Design of exponential state estimators for neural networks with mixed time delays
This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be obtained from the link below - Copyright 2007 Elsevier Ltd.In this Letter, the state estimation problem is dealt with for a class of recurrent neural networks (RNNs) with mixed discrete and distributed delays. The activation functions are assumed to be neither monotonic, nor differentiable, nor bounded. We aim at designing a state estimator to estimate the neuron states, through available output measurements, such that the dynamics of the estimation error is globally exponentially stable in the presence of mixed time delays. By using the Laypunov–Krasovskii functional, a linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is developed to establish sufficient conditions to guarantee the existence of the state estimators. We show that both the existence conditions and the explicit expression of the desired estimator can be characterized in terms of the solution to an LMI. A simulation example is exploited to show the usefulness of the derived LMI-based stability conditions. This work was supported in part by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the UK under Grant GR/S27658/01, the Nuffield Foundation of the UK under Grant NAL/00630/G, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany, the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Education Committee of China under Grants 05KJB110154 and BK2006064, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 10471119 and 10671172

A delay-dependent LMI approach to dynamics analysis of discrete-time recurrent neural networks with time-varying delays
This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be obtained from the link below - Copyright 2007 Elsevier Ltd.In this Letter, the analysis problem for the existence and stability of periodic solutions is investigated for a class of general discrete-time recurrent neural networks with time-varying delays. For the neural networks under study, a generalized activation function is considered, and the traditional assumptions on the boundedness, monotony and differentiability of the activation functions are removed. By employing the latest free-weighting matrix method, an appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional is constructed and several sufficient conditions are established to ensure the existence, uniqueness, and globally exponential stability of the periodic solution for the addressed neural network. The conditions are dependent on both the lower bound and upper bound of the time-varying time delays. Furthermore, the conditions are expressed in terms of the linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), which can be checked numerically using the effective LMI toolbox in MATLAB. Two simulation examples are given to show the effectiveness and less conservatism of the proposed criteria. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant 50608072, an International Joint Project sponsored by the Royal Society of the UK and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation of Germany

New synchronization criteria for an array of neural networks with hybrid coupling and time-varying delays
This paper is concerned with the global exponential synchronization for an array of hybrid coupled neural networks with time-varying leakage delay, discrete and distributed delays. Applying a novel Lyapunov functional and the property of outer coupling matrices of the neural networks, sufficient conditions are obtained for the global exponential synchronization of the system. The derived synchronization criteria are closely related with the time-varying delays and the coupling structure of the networks. The maximal allowable upper bounds of the time-varying delays can be obtained guaranteeing the global synchronization for the neural networks. The method we adopt in this paper is different from the commonly used linear matrix inequality (LMI) technique, and our synchronization conditions are new, which are easy to check in comparison with the previously reported LMI-based ones. Some examples are given to show the effectiveness of the obtained theoretical results
ψ-type stability of reaction–diffusion neural networks with time-varying discrete delays and bounded distributed delays
In this paper, the ψ-type stability and robust ψ-type stability for reaction–diffusion neural networks (RDNNs) with Dirichlet boundary conditions, time-varying discrete delays and bounded distributed delays are investigated, respectively. Firstly, we analyze the ψ-type stability and robust ψ-type stability of RDNNs with time-varying discrete delays by means of ψ-type functions combined with some inequality techniques, and put forward several ψ-type stability criteria for the considered networks. Additionally, the models of RDNNs with bounded distributed delays are established and some sufficient conditions to guarantee the ψ-type stability and robust ψ-type stability are given. Lastly, two examples are provided to confirm the effectiveness of the derived results
Projective synchronization analysis for BAM neural networks with time-varying delay via novel control
In this paper, the projective synchronization of BAM neural networks with time-varying delays is studied. Firstly, a type of novel adaptive controller is introduced for the considered neural networks, which can achieve projective synchronization. Then, based on the adaptive controller, some novel and useful conditions are obtained to ensure the projective synchronization of considered neural networks. To our knowledge, different from other forms of synchronization, projective synchronization is more suitable to clearly represent the nonlinear systems’ fragile nature. Besides, we solve the projective synchronization problem between two different chaotic BAM neural networks, while most of the existing works only concerned with the projective synchronization chaotic systems with the same topologies. Compared with the controllers in previous papers, the designed controllers in this paper do not require any activation functions during the application process. Finally, an example is provided to show the effectiveness of the theoretical results
Exponential synchronization for reaction-diffusion neural networks with mixed time-varying delays via periodically intermittent control
This paper deals with the exponential synchronization problem for reaction-diffusion neural networks with mixed time-varying delays and stochastic disturbance. By using stochastic analysis approaches and constructing a novel Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional, a periodically intermittent controller is first proposed to guarantee the exponential synchronization of reaction-diffusion neural networks with mixed time-varying delays and stochastic disturbance in terms of p-norm. The obtained synchronization results are easy to check and improve upon the existing ones. Particularly, the traditional assumptions on control width and time-varying delays are removed in this paper. This paper also presents two illustrative examples and uses simulated results of these examples to show the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed scheme
Synchronization for a class of generalized neural networks with interval time-varying delays and reaction-diffusion terms
In this paper, the synchronization problem for a class of generalized neural networks with interval time-varying delays and reaction-diffusion terms is investigated under Dirichlet boundary conditions and Neumann boundary conditions, respectively. Based on Lyapunov stability theory, both delay-derivative-dependent and delay-range-dependent conditions are derived in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs), whose solvability heavily depends on the information of reaction-diffusion terms. The proposed generalized neural networks model includes reaction-diffusion local field neural networks and reaction-diffusion static neural networks as its special cases. The obtained synchronization results are easy to check and improve upon the existing ones. In our results, the assumptions for the differentiability and monotonicity on the activation functions are removed. It is assumed that the state delay belongs to a given interval, which means that the lower bound of delay is not restricted to be zero. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed methods is shown by simulation examples
Preserving Global Exponential Stability of Hybrid BAM Neural Networks with Reaction Diffusion Terms in the Presence of Stochastic Noise and Connection Weight Matrices Uncertainty
We study the impact of stochastic noise and connection weight matrices uncertainty on global exponential stability of hybrid BAM neural networks with
reaction diffusion terms. Given globally exponentially stable hybrid BAM neural
networks with reaction diffusion terms, the question to be addressed here is how much
stochastic noise and connection weights matrices uncertainty the neural networks can
tolerate while maintaining global exponential stability. The upper threshold of stochastic noise and connection weights matrices uncertainty is defined by using the
transcendental equations. We find that the perturbed hybrid BAM neural networks
with reaction diffusion terms preserve global exponential stability if the intensity of
both stochastic noise and connection weights matrices uncertainty is smaller than the
defined upper threshold. A numerical example is also provided to illustrate the theoretical conclusion
