    Fuzzy Contrast Improvement for Low Altitude Aerial Images

    International audiencePrecision agriculture is becoming very important in improving food security. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have higher possibilities in this way, improving real time data gathered with aerial sensors. Fuzzy techniques have proved to be highly effective in managing vagueness and ambiguity. The unmanned helicopters are highly valuable due to the level of maneuverability that they possess. We believe that many different degrees of autonomy and functionalities of UAVs will be useful in agriculture. We present a new process to extract data from aerial images that comes from low altitude UAVs. We combined NDVI algorithm output with the RSWHE-M method on grey scaled images. Primary results show that our method extracts images that are visually acceptable to human eye and have a natural appearance

    Fuzzy Controller for UAV-Landing Task Using 3D-Position Visual Estimation

    This paper presents a Fuzzy Control application for a landing task of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, using the 3D-position estimation based on visual tracking of piecewise planar objects. This application allows the UAV to land on scenarios in which it is only possible to use visual information to obtain the position of the vehicle. The use of the homography permits a realtime estimation of the UAV's pose with respect to a helipad using a monocular camera. Fuzzy Logic allows the definition of a model-free control system of the UAV. The Fuzzy controller analyzes the visual information to generate altitude commands for the UAV to develop the landing task

    Robust Modular Feature-Based Terrain-Aided Visual Navigation and Mapping

    The visual feature-based Terrain-Aided Navigation (TAN) system presented in this thesis addresses the problem of constraining inertial drift introduced into the location estimate of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in GPS-denied environment. The presented TAN system utilises salient visual features representing semantic or human-interpretable objects (roads, forest and water boundaries) from onboard aerial imagery and associates them to a database of reference features created a-priori, through application of the same feature detection algorithms to satellite imagery. Correlation of the detected features with the reference features via a series of the robust data association steps allows a localisation solution to be achieved with a finite absolute bound precision defined by the certainty of the reference dataset. The feature-based Visual Navigation System (VNS) presented in this thesis was originally developed for a navigation application using simulated multi-year satellite image datasets. The extension of the system application into the mapping domain, in turn, has been based on the real (not simulated) flight data and imagery. In the mapping study the full potential of the system, being a versatile tool for enhancing the accuracy of the information derived from the aerial imagery has been demonstrated. Not only have the visual features, such as road networks, shorelines and water bodies, been used to obtain a position ’fix’, they have also been used in reverse for accurate mapping of vehicles detected on the roads into an inertial space with improved precision. Combined correction of the geo-coding errors and improved aircraft localisation formed a robust solution to the defense mapping application. A system of the proposed design will provide a complete independent navigation solution to an autonomous UAV and additionally give it object tracking capability

    Use of Multispectral Aerial Videography for Jurisdictional Delineation of Wetland Areas

    Multispectral aerial videography was used to reproduce the jurisdictional delineation of wetland area of approximately 50 hectares in Davis County, Utah Imagery from the system consisted of three-band composite with wavelengths covering 550 nm (±10 nm), 650 nm (±10 nm), and 850 nm (±10 nm). The site was overflown at three different flight dates during the 1992 growing season (June 2, July 22, October 1). Imagery resolution varied from 0.56 m to 0.81 m. Mosaiced images were analyzed with a Supervised clustering/maximum likelihood classifier, ISODATA clustering/Euclidan classifier, statistical clustering/maximum likelihood classifier, and fuzzy c-means clustering. Overall accuracies for wetland/upland designations as compared to ground truth data varied from 60% to 75%. The ISODATA method was the poorest performer for all dates and both of two accuracy testing techniques. Supervised clustering and statistical clustering were comparable with a slight edge in accuracy to the supervised clustering. The best all-round performer was the fuzzy c-means algorithm in terms of time spent and accuracy

    Using Unmanned Aerial Systems for Deriving Forest Stand Characteristics in Mixed Hardwoods of West Virginia

    Forest inventory information is a principle driver for forest management decisions. Information gathered through these inventories provides a summary of the condition of forested stands. The method by which remote sensing aids land managers is changing rapidly. Imagery produced from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) offer high temporal and spatial resolutions to small-scale forest management. UAS imagery is less expensive and easier to coordinate to meet project needs compared to traditional manned aerial imagery. This study focused on producing an efficient and approachable work flow for producing forest stand board volume estimates from UAS imagery in mixed hardwood stands of West Virginia. A supplementary aim of this project was to evaluate which season was best to collect imagery for forest inventory. True color imagery was collected with a DJI Phantom 3 Professional UAS and was processed in Agisoft Photoscan Professional. Automated tree crown segmentation was performed with Trimble eCognition Developer’s multi-resolution segmentation function with manual optimization of parameters through an iterative process. Individual tree volume metrics were derived from field data relationships and volume estimates were processed in EZ CRUZ forest inventory software. The software, at best, correctly segmented 43% of the individual tree crowns. No correlation between season of imagery acquisition and quality of segmentation was shown. Volume and other stand characteristics were not accurately estimated and were faulted by poor segmentation. However, the imagery was able to capture gaps consistently and provide a visualization of forest health. Difficulties, successes and time required for these procedures were thoroughly noted

    Vision-Based navigation system for unmanned aerial vehicles

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorThe main objective of this dissertation is to provide Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with a robust navigation system; in order to allow the UAVs to perform complex tasks autonomously and in real-time. The proposed algorithms deal with solving the navigation problem for outdoor as well as indoor environments, mainly based on visual information that is captured by monocular cameras. In addition, this dissertation presents the advantages of using the visual sensors as the main source of data, or complementing other sensors in providing useful information; in order to improve the accuracy and the robustness of the sensing purposes. The dissertation mainly covers several research topics based on computer vision techniques: (I) Pose Estimation, to provide a solution for estimating the 6D pose of the UAV. This algorithm is based on the combination of SIFT detector and FREAK descriptor; which maintains the performance of the feature points matching and decreases the computational time. Thereafter, the pose estimation problem is solved based on the decomposition of the world-to-frame and frame-to-frame homographies. (II) Obstacle Detection and Collision Avoidance, in which, the UAV is able to sense and detect the frontal obstacles that are situated in its path. The detection algorithm mimics the human behaviors for detecting the approaching obstacles; by analyzing the size changes of the detected feature points, combined with the expansion ratios of the convex hull constructed around the detected feature points from consecutive frames. Then, by comparing the area ratio of the obstacle and the position of the UAV, the method decides if the detected obstacle may cause a collision. Finally, the algorithm extracts the collision-free zones around the obstacle, and combining with the tracked waypoints, the UAV performs the avoidance maneuver. (III) Navigation Guidance, which generates the waypoints to determine the flight path based on environment and the situated obstacles. Then provide a strategy to follow the path segments and in an efficient way and perform the flight maneuver smoothly. (IV) Visual Servoing, to offer different control solutions (Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) and PID), based on the obtained visual information; in order to achieve the flight stability as well as to perform the correct maneuver; to avoid the possible collisions and track the waypoints. All the proposed algorithms have been verified with real flights in both indoor and outdoor environments, taking into consideration the visual conditions; such as illumination and textures. The obtained results have been validated against other systems; such as VICON motion capture system, DGPS in the case of pose estimate algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithms have been compared with several previous works in the state of the art, and are results proves the improvement in the accuracy and the robustness of the proposed algorithms. Finally, this dissertation concludes that the visual sensors have the advantages of lightweight and low consumption and provide reliable information, which is considered as a powerful tool in the navigation systems to increase the autonomy of the UAVs for real-world applications.El objetivo principal de esta tesis es proporcionar Vehiculos Aereos no Tripulados (UAVs) con un sistema de navegacion robusto, para permitir a los UAVs realizar tareas complejas de forma autonoma y en tiempo real. Los algoritmos propuestos tratan de resolver problemas de la navegacion tanto en ambientes interiores como al aire libre basandose principalmente en la informacion visual captada por las camaras monoculares. Ademas, esta tesis doctoral presenta la ventaja de usar sensores visuales bien como fuente principal de datos o complementando a otros sensores en el suministro de informacion util, con el fin de mejorar la precision y la robustez de los procesos de deteccion. La tesis cubre, principalmente, varios temas de investigacion basados en tecnicas de vision por computador: (I) Estimacion de la Posicion y la Orientacion (Pose), para proporcionar una solucion a la estimacion de la posicion y orientacion en 6D del UAV. Este algoritmo se basa en la combinacion del detector SIFT y el descriptor FREAK, que mantiene el desempeno del a funcion de puntos de coincidencia y disminuye el tiempo computacional. De esta manera, se soluciona el problema de la estimacion de la posicion basandose en la descomposicion de las homografias mundo a imagen e imagen a imagen. (II) Deteccion obstaculos y elusion colisiones, donde el UAV es capaz de percibir y detectar los obstaculos frontales que se encuentran en su camino. El algoritmo de deteccion imita comportamientos humanos para detectar los obstaculos que se acercan, mediante el analisis de la magnitud del cambio de los puntos caracteristicos detectados de referencia, combinado con los ratios de expansion de los contornos convexos construidos alrededor de los puntos caracteristicos detectados en frames consecutivos. A continuacion, comparando la proporcion del area del obstaculo y la posicion del UAV, el metodo decide si el obstaculo detectado puede provocar una colision. Por ultimo, el algoritmo extrae las zonas libres de colision alrededor del obstaculo y combinandolo con los puntos de referencia, elUAV realiza la maniobra de evasion. (III) Guiado de navegacion, que genera los puntos de referencia para determinar la trayectoria de vuelo basada en el entorno y en los obstaculos detectados que encuentra. Proporciona una estrategia para seguir los segmentos del trazado de una manera eficiente y realizar la maniobra de vuelo con suavidad. (IV) Guiado por Vision, para ofrecer soluciones de control diferentes (Control de Logica Fuzzy (FLC) y PID), basados en la informacion visual obtenida con el fin de lograr la estabilidad de vuelo, asi como realizar la maniobra correcta para evitar posibles colisiones y seguir los puntos de referencia. Todos los algoritmos propuestos han sido verificados con vuelos reales en ambientes exteriores e interiores, tomando en consideracion condiciones visuales como la iluminacion y las texturas. Los resultados obtenidos han sido validados con otros sistemas: como el sistema de captura de movimiento VICON y DGPS en el caso del algoritmo de estimacion de la posicion y orientacion. Ademas, los algoritmos propuestos han sido comparados con trabajos anteriores recogidos en el estado del arte con resultados que demuestran una mejora de la precision y la robustez de los algoritmos propuestos.     Guidance for benthic habitat mapping: an aerial photographic approach

    This document, Guidance for Benthic Habitat Mapping: An Aerial Photographic Approach, describes proven technology that can be applied in an operational manner by state-level scientists and resource managers. This information is based on the experience gained by NOAA Coastal Services Center staff and state-level cooperators in the production of a series of benthic habitat data sets in Delaware, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, the Virgin Islands, and Washington, as well as during Center-sponsored workshops on coral remote sensing and seagrass and aquatic habitat assessment. (PDF contains 39 pages) The original benthic habitat document, NOAA Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP): Guidance for Regional Implementation (Dobson et al.), was published by the Department of Commerce in 1995. That document summarized procedures that were to be used by scientists throughout the United States to develop consistent and reliable coastal land cover and benthic habitat information. Advances in technology and new methodologies for generating these data created the need for this updated report, which builds upon the foundation of its predecessor

    Factors affecting image quality in aerial photography

    Thesis (M.A.)--Boston UniversityA laboratory test system was set up to permit the introduction of image degrading factors (haze, vibration, etc.) encountered in aerial photography. This thesis describes the test equipment, procedure and results of each phase, and sets forth some general conclusions in the form of a table of image defects with their possible causes. From the many factors which may affect the image in an aerial negative, several of the more common were chosen for study. These included haze, windows, focus, translatory image motion, vibration, obstruction in the image-forming rays, and variations of exposure and development. The tests conducted were generally of a qualitative nature. The test system consisted of an electronic flash unit with opal diffuser, a positive transparency target, a collimator, a 24-inch f/6 lens, and a focusing-back magazine with vacuum. After determining optimum focus and establishing processing techniques, a negative from the system was obtained to be used as a standard throughout the series of tests. The factors mentioned previously were then introduced into the system one at a time and the resulting negatives compared with the standard. The similarity of many of the effects emphasized the importance of careful analyses of aerial negatives. The advantage of a short exposure time was probably the most outstanding observation made. Although this is not a newly observed fact, the 50 microsecond exposure of the electronic flash unit did emphasize that vibration and other forms of image motion would assume roles of lesser importance if equipment and photosensitive material would permit exposures of shorter duration. After the tests were completed and summarized, it was concluded that the laboratory test method, in the majority of cases, is a reasonable approach to the study of image degrading factors
