    Get PDF
This paper deals with the influence of chroma subsampling on video quality measured by objective metrics for H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC compression standards. The evaluation is done for eight types of sequences with full HD and ultra HD resolutions depending on content. The experimental results showed that there is no impact of chroma subsampling on the video. According to the results, it can also be said that H.265/HEVC codec yields better compression efficiency than H.264/AVC and the different is more visible in UHD resolution. The bigger difference in quality is in lower bitrates, with increasing bitrate the quality of H.264/AVC codec approaches the H.265/HEVC codec

abstract: Video encoding for multimedia services over communication networks has significantly advanced in recent years with the development of the highly efficient and flexible H.264/AVC video coding standard and its SVC extension. The emerging H.265/HEVC video coding standard as well as 3D video coding further advance video coding for multimedia communications. This paper first gives an overview of these new video coding standards and then examines their implications for multimedia communications by studying the traffic characteristics of long videos encoded with the new coding standards. We review video coding advances from MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 Part 2 to H.264/AVC and its SVC and MVC extensions as well as H.265/HEVC. For single-layer (nonscalable) video, we compare H.265/HEVC and H.264/AVC in terms of video traffic and statistical multiplexing characteristics. Our study is the first to examine the H.265/HEVC traffic variability for long videos. We also illustrate the video traffic characteristics and statistical multiplexing of scalable video encoded with the SVC extension of H.264/AVC as well as 3D video encoded with the MVC extension of H.264/AVC.View the article as published at https://www.hindawi.com/journals/tswj/2014/189481

High-efficiency video compression technology is of primary importance to the storage and transmission of digital medical video in modern medical communication systems. To further improve the compression performance of medical ultrasound video, two innovative technologies based on diagnostic region-of-interest (ROI) extraction using the high efficiency video coding (H.265/HEVC) standard are presented in this paper. First, an effective ROI extraction algorithm based on image textural features is proposed to strengthen the applicability of ROI detection results in the H.265/HEVC quad-tree coding structure. Second, a hierarchical coding method based on transform coefficient adjustment and a quantization parameter (QP) selection process is designed to implement the otherness encoding for ROIs and non-ROIs. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed optimization strategy significantly improves the coding performance by achieving a BD-BR reduction of 13.52% and a BD-PSNR gain of 1.16 dB on average compared to H.265/HEVC (HM15.0). The proposed medical video coding algorithm is expected to satisfy low bit-rate compression requirements for modern medical communication systems

Model-independent rate control for intra-coding based on piecewise linear approximations

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a rate control (RC) algorithm for intra-coded sequences (I-frames) within the context of block-based predictive transform coding that departs from using trained models to approximate the rate-distortion (R-D) characteristics of the video sequence. Our algorithm employs piecewise linear approximations of the rate-distortion (R-D) curve of a frame at the block-level. Specifically, it employs information about the rate and distortion of already compressed blocks within the current frame to linearly approximate the slope of the R-D curve of each block. The proposed algorithm is implemented in the High-Efficiency Video Coding (H.265/HEVC) standard and compared with its current RC algorithm, which is based on a trained model. Evaluations on a variety of intra-coded sequences show that the proposed RC algorithm not only attains the overall target bit rate more accurately than the RC algorithm used by H.265/HEVC algorithm but is also capable of encoding each I-frame at a more constant bit rate according to the overall bit budget

This work introduces the multiframe motion-compensation enhancement network (MMCE-Net), a deep-learning tool aimed at improving the performance of current video coding standards based on motion-compensation, such as H.265/HEVC. The proposed method improves the inter-prediction coding efficiency by enhancing the accuracy of the motion-compensated frame and thereby improving the rate-distortion performance. MMCE-Net is a neural network that jointly exploits the predicted coding unit and two co-located coding units from previous reference frames to improve the estimation of the temporal evolution of the scene. This letter describes the architecture of MMCE-Net, how it is integrated into H.265/HEVC and the corresponding performance

Master's thesis deals with the assessment of quality of Ultra HDTV video sequences applying objective metrics. Thesis theoretically describes coding of selected codecs H.265/HEVC and VP9, objective video quality metrics and also subjective methods for assessment of the video sequences quality. Next chapter deals with the implementation of the H.265/HEVC and the VP9 codecs at selected video sequences in the raw format from which arises the test sequences database. Quality of these videos is measured afterwards by objective metrics and selected subjective method. These results are compared for the purpose of finding the most consistent correlations among objective metrics and subjective assessment.
