S-band antenna phased array communications system
The development of an S-band antenna phased array for spacecraft to spacecraft communication is discussed. The system requirements, antenna array subsystem design, and hardware implementation are examined. It is stated that the phased array approach offers the greatest simplicity and lowest cost. The objectives of the development contract are defined as: (1) design of a medium gain active phased array S-band communications antenna, (2) development and test of a model of a seven element planar array of radiating elements mounted in the appropriate cavity matrix, and (3) development and test of a breadboard transmit/receive microelectronics module
Precision Pointing Control System (PPCS) system design and analysis
The precision pointing control system (PPCS) is an integrated system for precision attitude determination and orientation of gimbaled experiment platforms. The PPCS concept configures the system to perform orientation of up to six independent gimbaled experiment platforms to design goal accuracy of 0.001 degrees, and to operate in conjunction with a three-axis stabilized earth-oriented spacecraft in orbits ranging from low altitude (200-2500 n.m., sun synchronous) to 24 hour geosynchronous, with a design goal life of 3 to 5 years. The system comprises two complementary functions: (1) attitude determination where the attitude of a defined set of body-fixed reference axes is determined relative to a known set of reference axes fixed in inertial space; and (2) pointing control where gimbal orientation is controlled, open-loop (without use of payload error/feedback) with respect to a defined set of body-fixed reference axes to produce pointing to a desired target
NATURAL ALGORITHMS IN DIGITAL FILTER DESIGN
Digital filters are an important part of Digital Signal Processing (DSP), which plays
vital roles within the modern world, but their design is a complex task requiring a great
deal of specialised knowledge. An analysis of this design process is presented, which
identifies opportunities for the application of optimisation.
The Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Simulated Annealing are problem-independent
and increasingly popular optimisation techniques. They do not require detailed prior
knowledge of the nature of a problem, and are unaffected by a discontinuous search
space, unlike traditional methods such as calculus and hill-climbing.
Potential applications of these techniques to the filter design process are discussed,
and presented with practical results. Investigations into the design of Frequency Sampling
(FS) Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filters using a hybrid GA/hill-climber proved
especially successful, improving on published results. An analysis of the search space
for FS filters provided useful information on the performance of the optimisation technique.
The ability of the GA to trade off a filter's performance with respect to several design
criteria simultaneously, without intervention by the designer, is also investigated.
Methods of simplifying the design process by using this technique are presented, together
with an analysis of the difficulty of the non-linear FIR filter design problem from
a GA perspective. This gave an insight into the fundamental nature of the optimisation
problem, and also suggested future improvements.
The results gained from these investigations allowed the framework for a potential
'intelligent' filter design system to be proposed, in which embedded expert knowledge,
Artificial Intelligence techniques and traditional design methods work together. This
could deliver a single tool capable of designing a wide range of filters with minimal
human intervention, and of proposing solutions to incomplete problems. It could also
provide the basis for the development of tools for other areas of DSP system design
A modified low roundoff digital oscillator design
The work of this thesis is to summarize and compares the existing digital oscillator design methods and combine them to form a modified structure for oscillator design. First of all, a combined structure of complex oscillator design is proposed. The structure combines the advantages of low hardware complexity and low roundoff errors. Then based on the suggested complex oscillator structure, some new digital oscillator structures with uniform frequency spacing are suggested. The new structures are also the modified structure of the existing oscillator. By adding power-of-two shift boxes into the modified structure, dynamic range of the output is enlarged and the quantization errors are greatly reduced. The modified oscillators can generate low frequency and low amplitude sinusoid waves with very small phase and amplitude deviation. In order to further reduce the quantization errors, error feedback circuits is applied into the circuit to further reduce the errors

Digital Filters and Signal Processing
Digital filters, together with signal processing, are being employed in the new technologies and information systems, and are implemented in different areas and applications. Digital filters and signal processing are used with no costs and they can be adapted to different cases with great flexibility and reliability. This book presents advanced developments in digital filters and signal process methods covering different cases studies. They present the main essence of the subject, with the principal approaches to the most recent mathematical models that are being employed worldwide
Surrogate time series
Before we apply nonlinear techniques, for example those inspired by chaos
theory, to dynamical phenomena occurring in nature, it is necessary to first
ask if the use of such advanced techniques is justified "by the data". While
many processes in nature seem very unlikely a priori to be linear, the possible
nonlinear nature might not be evident in specific aspects of their dynamics.
The method of surrogate data has become a very popular tool to address such a
question. However, while it was meant to provide a statistically rigorous,
foolproof framework, some limitations and caveats have shown up in its
practical use. In this paper, recent efforts to understand the caveats, avoid
the pitfalls, and to overcome some of the limitations, are reviewed and
augmented by new material. In particular, we will discuss specific as well as
more general approaches to constrained randomisation, providing a full range of
examples. New algorithms will be introduced for unevenly sampled and
multivariate data and for surrogate spike trains. The main limitation, which
lies in the interpretability of the test results, will be illustrated through
instructive case studies. We will also discuss some implementational aspects of
the realisation of these methods in the TISEAN

Realtime image noise reduction FPGA implementation with edge detection
The purpose of this dissertation was to develop and implement, in a Field
Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), a noise reduction algorithm for real-time
sensor acquired images. A Moving Average filter was chosen due to its
fulfillment of a low demanding computational expenditure nature, speed, good
precision and low to medium hardware resources utilization. The technique is
simple to implement, however, if all pixels are indiscriminately filtered, the result
will be a blurry image which is undesirable.
Since human eye is more sensitive to contrasts, a technique was
introduced to preserve sharp contour transitions which, in the author’s opinion,
is the dissertation contribution. Synthetic and real images were tested.
Synthetic, composed both with sharp and soft tone transitions, were generated
with a developed algorithm, while real images were captured with an 8-kbit
(8192 shades) high resolution sensor scaled up to 10 × 103 shades.
A least-squares polynomial data smoothing filter, Savitzky-Golay, was
used as comparison. It can be adjusted using 3 degrees of freedom ─ the
window frame length which varies the filtering relation size between pixels’
neighborhood, the derivative order, which varies the curviness and the
polynomial coefficients which change the adaptability of the curve. Moving
Average filter only permits one degree of freedom, the window frame length.
Tests revealed promising results with 2 and 4ℎ polynomial orders. Higher
qualitative results were achieved with Savitzky-Golay’s better signal
characteristics preservation, especially at high frequencies.
FPGA algorithms were implemented in 64-bit integer registers serving
two purposes: increase precision, hence, reducing the error comparatively as if
it were done in floating-point registers; accommodate the registers’ growing
cumulative multiplications. Results were then compared with MATLAB’s double
precision 64-bit floating-point computations to verify the error difference
between both. Used comparison parameters were Mean Squared Error, Signalto-Noise Ratio and Similarity coefficient.O objetivo desta dissertação foi desenvolver e implementar, em FPGA,
As sintéticas,
compostas por fortes e suaves contrastes foram geradas por um algoritmo
desenvolvido. As reais foram capturadas com um sensor de alta resolução de
8-kbit (8192 tons) e escalonadas a 10 × 103 tons.
