conventional and unconventional (tight oil) reservoirs It is relatively simple and cost effective: abundance and availability of water. Waterflood oil recovery factor is affected by internal and external factors. The placement of the injection and production wells, for example, impacts on the effectiveness of the waterflooding process. I considered the placement of the wells in a five-spot pattern as elements of an unbounded double periodic array of wells and assumed the reservoir to be homogeneous, infinite and isotropic, with constant porosity and permeability. Both fluids are treated as having slight but constant compressibility and their flow governed by Darcy’s law. The average pressure in the reservoir satisfies quasi-static flow or diffusion equation. I then assumed piston-like displacement of oil by injected water that takes account of viscosity diffence between both fluids and proposed a model based on the theory of elliptic functions, in particular Weierstrass p-functions functions. Oil-water contact movement, dimensionless time for water breakthrough at the production well, areal sweep and average reservoir pressures were modeled. The model was tested using Wolfram Mathematica 10 software and the results are promising. The thesis has therefore established that the Agbada sandstone reservoir is strongly water-wet and that waterflooding is a viable option for enhanced oil recovery from the reservoir.MT201
