    InfoHarness: Managing Distributed, Heterogeneous Information

    Get PDF
Today, important information is scattered in so many places, formats, and media, that getting the right information at the right time and place is an extremely difficult task. Developing a single software product, for example, includes the creation of documents ranging from the requirements specification and project schedules to marketing presentations, multimedia tutorials, and more. Each document may be created by a different person using a different tool, and each may be stored in a different place. InfoHarness is an information integration system, platform, and tool set that addresses these problems, managing huge amounts of heterogeneous information in a distributed environment. Through a powerful, consistent user interface, InfoHarness provides rapid search of and access to information assets including documents and parts of documents, mail messages, images, code files, video clips, Web pages with URLs, InfoHarness queries, and views of relational tables. The system makes all these artifacts available without relocating, restructuring, or reformatting the data

Tämä on Ruukki Oy:n Raahen tehtaalle toteutettu opinnäytetyö, jonka tavoite oli luoda ohjelma ja valvoa siihen lisättyjen laitteiden saavutettavuutta verkossa. Aiemmin tiedot toimimattomista laitteista kulkivat useamman välikäden kautta esimerkiksi työntekijältä työnjohtajalle, joka taas ottaa yhteyttä parhaakseen katsomaansa henkilöön. Tässä ketjussa saattaa kestää pitkiäkin aikoja. Tästä johtuva tauko saattaa laskea tuotannon laitteiden toimintatehoa suurestikin. Aluksi mietittiin eri tekniikoita ja niiden sopimista työn toteuttamiseen. Ohjelmapuolen ohjelmointikieliksi mietittiin C++, C# ja JAVA. Verkkopuolella mietittiin, sopiiko tehtävään parhaiten PHP, ASP vai ASP.NET. Lopulta päädyttiin tulokseen C# ja ASP.NET. Kehitysympäristönä toimi Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 ohjelman kehityksessä, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Management Studio tietokantojen suunnittelussa ja Microsoft WebMatrix verkkosivujen kehityksessä. Ohjelma toimii Ruukin sisäverkossa ja käyttää hyväkseen sisäverkon pingattavuutta. Ohjelma tulee nostamaan siihen lisättyjen laitteiden käyttöastetta ja tehoa laskemalla niiden korjauksen aloittamiseen tarvittavaa aikaa, koska vika saatetaan huomata, ennen kuin käyttäjä sitä havaitsee ja tiedot tapahtuneesta menevät suoraan oikealle henkilölle. Lopputulokseksi kehittyi ohjelma, jolla voidaan helposti valvoa tarvittujen laitteiden saavutettavuutta sisäverkossa. The goal of this bachelor’s thesis was to create a programme for Ruukki's factory in Raahe, capable of monitoring the devices e.g. computers added to the programme. Earlier the information about broken or otherwise disconnected devices or computers went from the users to their supervisor, who then contacted the person who may or may not be the right person to fix the problem. Finding the right person might take very long periods of time and the point of this programme is to reduce this downtime dramatically. C# was selected for the programming language and the environment for developing the programme is Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. The database used is Microsoft SQL Server 2008 and the programme employed in managing and updating is Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008. The techniques used to create the web user interface of the program are HTML, ASP.NET MVC3, JQuery and CSS. The program is used in Ruukki's internal network and uses the good "pingability" of internal network to its advantage. The point of the program is to raise utilisation and efficiency of the various devices added to the program by getting the right information to the right people. The final product is a program capable of easily monitoring the accessibility of devices connected to the internal network

Batch and Streaming Data Ingestion towards Creating Holistic Health Records

    Get PDF
The healthcare sector has been moving toward Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems that produce enormous amounts of healthcare data due to the increased emphasis on getting the appropriate information to the right person, wherever they are, at any time. This highlights the need for a holistic approach to ingest, exploit, and manage these huge amounts of data for achieving better health management and promotion in general. This manuscript proposes such an approach, providing a mechanism allowing all health ecosystem entities to obtain actionable knowledge from heterogeneous data in a multimodal way. The mechanism includes diverse techniques for automatically ingesting healthcare-related information from heterogeneous sources that produce batch/streaming data, managing, fusing, and aggregating this data into new data structures (i.e., Holistic Health Records (HHRs)). The latter enable the aggregation of data coming from different sources, such as Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) devices, online/offline platforms, while to effectively construct the HHRs, the mechanism develops various data management techniques covering the overall data path, from data acquisition and cleaning to data integration, modelling, and interpretation. The mechanism has been evaluated upon different healthcare scenarios, ranging from hospital-retrieved data to patient platforms, combined with data obtained from IoMT devices, having produced useful insights towards its successful and wide adaptation in this domain. In order to implement a paradigm shift from heterogeneous and independent data sources, limited data exploitation, and health records, the mechanism has combined multidisciplinary technologies toward HHRs. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2023-07-02-03 Full Text: PD

A model of knowledge management system for facilitating knowledge as a service (KaaS) in cloud computing environment

Knowledge as a service (KaaS) is an emerging concept that integrates knowledge management (KM), a knowledge organization, and knowledge markets. KaaS are programs that provide content-based (data, information, knowledge) as organizational outputs (e.g., advice, answers, facilitation), to meet person or external user wants or needs. KaaS are delivered through the knowledge markets as a cloud computing (CC) environment. In ensuring the services will be delivered to the right community of practice (CoP) at the right time in a proper manner, therefore there is a need of a system called knowledge management system (KMS), so that the KaaS can be well managed in a proper form by using the KM life cycle processes. These life cycle processes are including the knowledge acquisition, knowledge storage, knowledge dissemination and knowledge application. This paper presents the concept and its model for facilitating knowledge as a service (KaaS) in a KM system so that CoP can make used the knowledge from service provider as organizational output for their referencing in the context of current best practice and lesson learnt especially related to the CC environment. By using this KMS model, the community who are engaged or connected to the cloud can be easily getting the KaaS as they are wanted or to be considered for the potential purposes in achieving their goal or mission statement

Securing talented employees is one of the most critical requirements for organizational growth. At the same time, job seekers’ primary concern is getting a position that is in line with their career goals. Particularly, for job seekers who are looking to begin their career after graduation, it is essential to step off on the right foot. To fulfill the needs of organization and job applicant, job advertisements play a significant role. The current study examines the use and perceptions of hiring information by job seekers. The job search and organizational entry processes necessarily produce a certain degree of uncertainty, and job advertisements are one of the key contributors in that process. According to uncertainty management theory, uncertainty results in optimistic or pessimistic emotion about the source of uncertainty, and the elicited emotions influence additional information seeking behavior. Likewise, uncertainty in job search processes may impact job seekers’ efforts in seeking additional information. Thus, the present investigation examines the impact of uncertainty, which originates from job advertisements, on job seekers’ subsequent uncertainty appraisal and information seeking. In addition, the study investigates influences of three factors, such as proactive personality, person-organization (P-O) fit, and job search stress, on job seekers’ appraisals of uncertainty. A web-based experiment was conducted using three different hypothetical job advertisements that varied in degree of uncertainty they were designed to induce. Data were collected from a sample of university students (N = 396) to evaluate the degree to which the advertisement impacted their job-related information searching and perceptions. The results revealed that uncertainty appraisals predict job seekers’ subsequent information seeking intention in that optimistic views about uncertainty negatively associate with the intention to seek information. In addition, job seekers with optimistic views are more likely to seek positive information about the hiring organization. Proactive personality, subjective P-O fit, and job search stress were also identified as significant factors that influence job seekers’ appraisals of uncertainty. In sum, the current study found that job seekers’ uncertainty appraisals influenced by triadic reciprocal relationships of personal factor, behavioral cognitions, and environmental factors, and the uncertainty appraisals relate back to further information seeking

Abstract Knowledge management has become one of the main topics of study in the field of people. Managing knowledge means managing the processes of creation, development, dissemination and exploitation of knowledge to gain competitive edge. According to Woodman (1985) “Managing knowledge is a process that covers everything related to getting the right information in the right way, for the right person, at the right cost, at the right time in the right place, in order to take the right action“. This description covers all the objectives of information management, that is to say potentiate and take advantage of the benefits of information management, minimize costs of acquiring knowledge and ensure a continuous supply of information. The consideration of knowledge as an essential strategic resource and the ability from the organizations to create it and apply it as a fundamental skill, it leads to an important advance in the evolution of strategic management. According to some authors, the basic resource in today’s organizations is no longer the capital but the knowledge. If before the core asset was the capital, today knowledge replaces the capital as a critical resource, which constitutes a challenge for organizations, the ability to generate knowledge, manage it and build processes to integrate and leverage the most important resources, the knowledge and its skills. In the present work, from an organized lens are exposed, the most important theoretical aspects of what is known as knowledge management, approaches to the concept, explanatory models and application in organizations. The methodology used is the systematic review without meta-analysis, by which the existing literature is revised and organized with the objective of providing a critical view of the topic brought up. &nbsp
