    Get PDF
In this paper, a novel active control approach is designed for surge instability in the compressor system using the finite-time fuzzy sliding mode scheme. The primary novelty of this study lies in the development of a finite-time fuzzy sliding mode control for the surge instability in a compressor system in the presence of disturbance and uncertainty in the characteristic curve of the compressor and also throttle valve. To ensure the stability of the closed-loop system in Lyapunov\u27s concept, a finite time active control method is proposed based on fuzzy estimation method and robust adaptive and sliding mode methods. Achieving finite time stability and rapid elimination of deep surge instability occurs through a fast sliding mode design, while fuzzy and adaptive techniques are used to estimate uncertainty and nonlinear terms, as well as to obtain optimal estimation weights. The simulation results in MATLAB environment and comparison show that the suggested method provides better quality control in terms of surge suppression, robustness, and overcoming uncertainty and disturbance effects

The paper proposes a robust faults detection and forecasting approach for a centrifugal gas compressor system, the mechanism of this approach used the Kalman filter to estimate and filtering the unmeasured states of the studied system based on signals data of the inputs and the outputs that have been collected experimentally on site. The intelligent faults detection expert system is designed based on the interval type-2 fuzzy logic. The present work is achieved by an important task which is the prediction of the remaining time of the system under study to reach the danger and/or the failure stage based on the Auto-regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) model, where the objective within the industrial application is to set the maintenance schedules in precisely time. The obtained results prove the performance of the proposed faults diagnosis and detection approach which can be used in several heavy industrial systemsPeer ReviewedPostprint (published version

ABSTRACT The present paper applies fuzzy logic technique to predict the performance map of an axial compressor. This technique relies on employing the information of a data curve in concert with the information at the design point. Further, the learning capability of ANN technique is integrated to the potential of fuzzy logic. A comparison of the predicted results with experimental data reveals a very good agreement. The proposed technique has not only the capability to model the nonlinear surge line as well as the kink in a classical compressor performance map but also it can be used as an alternative tool to foresee the effect of modification of design variables, as well as to guide the design optimization procedure in a short time frame

Variable Geometry Turbocharger Technologies for Exhaust Energy Recovery and Boosting-A Review

    Get PDF
As emissions regulations become increasingly demanding, higher power density engine (downsized/downspeeded and increasingly right-sized) requirements are driving the development of turbocharging systems. Variable geometry turbocharging (VGT) at its most basic level is the first step up from standard fixed geometry turbocharger systems. Currently, VGTs offer significant alternative options or complementarity vis-Ă -vis more advanced turbocharging options. This review details the range of prominent variable geometry technologies that are commercially available or openly under development, for both turbines and compressors and discusses the relative merits of each. Along with prominent diesel-engine boosting systems, attention is given to the control schemes employed and the actuation systems required to operate variable geometry devices, and the specific challenges associated with turbines designed for gasoline engines

Compressor maintenance is vital in oil and gas industry because it is an important equipment that runs continuously. Among all of the deterioration mechanisms, fouling is found to be the most common in oil and gas industry and it is relatively easier to be analyzed. Currently, plant engineers face difficulties in predicting the appropriate time for maintenance and usually they will follow the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) recommendations. Most plant engineers do not have a predictive tool to advise them on compressor maintenance and the necessary steps to be taken. Usually, the engineers will only attend to the equipment when problems or abnormalities arise from it, apart from the planned maintenance. Late decision made on compressor maintenance will sometimes cause problems to operation either due to late arrival of spare parts or staff availability. The objective of this project is to develop a software that will be able to assist engineers in determining the performance deterioration of gas compressor and deciding the optimum time to do maintenance. The maintenance history data is collected and analysed by the software regularly. The correlations between isentropic efficiency, isentropic head, and gas power and the compressor deterioration are studied based on two centrifugal gas compressors from January 2009 to December 2010. Later, a software that is able to produce maintenance advice based on the input parameters given by the user is created. The software is developed using Microsoft Excel 2010 and Microsoft Visual Basic. From the analysis conducted, it is found that due to fouling, isentropic efficiency and isentropic head decrease with time for low pressure compressors. In contrast, the gas power increases with time. Based on these findings, Performance Indicators Monitoring Program (PIMP) is developed

Effects of ported shroud casing treatment on the acoustic and flow behaviour of a centrifugal compressor

[EN] Centrifugal turbomachines of smaller sizes operating at higher speeds have become pervasive due to the increased specific power and reliability achieved by improvements in manufacturing, materials and computational methods. The presence of these small turbomachines, specifically compressors, in helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), auxiliary power units (APUs), turbochargers and micro gas turbines necessitates superior aerodynamic performance over a broad operational range which is widely achieved by ported shroud casing designs. In addition to aerodynamic performance, acoustic emissions have become a critical aspect of design for these small centrifugal compressors due to high operational speeds. Furthermore, the literature on the acoustic effects of the casing treatment is rather limited. Therefore, the impact of ported shroud casing treatment on the acoustic and flow features of the compressor operating at the design and near surge conditions have been quantified by numerically modelling the open and blocked configuration of the compressors. Upon comparing with experimental results, the numerical spectra are shown to capture the differences between the two configurations at the investigated operating points with reasonable accuracy. Although the casing treatment is generally seen to decrease the overall acoustic emission of the compressor at both operating conditions, increased propagation of tonal content in the direction upstream to the impeller is observed, particularly for design operation. Broadband characteristics in the lower and medium frequency regions usually associated with near surge operation including `whoosh' noise are observed to be alleviated by the ported shroud casing treatment. The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support for the research, authorship and/or publication of this article: The project is sponsored and supported by BorgWarner Turbo Systems and the Regional Growth Fund (RGF Grant Award 01.09.07.01/1789C).Sharma, S.; Garcia Tiscar, J.; Allport, JM.; Barrans, S.; Nickson, AK. Model based MIN/MAX override control of centrifugal compressor systems

We consider an application-oriented nonlinear control of centrifugal compressors. Industrial applications require the compressor system to adjust to variable process demands and to be restricted to the valid operation range (e.g. surge limit). We modify a compressor model of Gravdahl and Egeland to account for characteristic features of industrial compressors and combine the framework of nonlinear output regulation via the internal model principle with MIN/MAX-override control in order to implement trajectory tracking between given state constraints. Furthermore the switching scheme as well as the practical stability of the closed-loop MIMO system is analysed by the corresponding switched and impulsive error system. The override control is demonstrated by applying discharge pressure control, anti-surge control and maximum discharge pressure limitation
