Internet addiction in adolescents: prevalence and risk factors
As new media are becoming daily fare, Internet addiction appears as a potential problem in adolescents. From the reported negative consequences, it appears that Internet addiction can have a variety of detrimental outcomes for young people that may require professional intervention. Researchers have now identified a number of activities and personality traits associated with Internet addiction. This study aimed to synthesise previous findings by (i) assessing the prevalence of potential Internet addiction in a large sample of adolescents, and (ii) investigating the interactions between personality traits and the usage of particular Internet applications as risk factors for Internet addiction. A total of 3,105 adolescents in the Netherlands filled out a self-report questionnaire including the Compulsive Internet Use Scale and the Quick Big Five Scale. Results indicate that 3.7% of the sample were classified as potentially being addicted to the Internet. The use of online gaming and social applications (online social networking sites and Twitter) increased the 2 risk for Internet addiction, whereas extraversion and conscientiousness appeared as protective factors in high frequency online gamers. The findings support the inclusion of 'Internet addiction' in the DSM-V. Vulnerability and resilience appear as significant aspects that require consideration in further studies

Internet addiction in students: prevalence and risk factors
The last decade has witnessed a large increase in research on the newly emerging mental health problem of Internet addiction. Rather than looking at Internet addiction per se, this study focused on particular activities on the Internet that might be potentially addictive and linked them to personality traits that might predispose individuals to Internet addiction. The aims of this study were (i) to assess the prevalence of clinically significant levels of Internet addiction, and to (ii) discern the interplay between personality traits and specific Internet uses in increasing the risk for Internet addiction. This cross-sectional online survey used data from 2,257 students of an English university. Results indicated that 3.2% of the students were classified as being addicted to the Internet. The included personality traits and uses of online activities explained 21.5% of the variance in Internet addiction. A combination of online shopping and neuroticism decreased the risk for Internet addiction, whereas a combination of online gaming and openness to experience increased it. In addition to this, frequent usage of online shopping and social online activities, high neuroticism and low agreeableness significantly increased the chances of being addicted to the Internet. Findings and their implications are discussed
Experiencing Poverty in an Online Simulation: Effects on Playersâ Beliefs, Attitudes and Behaviors about Poverty
Digital simulations are increasingly used to educate about the causes and effects of poverty, and inspire action to alleviate it. Drawing on research about attributions of poverty, subjective well-being, and relative income, this experimental study assesses the effects of an online poverty simulation (entitled Spent) on participantsâ beliefs, attitudes, and actions. Results show that, compared with a control group, Spent players donated marginally more money to a charity serving the poor and expressed higher support for policies benefitting the poor, but were less likely to take immediate political action by signing an online petition to support a higher minimum wage. Spent players also expressed greater subjective well-being than the control group, but this was not associated with increased policy support or donations. Spent players who experienced greater presence (perceived realism of the simulation) had higher levels of empathy, which contributed to attributing poverty to structural causes and support for anti-poverty policies. We draw conclusions for theory about the psychological experience of playing online poverty simulations, and for how they could be designed to stimulate charity and support for anti-poverty policies
Self-efficacy, religiosity, and crime: profiles of African American youth in urban housing communities
Youth reporting independently elevated levels of religiosity and self-efficacy tend to abstain from externalizing behavior. However, little is known about the ways in which religiosity and self-efficacy interrelate to impact youth externalizing. Drawing from a sample of African American youth from public housing communities (N = 236), we use latent profile analysis to identify subtypes of youth based on self-reported religiosity and self-efficacy and, in turn, examine links with crime. Internet addiction: a systematic review of epidemiological research for the last decade
In the last decade, Internet usage has grown tremendously on a global scale. The increasing popularity and frequency of Internet use has led to an increasing number of reports highlighting the potential negative consequences of overuse. Over the last decade, research into Internet addiction has proliferated. This paper reviews the existing 68 epidemiological studies of Internet addiction that (i) contain quantitative empirical data, (ii) have been published after 2000, (iii) include an analysis relating to Internet addiction, (iv) include a minimum of 1000 participants, and (v) provide a full-text article published in English using the database Web of Science. Assessment tools and conceptualisations, prevalence, and associated factors in adolescents and adults are scrutinised. The results reveal the following. First, no gold standard of Internet addiction classification exists as 21 different assessment instruments have been identified. They adopt official criteria for substance use disorders or pathological gambling, no or few criteria relevant for an addiction diagnosis, time spent online, or resulting problems. Second, reported prevalence rates differ as a consequence of different assessment tools and cut-offs, ranging from 0.8% in Italy to 26.7% in Hong Kong. Third, Internet addiction is associated with a number of sociodemographic, Internet use, and psychosocial factors, as well as comorbid symptoms and disorder in adolescents and adults. The results indicate that a number of core symptoms (i.e., compulsive use, negative outcomes and salience) appear relevant for diagnosis, which assimilates Internet addiction and other addictive disorders and also differentiates them, implying a conceptualisation as syndrome with similar etiology and components, but different expressions of addictions. Limitations include the exclusion of studies with smaller sample sizes and studies focusing on specific online behaviours. Conclusively, there is a need for nosological precision so that ultimately those in need can be helped by translating the scientific evidence established in the context of Internet addiction into actual clinical practice
Understanding Perceptions of Problematic Facebook Use: When People Experience Negative Life Impact and a Lack of Control
While many people use social network sites to connect with friends and
family, some feel that their use is problematic, seriously affecting their
sleep, work, or life. Pairing a survey of 20,000 Facebook users measuring
perceptions of problematic use with behavioral and demographic data, we
examined Facebook activities associated with problematic use as well as the
kinds of people most likely to experience it. People who feel their use is
problematic are more likely to be younger, male, and going through a major life
event such as a breakup. They spend more time on the platform, particularly at
night, and spend proportionally more time looking at profiles and less time
browsing their News Feeds. They also message their friends more frequently.
While they are more likely to respond to notifications, they are also more
likely to deactivate their accounts, perhaps in an effort to better manage
their time. Further, they are more likely to have seen content about social
media or phone addiction. Notably, people reporting problematic use rate the
site as more valuable to them, highlighting the complex relationship between
technology use and well-being. A better understanding of problematic Facebook
use can inform the design of context-appropriate and supportive tools to help

Online gaming addiction in children and adolescents: a review of empirical research
Background and aims:
Research suggests that excessive online gaming may lead to symptoms commonly experienced by substance addicts. Since games are particularly appealing to children and adolescents, these individuals may be more at risk than other groups of developing gaming addiction.
Methods:
Given these potential concerns, a literature review was undertaken in order (i) to present the classification basis of online gaming addiction using official mental disorder frameworks, (ii) to identify empirical studies that assess online gaming addiction in children and adolescents, and (iii) to present and evaluate the findings against the background of related and established mental disorder criteria.
Results:
Empirical evidence comprising 30 studies indicates that for some adolescents, gaming ad - diction exists and that as the addiction develops, online gaming addicts spend increasing amounts of time preparing for, organizing, and actually gaming.
Conclusions:
Evidence suggests that problematic online gaming can be conceptualized as a behavioral addiction rather than a disorder of impulse control
Burnout in the Workplace: A Review of the Data and Policy Responses in the EU
This report looks at the extent of burnout experienced by workers in the EU, based on national research. As a starting point, the report sets out to consider whether burnout is viewed as a medical or occupational disease. It then examines the work determinants associated with burnout and looks at the effects of burnout, including psychosocial and physical work factors, work intensity and work organisation. It also reviews national strategies and policies regarding this issue, the involvement of the social partners in the current debate, as well as preventive actions currently in place
Facebook usage and academic achievement of high school students: a quantitative analysis
Online social networking has become an integral part of the lives of America\u27s teenagers with 73% of teens reporting that they use a social networking site such as Facebook daily (Lenhart, Purcell, Smith, & Zickuhr, 2010). Some recent studies have shown a negative relationship between Facebook use and academic achievement (Karpinski & Duberstein, 2009), while other studies have shown no relationship between Facebook use and academic achievement (Pasek, More, & Hargittaai, 2009). Thus, parents, teachers, and administrators remain uncertain of the effects, if any, of students using Facebook. This study examined Facebook usage and academic achievement of high school students at Dollarway High School. 72 students completed two surveys-the Facebook Intensity Scale (FBI) and ENGAGE for grades 10 to 12. The FBI measures the amount of time a student spends on Facebook, the extent of a student\u27s participation on Facebook, a student\u27s emotional connection to Facebook, and a student\u27s integration of Facebook into his/her daily life. ENGAGE measures 10 psychosocial behaviors that affect academic achievement of students including academic discipline, academic self-confidence, commitment to college, communication skills, general determination, goal striving, social activity, social connection, steadiness, and study skills. Students\u27 GPA information was also collected. Results of the study showed a negative relationship between intensity of Facebook use and GPA, a negative relationship between intensity of Facebook use and goal striving, and a negative relationship between intensity of Facebook use and steadiness. These findings indicate that a negative relationship does exist among Facebook use and academic achievement for some populations. More research is needed to determine why these negative relationships exist in some populations and not in others
