Multi-objective evolutionary–fuzzy augmented flight control for an F16 aircraft
In this article, the multi-objective design of a fuzzy logic augmented flight controller for a high performance fighter jet (the Lockheed-Martin F16) is described. A fuzzy logic controller is designed and its membership functions tuned by genetic algorithms in order to design a roll, pitch, and yaw flight controller with enhanced manoeuverability which still retains safety critical operation when combined with a standard inner-loop stabilizing controller. The controller is assessed in terms of pilot effort and thus reduction of pilot fatigue. The controller is incorporated into a six degree of freedom motion base real-time flight simulator, and flight tested by a qualified pilot instructor
CAD enabled trajectory optimization and accurate motion control for repetitive tasks
As machine users generally only define the start
and end point of the movement, a large trajectory optimization potential rises for single axis mechanisms performing repetitive tasks. However, a descriptive mathematical model of the mecha- nism needs to be defined in order to apply existing optimization techniques. This is usually done with complex methods like virtual work or Lagrange equations. In this paper, a generic technique is presented to optimize the design of point-to-point trajectories by extracting position dependent properties with CAD motion simulations. The optimization problem is solved by a genetic algorithm. Nevertheless, the potential savings will only be achieved if the machine is capable of accurately following the optimized trajectory. Therefore, a feedforward motion controller is derived from the generic model allowing to use the controller for various settings and position profiles. Moreover, the theoretical savings are compared with experimental data from a physical set-up. The results quantitatively show that the savings potential is effectively achieved thanks to advanced torque feedforward with a reduction of the maximum torque by 12.6% compared with a standard 1/3-profil
Meta-heuristic algorithms in car engine design: a literature survey
Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system
Constrained Nonlinear Model Predictive Control of an MMA Polymerization Process via Evolutionary Optimization
In this work, a nonlinear model predictive controller is developed for a
batch polymerization process. The physical model of the process is
parameterized along a desired trajectory resulting in a trajectory linearized
piecewise model (a multiple linear model bank) and the parameters are
identified for an experimental polymerization reactor. Then, a multiple model
adaptive predictive controller is designed for thermal trajectory tracking of
the MMA polymerization. The input control signal to the process is constrained
by the maximum thermal power provided by the heaters. The constrained
optimization in the model predictive controller is solved via genetic
algorithms to minimize a DMC cost function in each sampling interval.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 28 reference
Hybrid model predictive control for freeway traffic using discrete speed limit signals
HYCON2 Show day - Traffic modeling, Estimation and Control 13/05/2014 GrenobleIn this paper, two hybrid Model Predictive Control (MPC) approaches for freeway traffic control are proposed considering variable speed limits (VSL) as discrete variables as in current real world implementations. These discrete characteristics of the speed limits values and some necessary constraints for the actual operation of VSL are usually underestimated in the literature, so we propose a way to include them using a macroscopic traffic model within an MPC framework. For obtaining discrete signals, the MPC controller has to solve a highly non-linear optimization problem, including mixed-integer variables. Since solving such a problem is complex and difficult to execute in real-time, we propose some methods to obtain reasonable control actions in a limited computation time. The first two methods (-exhaustive and -genetic discretization) consist of first relaxing the discrete constraints for the VSL inputs; and then, based on this continuous solution and using a genetic or an exhaustive algorithm, to find discrete solutions within a distance of the continuous solution that provide a good performance. The second class of methods split the problem in a continuous optimization for the ramp metering signals and in a discrete optimization for speed limits. The speed limits optimization, which is much more time-consuming than the ramp metering one, is solved by a genetic or an exhaustive algorithm in communication with a non-linear solver for the ramp metering. Hardware-in-the-loop tuning of a feedback controller for a buck converter using a GA
This paper presents a methodology for tuning a PID-based feedback controller for a buck converter using the ITAE controller performance index. The controller parameters are optimized to ensure that a reasonable transient response can be achieved whilst retaining stable operation. Experimental results demonstrate the versatility of the on-line tuning methodology

Intelligent Learning Algorithms for Active Vibration Control
YesThis correspondence presents an investigation into the
comparative performance of an active vibration control (AVC) system
using a number of intelligent learning algorithms. Recursive least square
(RLS), evolutionary genetic algorithms (GAs), general regression neural
network (GRNN), and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS)
algorithms are proposed to develop the mechanisms of an AVC system.
The controller is designed on the basis of optimal vibration suppression
using a plant model. A simulation platform of a flexible beam system
in transverse vibration using a finite difference method is considered to
demonstrate the capabilities of the AVC system using RLS, GAs, GRNN,
and ANFIS. The simulation model of the AVC system is implemented,
tested, and its performance is assessed for the system identification models
using the proposed algorithms. Finally, a comparative performance of the
algorithms in implementing the model of the AVC system is presented and
discussed through a set of experiments
A Review on Energy Consumption Optimization Techniques in IoT Based Smart Building Environments
In recent years, due to the unnecessary wastage of electrical energy in
residential buildings, the requirement of energy optimization and user comfort
has gained vital importance. In the literature, various techniques have been
proposed addressing the energy optimization problem. The goal of each technique
was to maintain a balance between user comfort and energy requirements such
that the user can achieve the desired comfort level with the minimum amount of
energy consumption. Researchers have addressed the issue with the help of
different optimization algorithms and variations in the parameters to reduce
energy consumption. To the best of our knowledge, this problem is not solved
yet due to its challenging nature. The gap in the literature is due to the
advancements in the technology and drawbacks of the optimization algorithms and
the introduction of different new optimization algorithms. Further, many newly
proposed optimization algorithms which have produced better accuracy on the
benchmark instances but have not been applied yet for the optimization of
energy consumption in smart homes. In this paper, we have carried out a
detailed literature review of the techniques used for the optimization of
energy consumption and scheduling in smart homes. The detailed discussion has
been carried out on different factors contributing towards thermal comfort,
visual comfort, and air quality comfort. We have also reviewed the fog and edge
computing techniques used in smart homes
Optimisation of the weighting functions of an H<sub>∞</sub> controller using genetic algorithms and structured genetic algorithms
In this paper the optimisation of the weighting functions for an H<sub>∞</sub> controller using genetic algorithms and structured genetic algorithms is considered. The choice of the weighting functions is one of the key steps in the design of an H<sub>∞</sub> controller. The performance of the controller depends on these weighting functions since poorly chosen weighting functions will provide a poor controller. One approach that can solve this problem is the use of evolutionary techniques to tune the weighting parameters. The paper presents the improved performance of structured genetic algorithms over conventional genetic algorithms and how this technique can assist with the identification of appropriate weighting functions' orders
