    Apprentissage profond de formes manuscrites pour la reconnaissance et le repérage efficace de l'écriture dans les documents numérisés

    Malgré les efforts importants de la communauté d’analyse de documents, définir une representation robuste pour les formes manuscrites demeure un défi de taille. Une telle representation ne peut pas être définie explicitement par un ensemble de règles, et doit plutôt être obtenue avec une extraction intelligente de caractéristiques de haut niveau à partir d’images de documents. Dans cette thèse, les modèles d’apprentissage profond sont investigués pour la representation automatique de formes manuscrites. Les représentations proposées par ces modèles sont utilisées pour définir un système de reconnaissance et de repérage de mots individuels dans les documents. Le choix de traiter les mots individuellement est motivé par le fait que n’importe quel texte peut être segmenté en un ensemble de mots séparés. Dans une première contribution, une représentation non supervisée profonde est proposée pour la tâche de repérage de mots manuscrits. Cette représentation se base sur l’algorithme de regroupement spherical k-means, qui est employé pour construire une hiérarchie de fonctions paramétriques encodant les images de documents. Les avantages de cette représentation sont multiples. Tout d’abord, elle est définie de manière non supervisée, ce qui évite la nécessité d’avoir des données annotées pour l’entraînement. Ensuite, elle se calcule rapidement et est de taille compacte, permettant ainsi de repérer des mots efficacement. Dans une deuxième contribution, un modèle de bout en bout est développé pour la reconnaissance de mots manuscrits. Ce modèle est composé d’un réseau de neurones convolutifs qui prend en entrée l’image d’un mot et produit en sortie une représentation du texte reconnu. Ce texte est représenté sous la forme d’un ensemble de sous-sequences bidirectionnelles de caractères formant une hiérarchie. Cette représentation se distingue des approches existantes dans la littérature et offre plusieurs avantages par rapport à celles-ci. Notamment, elle est binaire et a une taille fixe, ce qui la rend robuste à la taille du texte. Par ailleurs, elle capture la distribution des sous-séquences de caractères dans le corpus d’entraînement, et permet donc au modèle entraîné de transférer cette connaissance à de nouveaux mots contenant les memes sous-séquences. Dans une troisième et dernière contribution, un modèle de bout en bout est proposé pour résoudre simultanément les tâches de repérage et de reconnaissance. Ce modèle intègre conjointement les textes et les images de mots dans un seul espace vectoriel. Une image est projetée dans cet espace via un réseau de neurones convolutifs entraîné à détecter les différentes forms de caractères. De même, un mot est projeté dans cet espace via un réseau de neurones récurrents. Le modèle proposé est entraîné de manière à ce que l’image d’un mot et son texte soient projetés au même point. Dans l’espace vectoriel appris, les tâches de repérage et de reconnaissance peuvent être traitées efficacement comme un problème de recherche des plus proches voisins

Several studies have been made regarding text mining and sentiment analysis, aiming to spot fake information and avoid misinformation spreading. The trustworthiness and veracity of the information that is accessible to people is getting increasingly important, and in some cases critical, and can be seen has a huge challenge for the current digital era. This problem might be addressed with the help of science and technology. One question that we can do to ourselves is: How do we guarantee that there is a correct use of information, and that people can trust in the veracity of it? Using mathematics and statistics, combined with machine learning classification and predictive algorithms, using the current computation power of information systems, can help minimize the problem, or at least spot the potential fake information. One suggests developing a research work that aims to reach a model for the prediction of a given text content is trustworthy.     A Framework For Abstracting, Designing And Building Tangible Gesture Interactive Systems

    This thesis discusses tangible gesture interaction, a novel paradigm for interacting with computer that blends concepts from the more popular fields of tangible interaction and gesture interaction. Taking advantage of the human innate abilities to manipulate physical objects and to communicate through gestures, tangible gesture interaction is particularly interesting for interacting in smart environments, bringing the interaction with computer beyond the screen, back to the real world. Since tangible gesture interaction is a relatively new field of research, this thesis presents a conceptual framework that aims at supporting future work in this field. The Tangible Gesture Interaction Framework provides support on three levels. First, it helps reflecting from a theoretical point of view on the different types of tangible gestures that can be designed, physically, through a taxonomy based on three components (move, hold and touch) and additional attributes, and semantically, through a taxonomy of the semantic constructs that can be used to associate meaning to tangible gestures. Second, it helps conceiving new tangible gesture interactive systems and designing new interactions based on gestures with objects, through dedicated guidelines for tangible gesture definition and common practices for different application domains. Third, it helps building new tangible gesture interactive systems supporting the choice between four different technological approaches (embedded and embodied, wearable, environmental or hybrid) and providing general guidance for the different approaches. As an application of this framework, this thesis presents also seven tangible gesture interactive systems for three different application domains, i.e., interacting with the In-Vehicle Infotainment System (IVIS) of the car, the emotional and interpersonal communication, and the interaction in a smart home. For the first application domain, four different systems that use gestures on the steering wheel as interaction means with the IVIS have been designed, developed and evaluated. For the second application domain, an anthropomorphic lamp able to recognize gestures that humans typically perform for interpersonal communication has been conceived and developed. A second system, based on smart t-shirts, recognizes when two people hug and reward the gesture with an exchange of digital information. Finally, a smart watch for recognizing gestures performed with objects held in the hand in the context of the smart home has been investigated. The analysis of existing systems found in literature and of the system developed during this thesis shows that the framework has a good descriptive and evaluative power. The applications developed during this thesis show that the proposed framework has also a good generative power.Questa tesi discute l’interazione gestuale tangibile, un nuovo paradigma per interagire con il computer che unisce i principi dei più comuni campi di studio dell’interazione tangibile e dell’interazione gestuale. Sfruttando le abilità innate dell’uomo di manipolare oggetti fisici e di comunicare con i gesti, l’interazione gestuale tangibile si rivela particolarmente interessante per interagire negli ambienti intelligenti, riportando l’attenzione sul nostro mondo reale, al di là dello schermo dei computer o degli smartphone. Poiché l’interazione gestuale tangibile è un campo di studio relativamente recente, questa tesi presenta un framework (quadro teorico) che ha lo scopo di assistere lavori futuri in questo campo. Il Framework per l’Interazione Gestuale Tangibile fornisce supporto su tre livelli. Per prima cosa, aiuta a riflettere da un punto di vista teorico sui diversi tipi di gesti tangibili che possono essere eseguiti fisicamente, grazie a una tassonomia basata su tre componenti (muovere, tenere, toccare) e attributi addizionali, e che possono essere concepiti semanticamente, grazie a una tassonomia di tutti i costrutti semantici che permettono di associare dei significati ai gesti tangibili. In secondo luogo, il framework proposto aiuta a concepire nuovi sistemi interattivi basati su gesti tangibili e a ideare nuove interazioni basate su gesti con gli oggetti, attraverso linee guida per la definizione di gesti tangibili e una selezione delle migliore pratiche per i differenti campi di applicazione. Infine, il framework aiuta a implementare nuovi sistemi interattivi basati su gesti tangibili, permettendo di scegliere tra quattro differenti approcci tecnologici (incarnato e integrato negli oggetti, indossabile, distribuito nell’ambiente, o ibrido) e fornendo una guida generale per la scelta tra questi differenti approcci. Come applicazione di questo framework, questa tesi presenta anche sette sistemi interattivi basati su gesti tangibili, realizzati per tre differenti campi di applicazione: l’interazione con i sistemi di infotainment degli autoveicoli, la comunicazione interpersonale delle emozioni, e l’interazione nella casa intelligente. Per il primo campo di applicazione, sono stati progettati, sviluppati e testati quattro differenti sistemi che usano gesti tangibili effettuati sul volante come modalità di interazione con il sistema di infotainment. Per il secondo campo di applicazione, è stata concepita e sviluppata una lampada antropomorfica in grado di riconoscere i gesti tipici dell’interazione interpersonale. Per lo stesso campo di applicazione, un secondo sistema, basato su una maglietta intelligente, riconosce quando due persone si abbracciano e ricompensa questo gesto con uno scambio di informazioni digitali. Infine, per l’interazione nella casa intelligente, è stata investigata la realizzazione di uno smart watch per il riconoscimento di gesti eseguiti con oggetti tenuti nella mano. L’analisi dei sistemi interattivi esistenti basati su gesti tangibili permette di dimostrare che il framework ha un buon potere descrittivo e valutativo.     3D Robotic Sensing of People: Human Perception, Representation and Activity Recognition

    The robots are coming. Their presence will eventually bridge the digital-physical divide and dramatically impact human life by taking over tasks where our current society has shortcomings (e.g., search and rescue, elderly care, and child education). Human-centered robotics (HCR) is a vision to address how robots can coexist with humans and help people live safer, simpler and more independent lives. As humans, we have a remarkable ability to perceive the world around us, perceive people, and interpret their behaviors. Endowing robots with these critical capabilities in highly dynamic human social environments is a significant but very challenging problem in practical human-centered robotics applications. This research focuses on robotic sensing of people, that is, how robots can perceive and represent humans and understand their behaviors, primarily through 3D robotic vision. In this dissertation, I begin with a broad perspective on human-centered robotics by discussing its real-world applications and significant challenges. Then, I will introduce a real-time perception system, based on the concept of Depth of Interest, to detect and track multiple individuals using a color-depth camera that is installed on moving robotic platforms. In addition, I will discuss human representation approaches, based on local spatio-temporal features, including new “CoDe4D” features that incorporate both color and depth information, a new “SOD” descriptor to efficiently quantize 3D visual features, and the novel AdHuC features, which are capable of representing the activities of multiple individuals. Several new algorithms to recognize human activities are also discussed, including the RG-PLSA model, which allows us to discover activity patterns without supervision, the MC-HCRF model, which can explicitly investigate certainty in latent temporal patterns, and the FuzzySR model, which is used to segment continuous data into events and probabilistically recognize human activities. Cognition models based on recognition results are also implemented for decision making that allow robotic systems to react to human activities. Finally, I will conclude with a discussion of future directions that will accelerate the upcoming technological revolution of human-centered robotics

    A framework for clustering and adaptive topic tracking on evolving text and social media data streams.

    Recent advances and widespread usage of online web services and social media platforms, coupled with ubiquitous low cost devices, mobile technologies, and increasing capacity of lower cost storage, has led to a proliferation of Big data, ranging from, news, e-commerce clickstreams, and online business transactions to continuous event logs and social media expressions. These large amounts of online data, often referred to as data streams, because they get generated at extremely high throughputs or velocity, can make conventional and classical data analytics methodologies obsolete. For these reasons, the issues of management and analysis of data streams have been researched extensively in recent years. The special case of social media Big Data brings additional challenges, particularly because of the unstructured nature of the data, specifically free text. One classical approach to mine text data has been Topic Modeling. Topic Models are statistical models that can be used for discovering the abstract ``topics\u27\u27 that may occur in a corpus of documents. Topic models have emerged as a powerful technique in machine learning and data science, providing a great balance between simplicity and complexity. They also provide sophisticated insight without the need for real natural language understanding. However they have not been designed to cope with the type of text data that is abundant on social media platforms, but rather for traditional medium size corpora consisting of longer documents, adhering to a specific language and typically spanning a stable set of topics. Unlike traditional document corpora, social media messages tend to be very short, sparse, noisy, and do not adhere to a standard vocabulary, linguistic patterns, or stable topic distributions. They are also generated at high velocity that impose high demands on topic modeling; and their evolving or dynamic nature, makes any set of results from topic modeling quickly become stale in the face of changes in the textual content and topics discussed within social media streams. In this dissertation, we propose an integrated topic modeling framework built on top of an existing stream-clustering framework called Stream-Dashboard, which can extract, isolate, and track topics over any given time period. In this new framework, Stream Dashboard first clusters the data stream points into homogeneous groups. Then data from each group is ushered to the topic modeling framework which extracts finer topics from the group. The proposed framework tracks the evolution of the clusters over time to detect milestones corresponding to changes in topic evolution, and to trigger an adaptation of the learned groups and topics at each milestone. The proposed approach to topic modeling is different from a generic Topic Modeling approach because it works in a compartmentalized fashion, where the input document stream is split into distinct compartments, and Topic Modeling is applied on each compartment separately. Furthermore, we propose extensions to existing topic modeling and stream clustering methods, including: an adaptive query reformulation approach to help focus on the topic discovery with time; a topic modeling extension with adaptive hyper-parameter and with infinite vocabulary; an adaptive stream clustering algorithm incorporating the automated estimation of dynamic, cluster-specific temporal scales for adaptive forgetting to help facilitate clustering in a fast evolving data stream. Our experimental results show that the proposed adaptive forgetting clustering algorithm can mine better quality clusters; that our proposed compartmentalized framework is able to mine topics of better quality compared to competitive baselines; and that the proposed framework can automatically adapt to focus on changing topics using the proposed query reformulation strategy

    Subword-based approaches for spoken document retrieval

The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.This thesis explores approaches to the problem of spoken document retrieval (SDR), which is the task of automatically indexing and then retrieving relevant items from a large collection of recorded speech messages in response to a user specified natural language text query. We investigate the use of subword unit representations for SDR as an alternative to words generated by either keyword spotting or continuous speech recognition. Our investigation is motivated by the observation that word-based retrieval approaches face the problem of either having to know the keywords to search for [\em a priori], or requiring a very large recognition vocabulary in order to cover the contents of growing and diverse message collections. The use of subword units in the recognizer constrains the size of the vocabulary needed to cover the language; and the use of subword units as indexing terms allows for the detection of new user-specified query terms during retrieval. Four research issues are addressed. First, what are suitable subword units and how well can they perform? Second, how can these units be reliably extracted from the speech signal? Third, what is the behavior of the subword units when there are speech recognition errors and how well do they perform? And fourth, how can the indexing and retrieval methods be modified to take into account the fact that the speech recognition output will be errorful?(cont.) We first explore a range of subword units ofvarying complexity derived from error-free phonetic transcriptions and measure their ability to effectively index and retrieve speech messages. We find that many subword units capture enough information to perform effective retrieval and that it is possible to achieve performance comparable to that of text-based word units. Next, we develop a phonetic speech recognizer and process the spoken document collection to generate phonetic transcriptions. We then measure the ability of subword units derived from these transcriptions to perform spoken document retrieval and examine the effects of recognition errors on retrieval performance. Retrieval performance degrades for all subword units (to 60% of the clean reference), but remains reasonable for some subword units even without the use of any error compensation techniques. We then investigate a number of robust methods that take into account the characteristics of the recognition errors and try to compensate for them in an effort to improve spoken document retrieval performance when there are speech recognition errors. We study the methods individually and explore the effects of combining them. Using these robust methods improves retrieval performance by 23%. We also propose a novel approach to SDR where the speech recognition and information retrieval components are more tightly integrated.(cont.) This is accomplished by developing new recognizer and retrieval models where the interface between the two components is better matched and the goals of the two components are consistent with each other and with the overall goal of the combined system.
