Improving Spectral Efficiency While Reducing PAPR Using Faster-Than-Nyquist Multicarrier Signaling

Multicarrier modulations are widely used in mobile radio applications due to their adaptability to the time-frequency characteristics of the channel, thus enabling low-complexity equalization. However, their intrinsically high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is a major drawback with regard to implementation issues (e.g., power amplification efficiency, regulatory constraints...). In this paper, we confirm that the PAPR can be decreased as the signaling density (i.e., spectral efficiency at fixed constellation size) increases, even in the case where symbols cannot be perfectly reconstructed using a linear system. In such a two-dimensional generalization of faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) systems, PAPR distribution models from the literature are confirmed by simulation results. Furthermore, for a fixed number of subcarriers, we show that a sufficient condition to yield the optimal PAPR distribution at the output of a critically sampled transmitter is to specify pulse shapes as tight frames. Finally, simulation are performed in the more realistic case of an oversampled transmitted signal

The next-generation of wireless local area network systems are being conceptualized with new applications, smart devices and use cases which mandate unprecedented levels of high data rates, spectral efficiency, reliability, low latency and high energy efficiency. The index modulated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM-IM) stands out as the most endearing candidate for physical layer modulation technique which provides a smooth transit to green communications. However, OFDM-IM being a multicarrier technique similar to classical OFDM is also very sensitive to frequency synchronization errors and needs to be addressed on priority. In this article, a novel algorithm is proposed which estimates and corrects the carrier frequency offset at the receiver and the algorithm\u27s performance is compared with two frequency domain variants of OFDM-IM and the classical OFDM under the same channel conditions and the simulation results show that our algorithm is not only capable of meeting the standard requirement of +/-20ppm but can handle higher offsets till +/-30ppm

This paper investigates a radar-communications waveform sharing scenario. Particularly, it addresses the selfinterference phenomenon induced by independent single-point scatterers throughout a low-complexity monostatic OFDM-based radar receiver from a statistical viewpoint. Accordingly, an analytical expression of the post-processing signal-to-interferenceplus-noise-ratio is derived and detection performance is quantified in simulated scenarios for rectangular and non-rectangular pulses. Both metrics suggest that this phenomenon must be further handled

[EN] A universal-filtered multicarrier (UFMC) system that is a generalization of filtered orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) and filter-bank-based multicarrier is being considered as a potential candidate for fifth-generation due to its robustness against intercarrier interference as in cyclic-prefix-based OFDM systems. However, real-time hardware realization of multicarrier systems is limited by a large number of arithmetic units for inverse fast Fourier transform and pulse-shaping filters. In this paper, we aim to propose a low-complexity and reconfigurable architecture for a baseband UFMC transmitter. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed architecture is the first reconfigurable architecture that has the flexibility to choose the number of subcarriers in a subband without any change in hardware resources. In addition, the proposed architecture selects the filter from a group of filters with a single selection line. Moreover, we use a commercially available field-programmable gate array device for real-time testing and analyzing the baseband UFMC signal. From the extensive experiments, we study the occupied bandwidth, main-lobe power, and sidelobe power of the baseband signal with different filters in real-time scenarios. Finally, we measure the quantization error in baseband signal generation for the proposed UFMC transmitter architecture and find comparable with the error bound.Kumar, V.; Mukherjee, M.; Lloret, J. The advancements in wireless communications are the key-enablers of new applications with stringent requirements in low-latency, ultra-reliability, high data rate, high mobility, and massive connectivity. Diverse types of devices, ranging from tiny sensors to vehicles, with different capabilities need to be connected under various channel conditions. Thus, modern connectivity and network techniques at all layers are essential to overcome these challenges. In particular, the physical layer (PHY) transmission is required to achieve certain link reliability, data rate, and latency. In modern digital communications systems, the transmission is performed by means of a digital signal processing module that derives analog hardware. The performance of the analog part is influenced by the quality of the hardware and the baseband signal denoted as waveform. In most of the modern systems such as fifth generation (5G) and WiFi, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is adopted as a favorite waveform due to its low-complexity advantages in terms of signal processing. However, OFDM requires strict requirements on hardware quality. Many devices are equipped with simplified analog hardware to reduce the cost. In this case, OFDM does not work properly as a result of its high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and sensitivity to synchronization errors. To tackle these problems, many waveforms design have been recently proposed in the literature. Some of these designs are modified versions of OFDM or based on conventional single subcarrier. Moreover, multicarrier frameworks, such as generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM), have been proposed to realize varieties of conventional waveforms. Furthermore, recent studies show the potential of using non-conventional waveforms for increasing the link reliability with affordable complexity. Based on that, flexible waveforms and transmission techniques are necessary to adapt the system for different hardware and channel constraints in order to fulfill the applications requirements while optimizing the resources. The objective of this thesis is to provide a holistic view of waveforms and the related multiple access (MA) techniques to enable efficient study and evaluation of different approaches. First, the wireless communications system is reviewed with specific focus on the impact of hardware impairments and the wireless channel on the waveform design. Then, generalized model of waveforms and MA are presented highlighting various special cases. Finally, this work introduces low-complexity architectures for hardware implementation of flexible waveforms. Generalized Spatial Modulation in Large-Scale Multiuser MIMO Systems

Generalized spatial modulation (GSM) uses ntn_t transmit antenna elements but fewer transmit radio frequency (RF) chains, nrfn_{rf}. Spatial modulation (SM) and spatial multiplexing are special cases of GSM with nrf=1n_{rf}=1 and nrf=ntn_{rf}=n_t, respectively. In GSM, in addition to conveying information bits through nrfn_{rf} conventional modulation symbols (for example, QAM), the indices of the nrfn_{rf} active transmit antennas also convey information bits. In this paper, we investigate {\em GSM for large-scale multiuser MIMO communications on the uplink}. Our contributions in this paper include: (ii) an average bit error probability (ABEP) analysis for maximum-likelihood detection in multiuser GSM-MIMO on the uplink, where we derive an upper bound on the ABEP, and (iiii) low-complexity algorithms for GSM-MIMO signal detection and channel estimation at the base station receiver based on message passing. The analytical upper bounds on the ABEP are found to be tight at moderate to high signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). The proposed receiver algorithms are found to scale very well in complexity while achieving near-optimal performance in large dimensions. Simulation results show that, for the same spectral efficiency, multiuser GSM-MIMO can outperform multiuser SM-MIMO as well as conventional multiuser MIMO, by about 2 to 9 dB at a bit error rate of 10310^{-3}. Such SNR gains in GSM-MIMO compared to SM-MIMO and conventional MIMO can be attributed to the fact that, because of a larger number of spatial index bits, GSM-MIMO can use a lower-order QAM alphabet which is more power efficient.Comment: IEEE Trans. on Wireless Communications, accepte

The forthcoming 5G communication system aims to support more services than its predecessor, such as enhanced mobile broadband, machine-type communications and low latency communications, and considers many other application scenarios such as the fragmented spectrum use. This diversity of services with different requirements cannot be supported by conventional OFDM since OFDM configures the entire bandwidth with parameters attending one service in particular. Also, substantial intercarrier interference (ICI) can occur when conventional OFDM is used with asynchronous multiuser multiplexing and this is due to the high out-of-band (OOB) emissions of the subcarriers and the violation of the signal orthogonality constraint. Therefore, to meet the requirements of future 5G wireless applications, the development of an innovative air interface with new capabilities becomes necessary, in particular, a new waveform more spectrally agile than OFDM capable of supporting multiple configurations, suppressing the inter-user interference effectively, and with straightforward integration with the upper layers. This work focuses on two pulse shaping techniques to reduce the OOB emission and improve the in-band and OOB performances of OFDM-based waveforms. Pulse shaping can enable the use of multiple parameterizations within the waveform and abandon the strict paradigms of orthogonality and synchronism with relatively low performance degradation caused by intersymbol interference (ISI) and ICI. The first part addresses a pulse shaping method based on per-subcarrier filtering to reduce both OOB emission in the transmitter and adjacent channel interference (ACI) in the receiver. It can be implemented using window functions and some window formats are presented in this part. The first uses the existing cyclic prefix (CP) of OFDM symbols to smooth abrupt transitions of the signal, thus the large sinc spectral sidelobes caused by the rectangular filters. This guarantees backwards compatibility in systems using conventional cyclic prefixed OFDM (CP-OFDM). The second window format extends the CP length to retain the waveform ability to combat channel delay spread. The effects on performance of ISI and ICI are studied in terms of the signal to interference ratio (SIR) and bit error rate (BER) using LTE waveforms in a multi-user fragmented spectrum scenario. The second part of this work addresses the design and analysis of a filters for flexible spectral containment in subband-based filtering transceivers. This filter, called here semi-equiripple, exhibits better stopband attenuation to reduce the inter-subband interferences than equiripple and windowed truncated sinc filters and also has good impulse response characteristics to reduce ISI. The design is based on the Parks-McClellan algorithm to obtain different stopband decay rates and meet arbitrary spectrum emission masks (SEM) specifications with low in-band distortion. Therefore, it can be useful to achieve low OOB emission and configure subbands with independent parameters since the asynchronous interference is contained by the filters. Three ISI distortions in the filter are studied: symbol spreading related to the filter causality, symbol echoes due to in-band ripples, and ISI amplification due to outlier samples in the tails of its impulse response. The performance of the filter is assessed in terms of the power spectrum density (PSD) and compliance with tight SEMs, modulation error rate (MER) and operation in a multi-service asynchronous scheme using a single waveform. The SIR and the effect of filtering on the modulation accuracy are evaluated using OFDM ISDB-T and LTE waveforms. Flexible hardware structures are also proposed for actual implementations. The results show that these pulse shaping methods enable the waveform to exploit the available spectrum fragments and support multiple services without significant performance penalty, which can allow a more flexible air interfaceMestradoTelecomunicações e TelemáticaMestre em Engenharia ElétricaCAPE

The wireless user’s pressure towards faster communications, no matter whether mobile, nomadic, or fixed positioned, without extra cost is nowadays a reality. To fulfill these demands, a new scheme which combines wireless digital modulation and multiple accesses was proposed in the recent years, namely, Multicarrier-Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA). The Fourier based OFDM uses the complex exponential bases functions and it is replaced by wavelets in order to reduce the level of interference. It is found that the Haar-based wavelets are capable of reducing the ISI and ICI, which are caused by the loss in orthogonality between the carriers. Further performance gains can be made by looking at alternative orthogonal basis functions and finding a better transform rather than Fourier and wavelet transform. In this thesis, there are three proposed models [Model ‘1’ (OFDM based on In-Place Wavelet Transform, Model ‘2’ (MC-CDMA based on IP-WT and Phase Matrix) and Model ‘3’ (MC-CDMA based on Multiwavelet Transform)] were created and then comparison their performances with the traditional models for single user system were compared under different channel characteristics (AWGN channel, flat fading and selective fading). The conclusion of my study as follows, the models (1) was achieved much lower bit error rates than traditional models based FFT. Therefore these models can be considered as an alternative to the conventional MC-CDMA based FFT. The main advantage of using In-Place wavelet transform in the proposed models that it does not require an additional array at each sweep such as in ordered Fast Haar wavelet transform, which makes it simpler for implementation than FFT. The model (2) gave a new algorithm based on In-Place wavelet transform with first level processing multiple by PM was proposed. The model (3) gave much lower bit error than other two models in additional to traditional models
