    Hardware Certification for Real-time Safety-critical Systems: State of the Art

    This paper discusses issues related to the RTCA document DO-254 Design Assurance Guidance for Airborne Electronic Hardware and its consequences for hardware certification. In particular, problems related to circuits’ compliance with DO-254 in avionics and other industries are considered. Extensive literature review of the subject is given, including current views on and experiences of chip manufacturers and EDA industry with qualification of hardware design tools, including formal approaches to hardware verification. Some results of the authors’ own study on tool qualification are presented

    Using System Analysis Modeling Language (SAML) for validating the critical aerospace model.

    System Analysis Modeling Language (SAML) is a formal language which helps in expressing and analyzing the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the software as well as hardware models. This can be used in model-based safety analysis (MBSA) which provides the means of identifying, localizing and analyzing hazards in these real-time Safety-Critical Systems. This paper describes the work carried out in the organization to validate the complex and critical Mode-Transition Logic (MTL) in Automated Flight Control System (AFCS) being developed in the organization. The Mode-Transition Logic (MTL) of the AFCS system is re-modeled using SAML and further analyzed with model checkers such as PRISM and NuSMV, for generation of counter-examples. The counter examples helped in mapping the safety scenarios along the AFCS requirements. These counter examples also helped in generating the fault model and analyzing the system logic for fault tolerance. Using NUSMV, MTL the failure scenarios were generated and the allowed transitions were studied. Failure management analysis report is generated and mapped as an artefact for the certification. For the illustration of the proposed approach, a suitable framework viz. Verification Environment for Safety-Critical Systems (VECS) is used to validate the utility of Mode-Transition Logic (MTL) in Automated Flight Control System (AFCS). The critical operations and complex functions were analyzed for contingency situations and provide means in significantly enhancing the safe operation of the Safety-Critical System. The mapping of the model safety using this approach will provide compliance with Civil Aerospace Standard DO-178C and DO-331 using Model-Based Design

    SCHEDULING REAL-TIME GRAPH-BASED WORKLOADS

    Developments in the semiconductor industry in the previous decades have made possible computing platforms with very large computing capacities that, in turn, have stimulated the rapid progress of computationally intensive computer vision (CV) algorithms with highly parallelizable structure (often represented as graphs). Applications using such algorithms are the foundation for the transformation of semi-autonomous systems (e.g., advanced driver-assist systems) to future fully-autonomous systems (e.g., self-driving cars). Enabling mass-produced safety-critical systems with full autonomy requires real-time execution guarantees as a part of system certification.Since multiple CV applications may need to share the same hardware platform due to size, weight, power, and cost constraints, system component isolation is necessary to avoid explosive interference growth that breaks all execution guarantees. Existing software certification processes achieve component isolation through time partitioning, which can be broken by accelerator usage, which is essential for high-efficacy CV algorithms.The goal of this dissertation is to make a first step towards providing real-time guarantees for safety-critical systems by analyzing the scheduling of highly parallel accelerator-using workloads isolated in system components. The specific contributions are threefold.First, a general method for graph-based workloads’ response-time-bound reduction through graph structure modifications is introduced, leading to significant response-time-bound reductions. Second, a generalized real-time task model is introduced that enables real-time response-time bounds for a wider range of graph-based workloads. A proposed response-time analysis for the introduced model accounts for potential accelerator usage within tasks. Third, a scheduling approach for graph-based workloads in a single system component is proposed that ensures the temporal isolation of system components. A response-time analysis for workloads with accelerator usage is presented alongside a non-mandatory schedulability-improvement step. This approach can help to enable component-wise certification in the considered systems.Doctor of Philosoph

    On the tailoring of CAST-32A certification guidance to real COTS multicore architectures

    The use of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) multicores in real-time industry is on the rise due to multicores' potential performance increase and energy reduction. Yet, the unpredictable impact on timing of contention in shared hardware resources challenges certification. Furthermore, most safety certification standards target single-core architectures and do not provide explicit guidance for multicore processors. Recently, however, CAST-32A has been presented providing guidance for software planning, development and verification in multicores.     Safety-related challenges and opportunities for GPUs in the automotive domain

    GPUs have been shown to cover the computing performance needs of autonomous driving (AD) systems. However, since the GPUs used for AD build on designs for the mainstream market, they may lack fundamental properties for correct operation under automotive's safety regulations.     Towards secure cyber-physical systems for autonomous vehicles

    Cyber-Physical systems have become ubiquitous. These systems integrate different functionalities to satisfy the performance requirements and take advantage of the available processing power of multi-core systems. Safety critical applications such as autonomous vehicles or medical devices rely not only on proving correct functionality of cyber-physical systems as essential certification criteria but they must also satisfy other design constraints such as energy efficiency, low power consumption and reliability. Their need to connect to the internet have created new challenges which means addressing the security vulnerabilities has become as the first-class design concern. In this talk, first a hardware/software co-design approach for two critical tasks, real-time pedestrian and vehicle detections, which are essential in advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving systems (ADS) is presented. We use partial dynamic reconfiguration on FPGA for adaptive vehicle detection. In the second part of this talk, a system-level security-aware design approach is presented to avoid or confine the impact of security compromises on the critical components of the cyber-physical systems implemented in multiprocessor systems on chip. Our system-level security approach considers the described system architecture for a specific application and analyzes its security vulnerability based on the specified security rules to generate an impact analysis report. Then, it creates a new system architecture configuration to protect the critical components of the system by providing isolation of tasks without the need to trust a central authority at run-time for heterogeneous multiprocessor system. This approach allows safe use of shared IP with direct memory access, as well as shared libraries by regulating memory accesses and the communications between the system components

    Development and certification of mixed-criticality embedded systems based on probabilistic timing analysis

    An increasing variety of emerging systems relentlessly replaces or augments the functionality of mechanical subsystems with embedded electronics. For quantity, complexity, and use, the safety of such subsystems is an increasingly important matter. Accordingly, those systems are subject to safety certification to demonstrate system's safety by rigorous development processes and hardware/software constraints. The massive augment in embedded processors' complexity renders the arduous certification task significantly harder to achieve. The focus of this thesis is to address the certification challenges in multicore architectures: despite their potential to integrate several applications on a single platform, their inherent complexity imperils their timing predictability and certification. Recently, the Measurement-Based Probabilistic Timing Analysis (MBPTA) technique emerged as an alternative to deal with hardware/software complexity. The innovation that MBPTA brings about is, however, a major step from current certification procedures and standards. The particular contributions of this Thesis include: (i) the definition of certification arguments for mixed-criticality integration upon multicore processors. In particular we propose a set of safety mechanisms and procedures as required to comply with functional safety standards. For timing predictability, (ii) we present a quantitative approach to assess the likelihood of execution-time exceedance events with respect to the risk reduction requirements on safety standards. To this end, we build upon the MBPTA approach and we present the design of a safety-related source of randomization (SoR), that plays a key role in the platform-level randomization needed by MBPTA. And (iii) we evaluate current certification guidance with respect to emerging high performance design trends like caches. Overall, this Thesis pushes the certification limits in the use of multicore and MBPTA technology in Critical Real-Time Embedded Systems (CRTES) and paves the way towards their adoption in industry.Una creciente variedad de sistemas emergentes reemplazan o aumentan la funcionalidad de subsistemas mecánicos con componentes electrónicos embebidos. El aumento en la cantidad y complejidad de dichos subsistemas electrónicos así como su cometido, hacen de su seguridad una cuestión de creciente importancia. Tanto es así que la comercialización de estos sistemas críticos está sujeta a rigurosos procesos de certificación donde se garantiza la seguridad del sistema mediante estrictas restricciones en el proceso de desarrollo y diseño de su hardware y software. Esta tesis trata de abordar los nuevos retos y dificultades dadas por la introducción de procesadores multi-núcleo en dichos sistemas críticos: aunque su mayor rendimiento despierta el interés de la industria para integrar múltiples aplicaciones en una sola plataforma, suponen una mayor complejidad. Su arquitectura desafía su análisis temporal mediante los métodos tradicionales y, asimismo, su certificación es cada vez más compleja y costosa. Con el fin de lidiar con estas limitaciones, recientemente se ha desarrollado una novedosa técnica de análisis temporal probabilístico basado en medidas (MBPTA). La innovación de esta técnica, sin embargo, supone un gran cambio cultural respecto a los estándares y procedimientos tradicionales de certificación. En esta línea, las contribuciones de esta tesis están agrupadas en tres ejes principales: (i) definición de argumentos de seguridad para la certificación de aplicaciones de criticidad-mixta sobre plataformas multi-núcleo. Se definen, en particular, mecanismos de seguridad, técnicas de diagnóstico y reacción de faltas acorde con el estándar IEC 61508 sobre una arquitectura multi-núcleo de referencia. Respecto al análisis temporal, (ii) presentamos la cuantificación de la probabilidad de exceder un límite temporal y su relación con los requisitos de reducción de riesgos derivados de los estándares de seguridad funcional. Con este fin, nos basamos en la técnica MBPTA y presentamos el diseño de una fuente de números aleatorios segura; un componente clave para conseguir las propiedades aleatorias requeridas por MBPTA a nivel de plataforma. Por último, (iii) extrapolamos las guías actuales para la certificación de arquitecturas multi-núcleo a una solución comercial de 8 núcleos y las evaluamos con respecto a las tendencias emergentes de diseño de alto rendimiento (caches). Con estas contribuciones, esta tesis trata de abordar los retos que el uso de procesadores multi-núcleo y MBPTA implican en el proceso de certificación de sistemas críticos de tiempo real y facilita, de esta forma, su adopción por la industria.Postprint (published version

    Assurance Benefits of ISO 26262 compliant Microcontrollers for safety-critical Avionics

    The usage of complex Microcontroller Units (MCUs) in avionic systems constitutes a challenge in assuring their safety. They are not developed according to the development requirements accepted by the aerospace industry. These Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware components usually target other domains like the telecommunication branch. In the last years MCUs developed in compliance to the ISO 26262 have been released on the market for safety-related automotive applications. The avionic assurance process could profit from these safety MCUs.
