    Intelligent Decentralized Adaptive Controller Design for a Class of Large Scale Nonlinear Non-affine Systems: Nonlinear Observer-based Approach

    Abstract: In this study, an observer based decentralized Fuzzy Adaptive Controller (FAC) is designed for a class of large scale non-affine nonlinear systems with unknown functions of the subsystems and interactions. The proposed controller has the following main characteristics: 1) On-line adaptation of both controller and observer parameters, 2) stabilization of the closed loop system, 3) convergence of both tracking and observer errors to zero, 4) boundedness of all signals involved, 5) being prone to employing experts' knowledge in controller design procedure, 6) chattering avoidance. An illustrative example is given to show the promising performance of the proposed method

    Fuzzy control turns 50: 10 years later

    In 2015, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Fuzzy Sets, ten years after the main milestones regarding its applications in fuzzy control in their 40th birthday were reviewed in FSS, see [1]. Ten years is at the same time a long period and short time thinking to the inner dynamics of research. This paper, presented for these 50 years of Fuzzy Sets is taking into account both thoughts. A first part presents a quick recap of the history of fuzzy control: from model-free design, based on human reasoning to quasi-LPV (Linear Parameter Varying) model-based control design via some milestones, and key applications. The second part shows where we arrived and what the improvements are since the milestone of the first 40 years.     Robust Adaptive Fuzzy Control for a Class of Uncertain MIMO Nonlinear Systems with Input Saturation

    This paper studies the robust adaptive fuzzy control design problem for a class of uncertain multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) nonlinear systems in the presence of actuator amplitude and rate saturation. In the control scheme, fuzzy logic systems are used to approximate unknown nonlinear systems. To compensate the effect of input saturations, an auxiliary system is constructed and the actuator saturations then can be augmented into the controller. The modified tracking error is introduced and used in fuzzy parameter update laws. Furthermore, in order to deal with fuzzy approximation errors for unknown nonlinear systems and external disturbances, a robust compensation control is designed. It is proved that the closed-loop system obtains H∞ tracking performance through Lyapunov analysis. Steady and transient modified tracking errors are analyzed and the bound of modified tracking errors can be adjusted by tuning certain design parameters. The proposed control scheme is applicable to uncertain nonlinear systems not only with actuator amplitude saturation, but also with actuator amplitude and rate saturation. Detailed simulation results of a rigid body satellite attitude control system in the presence of parametric uncertainties, external disturbances, and control input constraints have been presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme

    Novel Distance Measure in Fuzzy TOPSIS for Supply Chain Strategy Based Supplier Selection

    In today’s highly competitive environment, organizations need to evaluate and select suppliers based on their manufacturing strategy. Identification of supply chain strategy of the organization, determination of decision criteria, and methods of supplier selection are appearing to be the most important components in research area in the field of supply chain management. In this paper, evaluation of suppliers is done based on the balanced scorecard framework using new distance measure in fuzzy TOPSIS by considering the supply chain strategy of the manufacturing organization. To take care of vagueness in decision making, trapezoidal fuzzy number is assumed for pairwise comparisons to determine relative weights of perspectives and criteria of supplier selection. Also, linguistic variables specified in terms of trapezoidal fuzzy number are considered for the payoff values of criteria of the suppliers. These fuzzy numbers satisfied the Jensen based inequality.     Events Recognition System for Water Treatment Works

    The supply of drinking water in sufficient quantity and required quality is a challenging task for water companies. Tackling this task successfully depends largely on ensuring a continuous high quality level of water treatment at Water Treatment Works (WTW). Therefore, processes at WTWs are highly automated and controlled. A reliable and rapid detection of faulty sensor data and failure events at WTWs processes is of prime importance for its efficient and effective operation. Therefore, the vast majority of WTWs operated in the UK make use of event detection systems that automatically generate alarms after the detection of abnormal behaviour on observed signals to ensure an early detection of WTW’s process failures. Event detection systems usually deployed at WTWs apply thresholds to the monitored signals for the recognition of WTW’s faulty processes. The research work described in this thesis investigates new methods for near real-time event detection at WTWs by the implementation of statistical process control and machine learning techniques applied for an automated near real-time recognition of failure events at WTWs processes. The resulting novel Hybrid CUSUM Event Recognition System (HC-ERS) makes use of new online sensor data validation and pre-processing techniques and utilises two distinct detection methodologies: first for fault detection on individual signals and second for the recognition of faulty processes and events at WTWs. The fault detection methodology automatically detects abnormal behaviour of observed water quality parameters in near real-time using the data of the corresponding sensors that is online validated and pre-processed. The methodology utilises CUSUM control charts to predict the presence of faults by tracking the variation of each signal individually to identify abnormal shifts in its mean. The basic CUSUM methodology was refined by investigating optimised interdependent parameters for each signal individually. The combined predictions of CUSUM fault detection on individual signals serves the basis for application of the second event detection methodology. The second event detection methodology automatically identifies faults at WTW’s processes respectively failure events at WTWs in near real-time, utilising the faults detected by CUSUM fault detection on individual signals beforehand. The method applies Random Forest classifiers to predict the presence of an event at WTW’s processes. All methods have been developed to be generic and generalising well across different drinking water treatment processes at WTWs. HC-ERS has proved to be effective in the detection of failure events at WTWs demonstrated by the application on real data of water quality signals with historical events from a UK’s WTWs. The methodology achieved a peak F1 value of 0.84 and generates 0.3 false alarms per week. These results demonstrate the ability of method to automatically and reliably detect failure events at WTW’s processes in near real-time and also show promise for practical application of the HC-ERS in industry. The combination of both methodologies presents a unique contribution to the field of near real-time event detection at WTW

    Neural network based optimal control of HVAC&R systems

    Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems have wide applications in providing a desired indoor environment for different types of buildings. It is well acknowledged that 30%-40% of the total energy generated is consumed by buildings and HVAC&R systems alone account for more than 50% of the building energy consumption. Low operational efficiency especially under partial load conditions and poor control are part of reasons for such high energy consumption. To improve energy efficiency, HVAC&R systems should be properly operated to maintain a comfortable and healthy indoor environment under dynamic ambient and indoor conditions with the least energy consumption. This research focuses on the optimal operation of HVAC&R systems. The optimization problem is formulated and solved to find the optimal set points for the chilled water supply temperature, discharge air temperature and AHU (air handling unit) fan static pressure such that the indoor environment is maintained with the least chiller and fan energy consumption. To achieve this objective, a dynamic system model is developed first to simulate the system behavior under different control schemes and operating conditions. The system model is modular in structure, which includes a water-cooled vapor compression chiller model and a two-zone VAV system model. A fuzzy-set based extended transformation approach is then applied to investigate the uncertainties of this model caused by uncertain parameters and the sensitivities of the control inputs with respect to the interested model outputs. A multi-layer feed forward neural network is constructed and trained in unsupervised mode to minimize the cost function which is comprised of overall energy cost and penalty cost when one or more constraints are violated. After training, the network is implemented as a supervisory controller to compute the optimal settings for the system. In order to implement the optimal set points predicted by the supervisory controller, a set of five adaptive PI (proportional-integral) controllers are designed for each of the five local control loops of the HVAC&R system. The five controllers are used to track optimal set points and zone air temperature set points. Parameters of these PI controllers are tuned online to reduce tracking errors. The updating rules are derived from Lyapunov stability analysis. Simulation results show that compared to the conventional night reset operation scheme, the optimal operation scheme saves around 10% energy under full load condition and 19% energy under partial load conditions
