    MGSim - Simulation tools for multi-core processor architectures

    MGSim is an open source discrete event simulator for on-chip hardware components, developed at the University of Amsterdam. It is intended to be a research and teaching vehicle to study the fine-grained hardware/software interactions on many-core and hardware multithreaded processors. It includes support for core models with different instruction sets, a configurable multi-core interconnect, multiple configurable cache and memory models, a dedicated I/O subsystem, and comprehensive monitoring and interaction facilities. The default model configuration shipped with MGSim implements Microgrids, a many-core architecture with hardware concurrency management. MGSim is furthermore written mostly in C++ and uses object classes to represent chip components.     Demonstrating Advantages of Neuromorphic Computation: A Pilot Study

    Neuromorphic devices represent an attempt to mimic aspects of the brain's architecture and dynamics with the aim of replicating its hallmark functional capabilities in terms of computational power, robust learning and energy efficiency. We employ a single-chip prototype of the BrainScaleS 2 neuromorphic system to implement a proof-of-concept demonstration of reward-modulated spike-timing-dependent plasticity in a spiking network that learns to play the Pong video game by smooth pursuit. This system combines an electronic mixed-signal substrate for emulating neuron and synapse dynamics with an embedded digital processor for on-chip learning, which in this work also serves to simulate the virtual environment and learning agent. The analog emulation of neuronal membrane dynamics enables a 1000-fold acceleration with respect to biological real-time, with the entire chip operating on a power budget of 57mW. Compared to an equivalent simulation using state-of-the-art software, the on-chip emulation is at least one order of magnitude faster and three orders of magnitude more energy-efficient. We demonstrate how on-chip learning can mitigate the effects of fixed-pattern noise, which is unavoidable in analog substrates, while making use of temporal variability for action exploration. Learning compensates imperfections of the physical substrate, as manifested in neuronal parameter variability, by adapting synaptic weights to match respective excitability of individual neurons.Comment: Added measurements with noise in NEST simulation, add notice about journal publication.     Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) have been used in accelerator systems for more than fifteen years and have largely contributed to the evolution towards digital technology of many accelerator systems, such as machine protection, diagnostics and control of beams, power supply and motors. This paper aims at familiarising the reader with DSP fundamentals, namely DSP characteristics and processing development. Several DSP examples are given, in particular on Texas Instruments DSPs, as they are used in the DSP laboratory companion of the lectures this paper is based upon. The typical system design flow is described; common difficulties, problems and choices faced by DSP developers are outlined; and hints are given on the best solution

    An Automated Design-flow for FPGA-based Sequential Simulation

    In this paper we describe the automated design flow that will transform and map a given homogeneous or heterogeneous hardware design into an FPGA that performs a cycle accurate simulation. The flow replaces the required manually performed transformation and can be embedded in existing standard synthesis flows. Compared to the earlier manually translated designs, this automated flow resulted in a reduced number of FPGA hardware resources and higher simulation frequencies.     A CAD Tool for Synthesizing Optimized Variants of Altera\u27s Nios II Soft-Core Processor

    Soft-core processors offer embedded system designers the benefits of customization, flexibility and reusability. Altera\u27s NIOS II soft-core processor is a popular, commercially available soft-core processor that can be implemented on a variety of Altera FPGAs. In this thesis, the Nios II soft-core processor from Altera Corporation was studied and a VHDL implementation, called UW_Nios II, was developed. UW_Nios II was developed to enable us to perform design space exploration (DSE) for the Nios II processor. It was evaluated and compared with Altera Nios II and shown to be competitive. SCBuild is an existing CAD tool that was developed to enable DSE of soft-core processors. We modified SCBuild to automatically explore the design space of the UW_Nios II using a genetic algorithm. This tool can accurately estimate the area and critical path delay of different variants of the UW_Nios II on a field programmable gate array. Through experiments conducted using SCBuild, it was shown that employing a genetic algorithm to explore the design space of parameterized Nios II core, with a large design space, helps designers find optimized variants of UW_Nios II

    Functional and timing implications of transient faults in critical systems

    Embedded systems in critical domains, such as auto-motive, aviation, space domains, are often required to guarantee both functional and temporal correctness. Considering transient faults, fault analysis and mitigation approaches are implemented at various levels of the system design, in order to maintain the functional correctness. However, transient faults and their mitigation methods have a timing impact, which can affect the temporal correctness of the system. In this work, we expose the functional and the timing implications of transient faults for critical systems. More precisely, we initially highlight the timing effect of transient faults occurring in the combinational and sequential logic of a processor. Furthermore, we propose a full stack vulnerability analysis that drives the design of selective hardware-based mitigation for real-time applications.     Survey of Soft Error Mitigation Techniques Applied to LEON3 Soft Processors on SRAM-Based FPGAs

    Soft-core processors implemented in SRAM-based FPGAs are an attractive option for applications to be employed in radiation environments due to their flexibility, relatively-low application development costs, and reconfigurability features enabling them to adapt to the evolving mission needs. Despite the advantages soft-core processors possess, they are seldom used in critical applications because they are more sensitive to radiation than their hard-core counterparts. For instance, both the logic and signal routing circuitry of a soft-core processor as well as its user memory are susceptible to radiation-induced faults. Therefore, soft-core processors must be appropriately hardened against ionizing-radiation to become a feasible design choice for harsh environments and thus to reap all their benefits. This survey henceforth discusses various techniques to protect the configuration and user memories of an LEON3 soft processor, which is one of the most widely used soft-core processors in radiation environments, as reported in the state-of-the-art literature, with the objective of facilitating the choice of right fault-mitigation solution for any given soft-core processor
