    Optimization Of Frequency Filtering In Random Access Jpeg Library

    In the paper we present a method of direct access to single blocks of JPEG files whichcontain textures, with on-the-fly decompression. Anisotropic, adaptive filtering is applied inorder to minimize visual defects appearing mainly on blocks borders. Main purpose of themethod is to enable fast extraction of only these parts of an entire image which are currentlyneeded and not to keep whole decompressed texture in the main memory. This approachenables effective usage of high quality textures with low memory consumption. It’s benefitsare mainly demonstrated in rendering complex 3D scenes using nondeterministic ray-tracingalgorithm. The algorithms have been encapsulated into DLL and static library

    Efficient Point-Cloud Processing with Primitive Shapes

    This thesis presents methods for efficient processing of point-clouds based on primitive shapes. The set of considered simple parametric shapes consists of planes, spheres, cylinders, cones and tori. The algorithms developed in this work are targeted at scenarios in which the occurring surfaces can be well represented by this set of shape primitives which is the case in many man-made environments such as e.g. industrial compounds, cities or building interiors. A primitive subsumes a set of corresponding points in the point-cloud and serves as a proxy for them. Therefore primitives are well suited to directly address the unavoidable oversampling of large point-clouds and lay the foundation for efficient point-cloud processing algorithms. The first contribution of this thesis is a novel shape primitive detection method that is efficient even on very large and noisy point-clouds. Several applications for the detected primitives are subsequently explored, resulting in a set of novel algorithms for primitive-based point-cloud processing in the areas of compression, recognition and completion. Each of these application directly exploits and benefits from one or more of the detected primitives' properties such as approximation, abstraction, segmentation and continuability

    Information embedding and retrieval in 3D printed objects

    Deep learning and convolutional neural networks have become the main tools of computer vision. These techniques are good at using supervised learning to learn complex representations from data. In particular, under limited settings, the image recognition model now performs better than the human baseline. However, computer vision science aims to build machines that can see. It requires the model to be able to extract more valuable information from images and videos than recognition. Generally, it is much more challenging to apply these deep learning models from recognition to other problems in computer vision. This thesis presents end-to-end deep learning architectures for a new computer vision field: watermark retrieval from 3D printed objects. As it is a new area, there is no state-of-the-art on many challenging benchmarks. Hence, we first define the problems and introduce the traditional approach, Local Binary Pattern method, to set our baseline for further study. Our neural networks seem useful but straightfor- ward, which outperform traditional approaches. What is more, these networks have good generalization. However, because our research field is new, the problems we face are not only various unpredictable parameters but also limited and low-quality training data. To address this, we make two observations: (i) we do not need to learn everything from scratch, we know a lot about the image segmentation area, and (ii) we cannot know everything from data, our models should be aware what key features they should learn. This thesis explores these ideas and even explore more. We show how to use end-to-end deep learning models to learn to retrieve watermark bumps and tackle covariates from a few training images data. Secondly, we introduce ideas from synthetic image data and domain randomization to augment training data and understand various covariates that may affect retrieve real-world 3D watermark bumps. We also show how the illumination in synthetic images data to effect and even improve retrieval accuracy for real-world recognization applications

    Stereoscopic high dynamic range imaging

    Two modern technologies show promise to dramatically increase immersion in virtual environments. Stereoscopic imaging captures two images representing the views of both eyes and allows for better depth perception. High dynamic range (HDR) imaging accurately represents real world lighting as opposed to traditional low dynamic range (LDR) imaging. HDR provides a better contrast and more natural looking scenes. The combination of the two technologies in order to gain advantages of both has been, until now, mostly unexplored due to the current limitations in the imaging pipeline. This thesis reviews both fields, proposes stereoscopic high dynamic range (SHDR) imaging pipeline outlining the challenges that need to be resolved to enable SHDR and focuses on capture and compression aspects of that pipeline. The problems of capturing SHDR images that would potentially require two HDR cameras and introduce ghosting, are mitigated by capturing an HDR and LDR pair and using it to generate SHDR images. A detailed user study compared four different methods of generating SHDR images. Results demonstrated that one of the methods may produce images perceptually indistinguishable from the ground truth. Insights obtained while developing static image operators guided the design of SHDR video techniques. Three methods for generating SHDR video from an HDR-LDR video pair are proposed and compared to the ground truth SHDR videos. Results showed little overall error and identified a method with the least error. Once captured, SHDR content needs to be efficiently compressed. Five SHDR compression methods that are backward compatible are presented. The proposed methods can encode SHDR content to little more than that of a traditional single LDR image (18% larger for one method) and the backward compatibility property encourages early adoption of the format. The work presented in this thesis has introduced and advanced capture and compression methods for the adoption of SHDR imaging. In general, this research paves the way for a novel field of SHDR imaging which should lead to improved and more realistic representation of captured scenes

    Leveraging elasticity theory to calculate cell forces: From analytical insights to machine learning

    Living cells possess capabilities to detect and respond to mechanical features of their surroundings. In traction force microscopy, the traction of cells on an elastic substrate is made visible by observing substrate deformation as measured by the movement of embedded marker beads. Describing the substrates by means of elasticity theory, we can calculate the adhesive forces, improving our understanding of cellular function and behavior. In this dissertation, I combine analytical solutions with numerical methods and machine learning techniques to improve traction prediction in a range of experimental applications. I describe how to include the normal traction component in regularization-based Fourier approaches, which I apply to experimental data. I compare the dominant strategies for traction reconstruction, the direct method and inverse, regularization-based approaches and find, that the latter are more precise while the former is more stress resilient to noise. I find that a point-force based reconstruction can be used to study the force balance evolution in response to microneedle pulling showing a transition from a dipolar into a monopolar force arrangement. Finally, I show how a conditional invertible neural network not only reconstructs adhesive areas more localized, but also reveals spatial correlations and variations in reliability of traction reconstructions

    Compression, Modeling, and Real-Time Rendering of Realistic Materials and Objects

    The realism of a scene basically depends on the quality of the geometry, the illumination and the materials that are used. Whereas many sources for the creation of three-dimensional geometry exist and numerous algorithms for the approximation of global illumination were presented, the acquisition and rendering of realistic materials remains a challenging problem. Realistic materials are very important in computer graphics, because they describe the reflectance properties of surfaces, which are based on the interaction of light and matter. In the real world, an enormous diversity of materials can be found, comprising very different properties. One important objective in computer graphics is to understand these processes, to formalize them and to finally simulate them. For this purpose various analytical models do already exist, but their parameterization remains difficult as the number of parameters is usually very high. Also, they fail for very complex materials that occur in the real world. Measured materials, on the other hand, are prone to long acquisition time and to huge input data size. Although very efficient statistical compression algorithms were presented, most of them do not allow for editability, such as altering the diffuse color or mesostructure. In this thesis, a material representation is introduced that makes it possible to edit these features. This makes it possible to re-use the acquisition results in order to easily and quickly create deviations of the original material. These deviations may be subtle, but also substantial, allowing for a wide spectrum of material appearances. The approach presented in this thesis is not based on compression, but on a decomposition of the surface into several materials with different reflection properties. Based on a microfacette model, the light-matter interaction is represented by a function that can be stored in an ordinary two-dimensional texture. Additionally, depth information, local rotations, and the diffuse color are stored in these textures. As a result of the decomposition, some of the original information is inevitably lost, therefore an algorithm for the efficient simulation of subsurface scattering is presented as well. Another contribution of this work is a novel perception-based simplification metric that includes the material of an object. This metric comprises features of the human visual system, for example trichromatic color perception or reduced resolution.     End-to-end anomaly detection in stream data

    Nowadays, huge volumes of data are generated with increasing velocity through various systems, applications, and activities. This increases the demand for stream and time series analysis to react to changing conditions in real-time for enhanced efficiency and quality of service delivery as well as upgraded safety and security in private and public sectors. Despite its very rich history, time series anomaly detection is still one of the vital topics in machine learning research and is receiving increasing attention. Identifying hidden patterns and selecting an appropriate model that fits the observed data well and also carries over to unobserved data is not a trivial task. Due to the increasing diversity of data sources and associated stochastic processes, this pivotal data analysis topic is loaded with various challenges like complex latent patterns, concept drift, and overfitting that may mislead the model and cause a high false alarm rate. Handling these challenges leads the advanced anomaly detection methods to develop sophisticated decision logic, which turns them into mysterious and inexplicable black-boxes. Contrary to this trend, end-users expect transparency and verifiability to trust a model and the outcomes it produces. Also, pointing the users to the most anomalous/malicious areas of time series and causal features could save them time, energy, and money. For the mentioned reasons, this thesis is addressing the crucial challenges in an end-to-end pipeline of stream-based anomaly detection through the three essential phases of behavior prediction, inference, and interpretation. The first step is focused on devising a time series model that leads to high average accuracy as well as small error deviation. On this basis, we propose higher-quality anomaly detection and scoring techniques that utilize the related contexts to reclassify the observations and post-pruning the unjustified events. Last but not least, we make the predictive process transparent and verifiable by providing meaningful reasoning behind its generated results based on the understandable concepts by a human. The provided insight can pinpoint the anomalous regions of time series and explain why the current status of a system has been flagged as anomalous. Stream-based anomaly detection research is a principal area of innovation to support our economy, security, and even the safety and health of societies worldwide. We believe our proposed analysis techniques can contribute to building a situational awareness platform and open new perspectives in a variety of domains like cybersecurity, and health
