    This paper reviews the work that has been done in the past 10 years at the Lodz University of technology about the visualization and the quantification of phenomena related to degradation processes (i.e. stress corrosion cracking in stainless steel, fatigue crack in titanium alloys) in engineering materials as well as granular flow in silos using X-ray imaging (i.e. radiography and (micro)tomography). Besides presenting the experimental protocols, the paper also presents the image processing strategies that have been applied to enable the extraction of characteristic parameters from the volumetric images.Artykuł przedstawia przegląd prac badawczych przeprowadzonych w ostatnich 10 latach w Politechnice Łódzkiej, dotyczących wizualizacji oraz analizy ilościowej zjawisk mających miejsce w procesie degradacji materiałów (tj. korozji naprężeniowej stali nierdzewnej, pęknięcia stopów tytanu) oraz przepływu materiałów sypkich w silosach z wykorzystaniem obrazowania metodami opartymi na promieniowaniu X (tzn. radiografii oraz (micro)tomografii). Oprócz przedstawienia metodologii pomiaru, zostały również opisane metody przetwarzania obrazów, pozwalające na wyznaczenie charakterystycznych parametrów badanych procesów z obrazów wolumetrycznych.&nbsp

    Robust Inside-Outside Segmentation Using Generalized Winding Numbers

    Solid shapes in computer graphics are often represented with boundary descriptions, e.g. triangle meshes, but animation, physicallybased simulation, and geometry processing are more realistic and accurate when explicit volume representations are available. Tetrahedral meshes which exactly contain (interpolate) the input boundary description are desirable but difficult to construct for a large class of input meshes. Character meshes and CAD models are often composed of many connected components with numerous selfintersections, non-manifold pieces, and open boundaries, precluding existing meshing algorithms. We propose an automatic algorithm handling all of these issues, resulting in a compact discretization of the input’s inner volume. We only require reasonably consistent orientation of the input triangle mesh. By generalizing the winding number for arbitrary triangle meshes, we define a function that is a perfect segmentation for watertight input and is well-behaved otherwise. This function guides a graphcut segmentation of a constrained Delaunay tessellation (CDT), providing a minimal description that meets the boundary exactly and may be fed as input to existing tools to achieve element quality. We highlight our robustness on a number of examples and show applications of solving PDEs, volumetric texturing and elastic simulation

    A comparison of hole-filling methods in 3D

    This paper presents a review of the most relevant current techniques that deal with hole-filling in 3D models. Contrary to earlier reports, which approach mesh repairing in a sparse and global manner, the objective of this review is twofold. First, a specific and comprehensive review of hole-filling techniques (as a relevant part in the field of mesh repairing) is carried out. We present a brief summary of each technique with attention paid to its algorithmic essence, main contributions and limitations. Second, a solid comparison between 34 methods is established. To do this, we define 19 possible meaningful features and properties that can be found in a generic hole-filling process. Then, we use these features to assess the virtues and deficiencies of the method and to build comparative tables.     Hacia el modelado 3d de tumores cerebrales mediante endoneurosonografía y redes neuronales

    Las cirugías mínimamente invasivas se han vuelto populares debido a que implican menos riesgos con respecto a las intervenciones tradicionales. En neurocirugía, las tendencias recientes sugieren el uso conjunto de la endoscopia y el ultrasonido, técnica llamada endoneurosonografía (ENS), para la virtualización 3D de las estructuras del cerebro en tiempo real. La información ENS se puede utilizar para generar modelos 3D de los tumores del cerebro durante la cirugía. En este trabajo, presentamos una metodología para el modelado 3D de tumores cerebrales con ENS y redes neuronales. Específicamente, se estudió el uso de mapas auto-organizados (SOM) y de redes neuronales tipo gas (NGN). En comparación con otras técnicas, el modelado 3D usando redes neuronales ofrece ventajas debido a que la morfología del tumor se codifica directamente sobre los pesos sinápticos de la red, no requiere ningún conocimiento a priori y la representación puede ser desarrollada en dos etapas: entrenamiento fuera de línea y adaptación en línea. Se realizan pruebas experimentales con maniquíes médicos de tumores cerebrales. Al final del documento, se presentan los resultados del modelado 3D a partir de una base de datos ENS.Minimally invasive surgeries have become popular because they reduce the typical risks of traditional interventions. In neurosurgery, recent trends suggest the combined use of endoscopy and ultrasound (endoneurosonography or ENS) for 3D virtualization of brain structures in real time. The ENS information can be used to generate 3D models of brain tumors during a surgery. This paper introduces a methodology for 3D modeling of brain tumors using ENS and unsupervised neural networks. The use of self-organizing maps (SOM) and neural gas networks (NGN) is particularly studied. Compared to other techniques, 3D modeling using neural networks offers advantages, since tumor morphology is directly encoded in synaptic weights of the network, no a priori knowledge is required, and the representation can be developed in two stages: off-line training and on-line adaptation. Experimental tests were performed using virtualized phantom brain tumors. At the end of the paper, the results of 3D modeling from an ENS database are presented

    A framework for hull form reverse engineering and geometry integration into numerical simulations

    The thesis presents a ship hull form specific reverse engineering and CAD integration framework. The reverse engineering part proposes three alternative suitable reconstruction approaches namely curves network, direct surface fitting, and triangulated surface reconstruction. The CAD integration part includes surface healing, region identification, and domain preparation strategies which used to adapt the CAD model to downstream application requirements. In general, the developed framework bridges a point cloud and a CAD model obtained from IGES and STL file into downstream applications

    3D Segmentation & Measurement of Macular Holes

    Macular holes are blinding conditions where a hole develops in the central part of retina, resulting in reduced central vision. The prognosis and treatment options are related to a number of variables including the macular hole size and shape. In this work we introduce a method to segment and measure macular holes in three-dimensional (3D) data. High-resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) allows precise imaging of the macular hole geometry in three dimensions, but the measurement of these by human observers is time consuming and prone to high inter- and intra-observer variability, being characteristically measured in 2D rather than 3D. This work introduces several novel techniques to automatically retrieve accurate 3D measurements of the macular hole, including surface area, base area, base diameter, top area, top diameter, height, and minimum diameter. Specifically, it is introducing a multi-scale 3D level set segmentation approach based on a state-of-the-art level set method, and introducing novel curvature-based cutting and 3D measurement procedures. The algorithm is fully automatic, and we validate the extracted measurements both qualitatively and quantitatively, where the results show the method to be robust across a variety of scenarios. A segmentation software package is presented for targeting medical and biological applications, with a high level of visual feedback and several usability enhancements over existing packages. Specifically, it is providing a substantially faster graphics processing unit (GPU) implementation of the local Gaussian distribution fitting (LGDF) energy model, which can segment inhomogeneous objects with poorly defined boundaries as often encountered in biomedical images. It also provides interactive brushes to guide the segmentation process in a semi-automated framework. The speed of implementation allows us to visualise the active surface in real-time with a built-in ray tracer, where users may halt evolution at any timestep to correct implausible segmentation by painting new blocking regions or new seeds. Quantitative and qualitative validation is presented, demonstrating the practical efficacy of the interactive elements for a variety of real-world datasets. The size of macular holes is known to be one of the strongest predictors of surgical success both anatomically and functionally. Furthermore, it is used to guide the choice of treatment, the optimum surgical approach and to predict outcome. Our automated 3D image segmentation algorithm has extracted 3D shape-based macular hole measurements and described the dimensions and morphology. Our approach is able to robustly and accurately measure macular hole dimensions. This thesis is considered as a significant contribution for clinical applications particularly in the field of macular hole segmentation and shape analysis
