    Gain-lever lasers in optical subcarrier transmission systems

    This thesis is concerned with the gain-lever effect in quantum well semiconductor lasers with a view to their application in subcarrier multiplexed fibre optical systems. The increased modulation efficiency and reduced noise figure of the gain-lever laser makes it very attractive for microwave optical transmission. However, their possible application to subcarrier multiplexed systems requires a full assessment of the effects of their intrinsic nonlinearity. With this in view, the first part of the study is dedicated to the modelling of the modulation and noise characteristics of the gain-lever laser based on the single-mode rate equations. These equations also provide an adequate basis for the analysis of the laser intrinsic dynamic nonlinearity. The Volterra series method of nonlinear system theory is then applied to develop analytical models that describe the nonlinear distortion. Both intensity and frequency modulation are useful in gain-lever laser transmitters. Therefore analytical models were developed that account for distortion effects of both the intensity and frequency components of the laser light as well as of a nonlinear optical discriminator. The Volterra theory enables the calculation of both the harmonic and intermodulation distortion power. This measure is used to compare different gain-lever laser transmitters to the conventional DFB laser. Finally, the analytic model is used to investigate both dynamic range constraints and the performance of a gain-lever laser transmitter in a fibre radio subcarrier multiplexed system

    High-Performance Isolated Bidirectional DC-DC Converter

    Conversores DC-DC bidireccionais têm vindo a ganhar atenção na área da eletrónica de potência devido ao aumento da necessidade de um fluxo de potência controlado entre dois barramentos DC. Aplicações típicas podem ser facilmente listadas, indo desde unidades de produção de energia renovável até veículos elétricos e híbridos. Estes conversores podem apresentar funcionalidades como elevada densidade energética e performance, assim como isolamento galvânico entre cada porto. Desta forma, a AddVolt requisitou que tal conversor fosse incluído na sua solução de travagem regenerativa. Com esta dissertação, um conversor DC-DC bidireccional e isolado é proposto, sendo que todos os aspetos desde revisão bibliográfica, modelação, design, simulação, implementação, teste e validação são abrangidos. Um conversor Dual-Active Bridge (DAB) de média potência e alta frequência é a topologia escolhida. Após validação de quer a topologia como a malha de controlo desenhada num ambiente computacional, um protótipo experimental é assemblado e testado com sucesso. O isolamento galvânico é garantido e atingido através de um transformador de alta frequência desenhado e enrolado pelo autor.Bidirectional DC-DC converters have been gaining attention in the field of power electronics due to the increasing need of a controlled power flow between two DC buses. Typical applications can be easily listed, ranging from renewable energy production units to electric and hybrid vehicles. Such converters can feature characteristics as high power density and performance as well as isolation between each port. As a result, AddVolt has commissioned that such a converter should be included in its regenerative breaking solution. Within this dissertation, a bidirectional isolated DC-DC converter is proposed, and all aspects from literature review, modelling, design, simulation, implementation, testing and validation are deeply covered. A medium-power high frequency Dual-Active Bridge (DAB) converter is the chosen topology. After validation of both the topology and control structure in a computational environment, an experimental prototype is assembled and successfully tested. Galvanic isolation is granted and achieved by a self-designed and in-house wound high frequency transformer

    La degradación en los convertidores de potencia basados en silicio, enmarcados en sistemas de tracción eléctrica y fuentes de energías renovables, es un tema de estudio de especial interés para aquellas aplicaciones donde los fallos amenazan la seguridad de personas o donde el mantenimiento es particularmente costoso. Motivado por la influencia de los fallos en IGBTs sobre los fallos habituales en los convertidores de potencia comunes, este trabajo utiliza la herramienta software PLECS como marco de trabajo para la simulación de algoritmos de control predictivo basado en modelo con conjunto finito de acciones de control (FCS-MPC) que pretenden -simultáneamente a conseguir el seguimiento eléctrico- extender directa o indirectamente la vida útil de los IGBTs. El trabajo se enfoca principalmente a la simulación en ordenador de los algoritmos controlando un inversor de dos niveles conectado a una carga RL. Además, pretende también introducir la implementación de éstos sobre un microcontrolador para su estudio controlando el inversor simulado en la plataforma PLECS RT Box 1, con el fin último de poder desarrollar validaciones de los controladores basadas en técnicas Hardware-In-the-Loop.Degradation of silicon-based power electronics converters in traction and renewable energy systems is a topic of interest particularly where module failure supposes a safety threat or where maintenance becomes especially expensive. Motivated by the influence of IGBT aging in usual power converters, this work uses the software tool PLECS as framework to simulate Finite Control Set Model Predictive Control (FCSMPC) algorithms that, simultaneously to achieving a certain current tracking, aim to directly or indirectly extend IGBTs’ lifetime. Whilst the work focuses on offline simulation of the algorithms on PLECS, it also targets to pave the way to implement algorithms in a micro-controller and to study how they control a two-level inverter connected to a RL load simulated on a PLECS RT Box 1 platform.     Unified modelling of aerospace systems: a bond graph approach

    Systems Integration is widely accepted as the basis for improving the efficiency and performance of many engineering products. The aim is to build a unified optimised system not a collection of subsystems that are combined in some ad hoc manner. This moves traditional design boundaries and, in so doing, enables a structured evolution from an integrated system concept to an integrated system product. It is recognised that the inherent complexity cannot be handled effectively without mathematical modelling. The problem is not so much the large number of components but rather the very large number of functional interfaces that result. The costs involved are high and, if the claims of improved efficiency and performance are to be affordable (or even achievable), predictive modelling and analysis will play a major role in reducing risk. A modelling framework is required which can support integrated system development from concept through to certification. This means building a 'system' inside a computer and demonstrating the feasibility of an entire development cycle. The objective is to provide complete coverage of system functionality so as to gain confidence in the design before becoming locked into a full development programme with associated capital investment and contractual arrangements. With these points in mind the purpose of this thesis is threefold. First, to demonstrate the application of bond graphs as a unified modelling framework for aerospace systems. Second, to review the main principles involved with the modelling of engineering systems and to justify the selection of the bond graph notation as a suitable means of representing the power flow (i.e. the dynamics) of physical systems. Third, to present an exposition of the bond graph method and to evolve it into a versatile notation for integrated systems. The originality of the work is based on the recognition that systems integration is a relatively new field of interest without a mature body of academic literature or reported research. Apparently, there is no open literature on the modelling of complete air vehicles plus their embedded vehicle systems which deals with issues of integrated dynamics and control. To this end, bond graph concepts need to be developed and extended in new direction in order to facilitate an intuitive approach to the modelling of integrated systems

    Nature-inspired algorithms for solving some hard numerical problems

    Optimisation is a branch of mathematics that was developed to find the optimal solutions, among all the possible ones, for a given problem. Applications of optimisation techniques are currently employed in engineering, computing, and industrial problems. Therefore, optimisation is a very active research area, leading to the publication of a large number of methods to solve specific problems to its optimality. This dissertation focuses on the adaptation of two nature inspired algorithms that, based on optimisation techniques, are able to compute approximations for zeros of polynomials and roots of non-linear equations and systems of non-linear equations. Although many iterative methods for finding all the roots of a given function already exist, they usually require: (a) repeated deflations, that can lead to very inaccurate results due to the problem of accumulating rounding errors, (b) good initial approximations to the roots for the algorithm converge, or (c) the computation of first or second order derivatives, which besides being computationally intensive, it is not always possible. The drawbacks previously mentioned served as motivation for the use of Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) for root-finding, since they are known, respectively, for their ability to explore high-dimensional spaces (not requiring good initial approximations) and for their capability to model complex problems. Besides that, both methods do not need repeated deflations, nor derivative information. The algorithms were described throughout this document and tested using a test suite of hard numerical problems in science and engineering. Results, in turn, were compared with several results available on the literature and with the well-known Durand–Kerner method, depicting that both algorithms are effective to solve the numerical problems considered.A Optimização é um ramo da matemática desenvolvido para encontrar as soluções óptimas, de entre todas as possíveis, para um determinado problema. Actualmente, são várias as técnicas de optimização aplicadas a problemas de engenharia, de informática e da indústria. Dada a grande panóplia de aplicações, existem inúmeros trabalhos publicados que propõem métodos para resolver, de forma óptima, problemas específicos. Esta dissertação foca-se na adaptação de dois algoritmos inspirados na natureza que, tendo como base técnicas de optimização, são capazes de calcular aproximações para zeros de polinómios e raízes de equações não lineares e sistemas de equações não lineares. Embora já existam muitos métodos iterativos para encontrar todas as raízes ou zeros de uma função, eles usualmente exigem: (a) deflações repetidas, que podem levar a resultados muito inexactos, devido ao problema da acumulação de erros de arredondamento a cada iteração; (b) boas aproximações iniciais para as raízes para o algoritmo convergir, ou (c) o cálculo de derivadas de primeira ou de segunda ordem que, além de ser computacionalmente intensivo, para muitas funções é impossível de se calcular. Estas desvantagens motivaram o uso da Optimização por Enxame de Partículas (PSO) e de Redes Neurais Artificiais (RNAs) para o cálculo de raízes. Estas técnicas são conhecidas, respectivamente, pela sua capacidade de explorar espaços de dimensão superior (não exigindo boas aproximações iniciais) e pela sua capacidade de modelar problemas complexos. Além disto, tais técnicas não necessitam de deflações repetidas, nem do cálculo de derivadas. Ao longo deste documento, os algoritmos são descritos e testados, usando um conjunto de problemas numéricos com aplicações nas ciências e na engenharia. Os resultados foram comparados com outros disponíveis na literatura e com o método de Durand–Kerner, e sugerem que ambos os algoritmos são capazes de resolver os problemas numéricos considerados

    Predictive cognition in dementia: the case of music

    The clinical complexity and pathological diversity of neurodegenerative diseases impose immense challenges for diagnosis and the design of rational interventions. To address these challenges, there is a need to identify new paradigms and biomarkers that capture shared pathophysiological processes and can be applied across a range of diseases. One core paradigm of brain function is predictive coding: the processes by which the brain establishes predictions and uses them to minimise prediction errors represented as the difference between predictions and actual sensory inputs. The processes involved in processing unexpected events and responding appropriately are vulnerable in common dementias but difficult to characterise. In my PhD work, I have exploited key properties of music – its universality, ecological relevance and structural regularity – to model and assess predictive cognition in patients representing major syndromes of frontotemporal dementia – non-fluent variant PPA (nfvPPA), semantic-variant PPA (svPPA) and behavioural-variant FTD (bvFTD) - and Alzheimer’s disease relative to healthy older individuals. In my first experiment, I presented patients with well-known melodies containing no deviants or one of three types of deviant - acoustic (white-noise burst), syntactic (key-violating pitch change) or semantic (key-preserving pitch change). I assessed accuracy detecting melodic deviants and simultaneously-recorded pupillary responses to these deviants. I used voxel-based morphometry to define neuroanatomical substrates for the behavioural and autonomic processing of these different types of deviants, and identified a posterior temporo-parietal network for detection of basic acoustic deviants and a more anterior fronto-temporo-striatal network for detection of syntactic pitch deviants. In my second chapter, I investigated the ability of patients to track the statistical structure of the same musical stimuli, using a computational model of the information dynamics of music to calculate the information-content of deviants (unexpectedness) and entropy of melodies (uncertainty). I related these information-theoretic metrics to performance for detection of deviants and to ‘evoked’ and ‘integrative’ pupil reactivity to deviants and melodies respectively and found neuroanatomical correlates in bilateral dorsal and ventral striatum, hippocampus, superior temporal gyri, right temporal pole and left inferior frontal gyrus. Together, chapters 3 and 4 revealed new hypotheses about the way FTD and AD pathologies disrupt the integration of predictive errors with predictions: a retained ability of AD patients to detect deviants at all levels of the hierarchy with a preserved autonomic sensitivity to information-theoretic properties of musical stimuli; a generalized impairment of surprise detection and statistical tracking of musical information at both a cognitive and autonomic levels for svPPA patients underlying a diminished precision of predictions; the exact mirror profile of svPPA patients in nfvPPA patients with an abnormally high rate of false-alarms with up-regulated pupillary reactivity to deviants, interpreted as over-precise or inflexible predictions accompanied with normal cognitive and autonomic probabilistic tracking of information; an impaired behavioural and autonomic reactivity to unexpected events with a retained reactivity to environmental uncertainty in bvFTD patients. Chapters 5 and 6 assessed the status of reward prediction error processing and updating via actions in bvFTD. I created pleasant and aversive musical stimuli by manipulating chord progressions and used a classic reinforcement-learning paradigm which asked participants to choose the visual cue with the highest probability of obtaining a musical ‘reward’. bvFTD patients showed reduced sensitivity to the consequence of an action and lower learning rate in response to aversive stimuli compared to reward. These results correlated with neuroanatomical substrates in ventral and dorsal attention networks, dorsal striatum, parahippocampal gyrus and temporo-parietal junction. Deficits were governed by the level of environmental uncertainty with normal learning dynamics in a structured and binarized environment but exacerbated deficits in noisier environments. Impaired choice accuracy in noisy environments correlated with measures of ritualistic and compulsive behavioural changes and abnormally reduced learning dynamics correlated with behavioural changes related to empathy and theory-of-mind. Together, these experiments represent the most comprehensive attempt to date to define the way neurodegenerative pathologies disrupts the perceptual, behavioural and physiological encoding of unexpected events in predictive coding terms

    Active vibration control of a flexible robot link using piezoelectric actuators

    Nuisance vibrations are a concern throughout the engineering realm, and many re-searchers are dedicated to finding a solution to attenuate them. This research primarily focusses upon the suppression of vibrations in a robot system, with the control system being designed so that it is both affordable and lightweight. Such constraints aim to provide a solution that may be utilised in a variety of applications. The utilisation of piezoelectric elements as both actuators and sensors provides several advantages in that they are lightweight, easily integrated into an existing system and have a good force to weight ratio when used as actuators. To read and control these elements a single board computer was employed, in acknowledgement of the constraining parameters of the design. The amalgamation of vibration control and robotics has lent to the re-search being conducted with separate objectives set, isolating certain elements of the overall system design for validation. Ultimately, these separate investigations progress to the integration of the robot and control systems prior to further research concerning nonlinear vibrations, dynamic control and the discrete-time domain modelling of the system.This research first investigates the viability of the chosen components as a vibration attenuation solution. In addition, analytical models of the system have been created, for two types of sensors to determine the most effective; an inertial measurement unit and a collocated pair of piezoelectric sensors. These models are based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and aim to validate the control theory through a comparison of the experimental data. These experiments isolate the vibration problem from a robot system through the investigation of the control of a long slender beam envisioned as a robot manipulator link, but excited using a shaker platform in a sinusoidal manner. An observation of the theory related to the voltage produced by the piezoelectric elements, suggests that even with the application of only proportional control by the system, the controlled output would have components indicative of both proportional and derivative control. This observation and the underlying theory are further analysed within this research.The next objectives are to compare the performance of the control system developed in this research which utilises a Raspberry Pi 3B+ [1] with one that employs a dSPACE MicroLabBox [2], and to determine the suitability of the former for use with robot sys-tems. With the former ensuring that the constraints placed on the design, those which influenced the selection of the components, does not conclude to the dSPACE Micro-LabBox system being overtly preferable. The latter investigates both the impact of the system’s inclusion on the functionality of the system and the system’s perform-ance with respect to the intended application. The KUKA LBR iiwa 7 R800 [3] robot manipulator is utilised to satisfy this objective, wherein the link is mounted on the end effector of the manipulator acting as an eighth link. The final investigation in this research pertains to the attenuation of nonlinear vibrations experienced by a robot manipulator link. Additional components were added to the link to induce a geometric nonlinearity in the system. An analytical model of the amended system was created to validate the theory through comparison with experimental results. The control system was employed for multiple cases to ascertain the level of its performance with regards to the suppression of nonlinear vibrations
