    Contextual information aided target tracking and path planning for autonomous ground vehicles

    Recently, autonomous vehicles have received worldwide attentions from academic research, automotive industry and the general public. In order to achieve a higher level of automation, one of the most fundamental requirements of autonomous vehicles is the capability to respond to internal and external changes in a safe, timely and appropriate manner. Situational awareness and decision making are two crucial enabling technologies for safe operation of autonomous vehicles. This thesis presents a solution for improving the automation level of autonomous vehicles in both situational awareness and decision making aspects by utilising additional domain knowledge such as constraints and influence on a moving object caused by environment and interaction between different moving objects. This includes two specific sub-systems, model based target tracking in environmental perception module and motion planning in path planning module. In the first part, a rigorous Bayesian framework is developed for pooling road constraint information and sensor measurement data of a ground vehicle to provide better situational awareness. Consequently, a new multiple targets tracking (MTT) strategy is proposed for solving target tracking problems with nonlinear dynamic systems and additional state constraints. Besides road constraint information, a vehicle movement is generally affected by its surrounding environment known as interaction information. A novel dynamic modelling approach is then proposed by considering the interaction information as virtual force which is constructed by involving the target state, desired dynamics and interaction information. The proposed modelling approach is then accommodated in the proposed MTT strategy for incorporating different types of domain knowledge in a comprehensive manner. In the second part, a new path planning strategy for autonomous vehicles operating in partially known dynamic environment is suggested. The proposed MTT technique is utilized to provide accurate on-board tracking information with associated level of uncertainty. Based on the tracking information, a path planning strategy is developed to generate collision free paths by not only predicting the future states of the moving objects but also taking into account the propagation of the associated estimation uncertainty within a given horizon. To cope with a dynamic and uncertain road environment, the strategy is implemented in a receding horizon fashion

    Framework of damage detection in vehicle-bridge coupled system and application to bridge scour monitoring

    Most vibration-based damage identification methods make use of measurements directly from bridge structures with attached sensors. However, the vehicle moving on the bridge can serve as both an active actuator and a response receiver. This dissertation aimed to develop new methodologies to eventually detect bridge damages such as scour using the dynamic response of the vehicle. To reach the final objective, a framework of damage identification was developed first, which gave a guideline on the three crucial steps for damage detection. An optimization method was proposed that combines the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the First Order (FO) method. It has the advantages of the global and local algorithms and converges faster than the traditional method using any initial values. Secondly, a new methodology using the transmissibility of vehicle and bridge responses was developed to detect bridge damages. The transmissibility of a simplified vehicle-bridge coupled (VBC) system was analyzed theoretically and numerically to study the feasibility of this method. To obtain the transmissibility, two methods were proposed using two “static” vehicles on the bridge. Then, a tractor-trailer test system was designed to obtain reliable responses and extract bridge modal properties from the dynamic response of moving vehicles. The test vehicle consists of a tractor and two following trailers. The residual responses of the two trailers were used, which successfully eliminated the roughness and vehicle driving effect and extracted the bridge modal properties. This methodology was applied on a field bridge and revealed a good performance. Most previous studies of bridge scour focus on the scour causes instead of its consequences. Finally, in this dissertation the developed methodologies were applied to detect scour damage from the response of bridge and/or vehicles. The scour effect on a single pile was studied and methods of scour damage detections were proposed. A monitoring system using fiber optic sensors was designed and tested in the laboratory and is being applied to a field bridge. Finally, the scour effect on the response of the entire bridge and the traveling vehicle was also investigated under the bridge-vehicle-wave interaction, which in turn was used to detect the bridge scour

    Conflict Resolution in Autonomous Operations Area airspace

    A paradigm shift is at hand with the planned redesign of the Air Traffic Management and Air Traffic Control systems. The concept for the future air traffic system foresees that aircraft will monitor and maintain separation to each other by themselves in Autonomous Operations Area airspace. With this shift of responsibility for separation assurance from Air Traffic Control to the flight deck crews a more flexible and better airspace usage is expected. Furthermore, through the more flexible airspace usage, a gain in flight efficiency is also anticipated. In order to operate in this airspace area, aircraft are required to be equipped with a system enabling them to detect and resolve air traffic conflicts. Upon detection of a conflict with another aircraft, the system is expected to compute an alternative trajectory which guides the aircraft around the conflict and back to its original trajectory. The alternative trajectory needs to adhere to several requirements, such as being clear of conflicts and being flyable. Further requirements that are often stated are to minimise the additional fuel and time required for the resolution. This thesis is concerned with such a Conflict Detection & Resolution system. Primary focus lies on the resolution of air traffic conflicts while guaranteeing flyability and respecting the Cost Index. The Cost Index is nowadays used by the Flight Management System to optimise the flight profile in respect to the operators prioritisation of fuel-related to time-related costs. This paramter is included into the Conflict Resolution process which is based on Artificial Force Fields. Flyability of the trajectory is intended to be guaranteed through integration of a flight mechanics model. The algorithm devised in this work is validated in fast time simulations with varying Cost Index. Objects of study are the distance at the Closest Point of Approach, the integration of the Cost Index and the flyability of the resulting trajectory. The first two objects of this study will be validated through comparison of the original and updated trajectory. The new trajectory is considered conflict free if the distance at the Closest Point of Approach is sufficiently large. The lateral, vertical and temporal differences between the two trajectories are used as measures for time- and fuel-related costs. Flyability of the resulting trajectory is validated by confirming adherence to the flight envelope and the constraints given by the flight mechanics model used. The evaluation of the algorithm showed that by integration of a flight mechanics model flyability of the resulting trajectory could be assured. Regarding resolution of the conflicts, the algorithm could compute a trajectory which prevented the initially set up Mid-Air Collision between the aircraft. Though, the minimum required separation could not be achieved in all cases. The approach of integrating the Cost Index into the resolution process showed to be feasible, whereas especially regarding the speed resolution further enhancements have been found to be necessary
