    Investigating GNSS multipath effects induced by co-located Radar Corner Reflectors

    Abstract Radar Corner Reflectors (CR) are increasingly used as reference targets for land surface deformation measurements with the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique. When co-located with ground-based Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) infrastructure, InSAR observations at CR can be used to integrate relative measurements of surface deformation into absolute reference frames defined by GNSS. However, CR are also a potential source of GNSS multipath effects and may therefore have a detrimental effect on the GNSS observations. In this study, we compare daily GNSS coordinate time series and 30-second signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) observations for periods before and after CR deployment at a GNSS site. We find that neither the site coordinates nor the SNR values are significantly affected by the CR deployment, with average changes being within 0.1 mm for site coordinates and within 1 % for SNR values. Furthermore, we generate empirical site models by spatially stacking GNSS observation residuals to visualise and compare the spatial pattern in the surroundings of GNSS sites. The resulting stacking maps indicate oscillating patterns at elevation angles above 60 degrees which can be attributed to the CR deployed at the analysed sites. The effect depends on the GNSS antenna used at a site with the magnitude of multipath patterns being around three times smaller for a high-quality choke ring antenna compared to a ground plane antenna without choke rings. In general, the CR-induced multipath is small compared to multipath effects at other GNSS sites located in a different environment (e. g. mounted on a building)

    Satellitensignale unterliegen auf ihrem Weg von der Satelliten- zur Empfangsantenne einer Vielzahl an Einflüssen die zu Abweichungen führen. Heutzutage stellen in vielen Anwendungsbereichen insbesondere die stationsspezifischen Anteile, welche sich in Mehrwegeeffekte aus dem Fernfeld, NLOS-Empfang und Signalbeugung, den Einfluss der Satellitengeometrie und Antennennahfeldeffekte untergliedern lassen, einen der genauigkeitsbegrenzenden Faktoren in der satellitengestützten Positionsbestimmung dar. Dies ist dadurch begründet, dass durch die Abhängigkeit von der individuell vorliegenden Antennenumgebung eine Minimierung der Einflüsse erheblich erschwert wird und etablierte Strategien, wie beispielsweise die Differenzbildung in relativen Positionierungsansätzen, in der Regel nicht anwendbar sind. Obwohl diese Effekte bereits seit den frühesten Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der satellitengestützten Positionsbestimmung untersucht wurden, ist eine vollumfängliche Lösungsstrategie auch in der heutigen Zeit noch nicht verfügbar. Daher hat diese Thematik nicht an Relevanz verloren und es besteht noch immer der Bedarf an weiteren Untersuchungen zur Vertiefung des Verständnisses und zur Erweiterung des Portfolios an verfügbaren Minimierungsansätzen. In dieser Arbeit werden die vier unterschiedlichen Effekte vor dem Hintergrund der hochpräzisen Positionsbestimmung in statischen und kinematischen GNSS-Anwendungen adressiert. Der wesentliche Fokus der Untersuchungen liegt hierbei auf der Detektion und Elimination betroffener Satellitensignale durch die Einbindung detaillierter Umgebungsmodelle aus terrestrischen Messverfahren. Auf Basis dieser methodischen und empirischen Analysen lassen sich für die einzelnen Effekte vier Hauptaspekte herausstellen: (1) Da Antennennahfeldeffekte primär den Messsensor selbst beeinflussen und folglich die angestrebte Detektion und Elimination zur Minimierung nicht geeignet ist, wird alternativ die Minimierung des Einflusses durch spezielle Antennenaufbauten empirisch analysiert. Daraus resultierend werden mit exakt identischen Antennenaufbauten erreichbare Genauigkeiten im Submillimeterbereich nachgewiesen. (2) Der Einfluss auf die Positionsgenauigkeit der potentiell durch eine Signalelimination hervorgerufenen Verschlechterung der Satellitengeometrie kann durch Simulationen generischer Abschattungsszenarien als unkritisch identifiziert werden. Darüber hinaus wird eine Methode zur Integration der Qualität der Satellitengeometrie in die Wegpunktplanung von UAVs entwickelt, welche sowohl in der Planungsphase, als auch während des UAV-Fluges eine Anpassung und Optimierung der Flugroute ermöglicht. (3) Auf Basis mittels terrestrischer Laserscanner erzeugter Punktwolken wird eine Methode zur Erzeugung von Elevationsmasken entwickelt, welche adaptiv gegenüber der vorliegenden Antennenumgebung sind und eine effektive Detektion und Elimination von Satellitensignalen erlauben, die NLOS-Empfang oder Signalbeugung unterliegen. Diese Minimierungsstrategie ist sowohl in statischen, als auch kinematischen Anwendungen einsetzbar und ermöglicht bei zusätzlicher Einbindung von Fresnel Zonen auch die Berücksichtigung der Ausbreitungseigenschaften elektromagnetischer Wellen. (4) Als vorbereitender Schritt für die Entwicklung von Methoden zur Detektion und Eliminierung von Fernfeld-Mehrwegeeffekten werden die Voraussetzungen für die Entstehung der Effekte untersucht. Durch Vergleich simulierter und beobachteter SNR-Zeitreihen und der Berücksichtigung von Fresnel Zonen kann eine Überlappung von 50% zwischen Fresnel-Zone und Reflektorfläche als bereits ausreichend für eine potentielle Mehrwegebelastung identifiziert werden. In der Gesamtbetrachtung liefern die in dieser Arbeit gewonnenen Erkenntnisse und entwickelten Methoden einen relevanten Beitrag zu dem übergeordneten Ziel einer ganzheitlichen Minimierung stationsspezifischer Abweichungen und ermöglichen so eine signifikante Verbesserung der Positionsgenauigkeit unter schwierigen GNSS-Bedingungen. Darüber hinaus nimmt diese Arbeit den in den letzten Jahren forcierten Trend von einer punktweisen zu einer flächenhaften Objekterfassung an, indem das Potenzial einer detaillierten und effizienten Erfassung der Antennenumgebung mittels terrestrischer Laserscanner zur Minimierung und Analyse stationsspezifischer Abweichungen bei der satellitengestützten Positionsbestimmung aufzeigt und genutzt wird.Satellite signals are subject to various error sources on their way from the satellite to the receiving antenna. Nowadays, in many fields of application, the site-dependent parts, which can be separated into far-field multipath, NLOS reception and signal diffraction, the influence of the satellite geometry and antenna near-field effects, are one of the accuracy limiting factors in satellite-based positioning. This is due to the fact that the dependence on the individual antenna environment considerably impedes a minimization of the influences and established strategies, such as double-differencing in relative positioning approaches, are generally not applicable. Although these effects have been subject to scientific research since the earliest developments in the field of satellite-based positioning, an all-embracing solution is still lacking. Therefore, this topic has not lost its relevance and there is still a need for further investigations to deepen the understanding and expanding the portfolio of available mitigation techniques. In this dissertation, the four different effects are addressed against the background of high-precision static and kinematic GNSS applications. In this context, the main focus of the investigations is on the detection and exclusion of affected satellite signals, by integrating detailed environment models derived from terrestrial measurements. Based on these methodological and empirical analyses, four main aspects can be highlighted for the different effects: (1) Since antenna near-field effects primarily affect the measuring sensor itself, and thus, the striven detection and exclusion for mitigation is not applicable in this case, alternatively the mitigation of the influence by special antenna setups is empirically analyzed. As a result, achievable accuracies in the sub-millimeter range can be demonstrated using exactly identical antenna setups. (2) By simulating generic obstruction scenarios, the influence on the positional accuracy of the deterioration of the satellite geometry, potentially caused by an elimination of satellite signals, can be identified as uncritical. Furthermore, a method for integrating measures for the quality of the satellite geometry in the waypoint planning of UAVs is developed, which enables the adaption and optimization of the flight route in the planning phase, as well as during the UAV flight. (3) Based on point clouds of terrestrial laser scanners, a method for the determination of elevation masks that are adaptive to the present antenna environment is developed, which enables an effective detection and exclusion of signals that are subject to NLOS reception or signal diffraction. This mitigation strategy can be applied to static and kinematic GNSS applications and by additionally integrating Fresnel zones, also the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves are considered. (4) As a preparatory step for the development of methods for detecting and excluding far-field multipath, the prerequisites for the occurrence of the effect are investigated. By comparison of simulated and observed SNR time series and by considering Fresnel zones, an overlap of 50% between Fresnel zone and reflecting surface can be identified as already being sufficient for potential far-field multipath influences. In the overall view, the findings and methods developed in this dissertation represent a relevant contribution to the superordinate goal of a holistic mitigation of site-dependent effects, and thus, enable a significant improvement of the positional accuracy under difficult GNSS conditions. In addition, this thesis adopts the currently forced trend from a pointwise to an area-based object acquisition by revealing and exploiting the potential of a detailed and efficient acquisition of the antenna environment by terrestrial laser scanners for mitigating and analyzing site-dependent effects in satellite based positioning applications

    First results of a GNSS-R experiment from a stratospheric balloon over boreal forests

    The empirical results of a global navigation satellite systems reflectometry (GNSS-R) experiment onboard the Balloon EXperiments for University Students (BEXUS) 17 stratospheric balloon performed north of Sweden over boreal forests show that the power of the reflected signals is nearly independent of the platform height for a high coherent integration time T-c = 20 ms. This experimental evidence shows a strong coherent component in the forward scattered signal, as compared with the incoherent component, that allows to be tracked. The bistatic coherent reflectivity is also evaluated as a function of the elevation angle, showing a decrease of similar to 6 dB when the elevation angle increases from 35. to 70 degrees. The received power presents a clearly multimodal behavior, which also suggests that the coherent scattering component may be taking place in different forest elements, i.e., soil, canopy, and through multiple reflections canopy-soil and soil-trunk. This experiment has provided the first GNSS-R data set over boreal forests. The evaluation of these results can be useful for the feasibility study of this technique to perform biomass monitoring that is a key factor to analyze the carbon cycle.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Estimativa da umidade do solo por refletometria GNSS : uma revisão conceitual

    Soil moisture monitoring enables efficient management and use of water resources, having great importance for several purposes, such as: monitoring of risk areas; delimitation of areas susceptible to flooding; geotechnical activities; and in agriculture development. GNSS Reflectometry (GNSS-R) is a scientific and technological development that allows one to perform proximal or remote sensing, depending on the antenna height concerning the surface, by means of navigation satellites. This method exploits GNSS signals indirectly reaching a receiver antenna after they are reflected on the surrounding surfaces. In this method, direct and indirect GNSS signals that reach the receiving antenna are exploited, after reflection on the surfaces existing around the antenna. The combination of these two signals causes the multipath effect, which affects GNSS observable and deteriorates positioning. On the other hand, when interacting with these reflecting surfaces one can estimate their properties. One of the main advantages of GNSS-R, when compared with the conventional methods, is the intermediate coverage area, as well as, the use of the well-defined structure of GNSS systems that guarantee appropriate temporal resolution. The scope of this paper is to present a conceptual review of GNSS-R applied to soil moisture monitoring.O monitoramento da umidade do solo possibilita o manejo e uso eficiente de recursos hídricos, sendo uma atividade importante em diversas áreas, tais como: no monitoramento de áreas de risco; delimitação de áreas suscetíveis a enchentes; atividades da geotecnia; e na agricultura. A Refletometria GNSS (GNSS-R) é um desenvolvimento científico e tecnológico que permite realizar sensoriamento remoto ou proximal, a depender da altura da antena em relação à superfície, com satélites de navegação. Neste método, explora-se os sinais GNSS que chegam à antena receptora de maneira direta e indireta, após reflexão nas superfícies existentes no entorno da antena. A combinação destes dois sinais ocasiona o efeito de multicaminho, que afeta as observáveis GNSS e deteriora o posicionamento. Por outro lado, ao interagir com estas superfícies, o sinal indireto permite estimar atributos acerca destas superfícies, como por exemplo a umidade do solo. Uma das principais vantagens em relação aos métodos convencionais reside no fato do GNSS-R proporcionar uma área de abrangência intermediária e o uso da estrutura bem estabelecida dos satélites GNSS, que garantem resolução temporal apropriada.     Characterization of the Multipath Environment of Ionospheric Scintillation Receivers

    Includes bibliographical referencesGlobal Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are used to provide information on position, time and velocity all over the world at any time of the day. Currently there are four operational GNSS and one of them is GPS (Global Positioning System) that is developed and maintained by U.S Department of Defence (DoD), which is widely used and accessible all over the world. The accuracy of the output or even the availability of the navigation system depends on current space weather conditions, which can cause random fluctuations of the phase and amplitude of the received signal, called scintillation. Interference of GNSS signals that are reflected and refracted from stationary objects on the ground, with signals that travel along a direct path via the ionosphere to the antenna, cause errors in the measured amplitude and phase. These errors are known as multipath errors and can lead to cycle slip and loss of lock on the satellite or degradation in the accuracy of position determination. High elevation cut off angles used for filtering GNSS signals, usually 15-30°, can reduce non-ionospheric interference due to multipath signals coming from the horizon. Since a fixed-elevation threshold does not take into consideration the surrounding physical environment of each GPS station, it can result in a significant loss of valuable data. Alternatively, if the fixed-elevation threshold is not high enough we run the risk of including multipath data in the analysis. In this project we characterized the multipath environment of the GPS Ionospheric Scintillation and TEC (Total Electron Content) Monitor (GISTM) receivers installed by SANSA (South African National Space Agency) at Gough Island (40:34oS and 9:88° W), Marion Island (46:87° S and 37:86° E), Hermanus (34:42° S and19:22° E) and SANAE IV (71:73° S and 2:2° W) by plotting azimuth-elevation maps of scintillation indices averaged over one year. The azimuth-elevation maps were used to identify objects that regularly scatter signals and cause high scintillation resulting from multipath effects. After identifying the multipath area from the azimuth-elevation map, an azimuth-dependent elevation threshold was developed using the MATLAB curve fitting tool. Using this method we are able to reduce the multi-path errors without losing important data. Using the azimuth-dependent elevation threshold typically gives 5 to 28% more useful data than using a 20° fixed-elevation threshold

    An open‑source low‑cost sensor for SNR‑based GNSS reflectometry : design and long‑term validation towards sea‑level altimetry

    Monitoring sea level is critical due to climate change observed over the years. Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) has been widely demonstrated for coastal sea-level monitoring. The use of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) observations from ground-based stations has been especially productive for altimetry applications. SNR records an interference pattern whose oscillation frequency allows retrieving the unknown reflector height. Here we report the development and validation of a complete hardware and software system for SNR-based GNSS-R. We make it available as open source based on the Arduino platform. It costs about US$200 (including solar power supply) and requires minimal assembly of commercial off-the-shelf components. As an initial validation towards applications in coastal regions, we have evaluated the system over approximately 1 year by the Guaíba Lake in Brazil. We have compared water-level altimetry retrievals with independent measurements from a co-located radar tide gauge (within 10 m). The GNSS-R device ran practically uninterruptedly, while the reference radar gauge suffered two malfunctioning periods, resulting in gaps lasting for 44 and 38 days. The stability of GNSS-R altimetry results enabled the detection of miscalibration steps (10 cm and 15 cm) inadvertently introduced in the radar gauge after it underwent maintenance. Excluding the radar gaps and its malfunctioning periods (reducing the time series duration from 317 to 147 days), we have found a correlation of 0.989 and RMSE of 2.9 cm in daily means. To foster open science and lower the barriers for entry in SNR-based GNSS-R research and applications, we make a complete bill of materials and build tutorials freely available on the Internet so that interested researchers can replicate the system

    Evaluation of the Multipath Environment Using Electromagnetic-Absorbing Materials at Continuous GNSS Stations

    o date, no universal modelling technique is available to mitigate the effect of site-specific multipaths in high-precision global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data processing. Multipaths affect both carrier-phase and code/pseudorange measurements, and the errors can propagate and cause position biases. This paper presents the use of an Eccosorb AN-W-79 microwave-absorbing material mounted around a GNSS antenna that reflects less than −17 dB of normal incident energy above a frequency of 600 MHz. To verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the Eccosorb, we installed two close stations by continuously operating multi-GNSS (BeiDou, GLONASS, Galileo and GPS) in a challenging location. One station is equipped with the Eccosorb AN-W-79, covering a square area of 3.35 m2 around the antenna, and the second station operates without it. The standard deviation reductions from single point positioning estimates are significant for all the individual GNSS solutions for the station equipped with microwave-absorbing material. The reductions are as follows: for GPS, between 15% and 23%; for Galileo, between 22% and 45%; for GLONASS, 22%; and for BeiDou, 4%. Furthermore, we assess the influence of multipaths by analysing the linear combinations of code and carrier phase measurements for various GNSS frequencies. The Galileo code multipath shows a reduction of more than 60% for the station with microwave-absorbing material. For GLONASS, particularly for the GLOM3X and GLOM1P code multipath combinations, the reduction reaches 50%, depending on the observation code types. For BeiDou, the reduction is more than 30%, and for GPS, it reaches between 20% and 40%. The Eccosorb AN-W-79 microwave-absorbing material shows convincing results in reducing the code multipath noise level. Again, using microwave-absorbing material leads to an improvement between 15% and 60% in carrier phase cycle slips. The carrier-phase multipath contents on the post-fit residuals from the processed GNSS solutions show a relative RMS reduction of 13% for Galileo and 9% for GLONASS and GPS when using the microwave-absorbing material. This study also presents power spectral contents from residual signal-to-noise ratio time series using Morlet wavelet transformation. The power spectra from the antenna with the Eccosorb AN-W-79 have the smallest magnitude, demonstrating the capacity of microwave-absorbing materials to lessen the multipath influence while not eliminating it

    Robust Positioning in the Presence of Multipath and NLOS GNSS Signals

    GNSS signals can be blocked and reflected by nearby objects, such as buildings, walls, and vehicles. They can also be reflected by the ground and by water. These effects are the dominant source of GNSS positioning errors in dense urban environments, though they can have an impact almost anywhere. Non- line-of-sight (NLOS) reception occurs when the direct path from the transmitter to the receiver is blocked and signals are received only via a reflected path. Multipath interference occurs, as the name suggests, when a signal is received via multiple paths. This can be via the direct path and one or more reflected paths, or it can be via multiple reflected paths. As their error characteristics are different, NLOS and multipath interference typically require different mitigation techniques, though some techniques are applicable to both. Antenna design and advanced receiver signal processing techniques can substantially reduce multipath errors. Unless an antenna array is used, NLOS reception has to be detected using the receiver's ranging and carrier-power-to-noise-density ratio (C/N0) measurements and mitigated within the positioning algorithm. Some NLOS mitigation techniques can also be used to combat severe multipath interference. Multipath interference, but not NLOS reception, can also be mitigated by comparing or combining code and carrier measurements, comparing ranging and C/N0 measurements from signals on different frequencies, and analyzing the time evolution of the ranging and C/N0 measurements

    Information retrieval from spaceborne GNSS Reflectometry observations using physics- and learning-based techniques

    This dissertation proposes a learning-based, physics-aware soil moisture (SM) retrieval algorithm for NASA’s Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission. The proposed methodology has been built upon the literature review, analyses, and findings from a number of published studies throughout the dissertation research. Namely, a Sig- nals of Opportunity Coherent Bistatic scattering model (SCoBi) has been first developed at MSU and then its simulator has been open-sourced. Simulated GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) analyses have been conducted by using SCoBi. Significant findings have been noted such that (1) Although the dominance of either the coherent reflections or incoher- ent scattering over land is a debate, we demonstrated that coherent reflections are stronger for flat and smooth surfaces covered by low-to-moderate vegetation canopy; (2) The influ- ence of several land geophysical parameters such as SM, vegetation water content (VWC), and surface roughness on the bistatic reflectivity was quantified, the dynamic ranges of reflectivity changes due to SM and VWC are much higher than the changes due to the surface roughness. Such findings of these analyses, combined with a comprehensive lit- erature survey, have led to the present inversion algorithm: Physics- and learning-based retrieval of soil moisture information from space-borne GNSS-R measurements that are taken by NASA’s CYGNSS mission. The study is the first work that proposes a machine learning-based, non-parametric, and non-linear regression algorithm for CYGNSS-based soil moisture estimation. The results over point-scale soil moisture observations demon- strate promising performance for applicability to large scales. Potential future work will be extension of the methodology to global scales by training the model with larger and diverse data sets
