    Where to Decide? Centralized vs. Distributed Vehicle Assignment for Platoon Formation

    Platooning is a promising cooperative driving application for future intelligent transportation systems. In order to assign vehicles to platoons, some algorithm for platoon formation is required. Such vehicle-to-platoon assignments have to be computed on-demand, e.g., when vehicles join or leave the freeways. In order to get best results from platooning, individual properties of involved vehicles have to be considered during the assignment computation. In this paper, we explore the computation of vehicle-to-platoon assignments as an optimization problem based on similarity between vehicles. We define the similarity and, vice versa, the deviation among vehicles based on the desired driving speed of vehicles and their position on the road. We create three approaches to solve this assignment problem: centralized solver, centralized greedy, and distributed greedy, using a Mixed Integer Programming solver and greedy heuristics, respectively. Conceptually, the approaches differ in both knowledge about vehicles as well as methodology. We perform a large-scale simulation study using PlaFoSim to compare all approaches. While the distributed greedy approach seems to have disadvantages due to the limited local knowledge, it performs as good as the centralized solver approach across most metrics. Both outperform the centralized greedy approach, which suffers from synchronization and greedy selection effects.Since the centralized solver approach assumes global knowledge and requires a complex Mixed Integer Programming solver to compute vehicle-to-platoon assignments, we consider the distributed greedy approach to have the best performance among all presented approaches

    Green Logistics : Advanced Methods for Transport Logistics Management Systems Including Platooning and Alternative Fuel Powered Vehicles

    Green Logistics has attracted increased attention from researchers during the last few years, due to the growing environmental awareness. Road Transport is a major factor in climate change and accounts for a large proportion of the total UK emissions, including Carbon Dioxide (CO₂). With traffic and congestion levels growing, efficient routing combined with greener (more environmentally friendly) vehicles will be of great importance. The purpose of this thesis is two-fold: i) to provide an insight into Green Logistics and ways in which green technologies can be combined within the vehicle routing problem and ii) identifying new variants of the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP) that can be applied to real-life instances; The Platooning Routing Problem with Changing Split Points, and the proposition of a Hyper-Realistic Electric Vehicle Energy Consumption model that can be applied to the E-VRP. A thorough CO₂ experiment was also conducted on a rolling road, providing useful data that future research can use to further increase the accuracy of routing models. The platooning of vehicles proves to be an important technique that can lead to large decreases in fuel consumption and can be easily implemented in most transport systems; the process requires advanced and accurate computer systems that are only now becoming available to manufacturers. The Platooning model is designed and tested within this thesis and it is hoped to spark further interest in this crucial area of research. Extensions to the Platooning Problem include the addition of heterogeneous fleets and how they change the dynamics of the proposed problems, as well as further work on the placement of the critical splitting point. Allowing the consideration of using limited range Electric Vehicles (EVs) as well as Conventional Vehicles (CVs) and Alternative Fuel powered Vehicles (AFVs) can further increase the emission savings and are becoming progressively popular in today's society. We therefore have carried out extensive research around the area of AFV's including detailed battery specifics for EV's. The objective is to minimise the amount of emissions while satisfying the time window requirements of customers maintaining low overall financial costs. The resulting emissions are largely affected by the electricity fuel mix of the country, we found that the indirect EV emissions for a 30kwh EV can vary by as much as 33% throughout the day and as much as 68% throughout the year with different seasons. Various heuristic and metaheuristic solution techniques as well as several classical heuristics are implemented including the Clarke and Wright Savings heuristic algorithm (CWSA), the Sweep Algorithm and the Variable Neighbourhood Search (VNS) method. These heuristic and metaheuristic models are tested on the Christofides et al. datasets and we achieve solutions that are on average 1.67% and 8.5% deviated from the best-known solution for unrestricted route lengths and restricted max route length problems respectively. Following this a platooning model is generated and tested on various datasets, including a real-life example along the roads of the South East of the UK. Platooning proves to bring benefits to the VRP, with the extensions discussed in this thesis providing increased savings to emissions. On three of the dataset problems of the small and medium size problems a significant fuel saving of more than 1% was achieved. With future research and additional avenues explored Platooning can make a significant reduction to emissions and make an impact on improving air quality. The EV model proposed is designed to trigger further research on ultra-realistic energy models with the aim of being applied to a real-life organisation with various constraints including factors such as battery health, travel speed, vehicle load and transportation distance. This thesis provides useful insights into how important the aspect of environmental route planning is, providing advice on tangible and intangible benefits such as cost savings and a reduction in carbon emissions

    Evaporator Modeling and an Optimal Control Strategy Development of an Organic Rankine Cycle Waste Heat Recovery System for a Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Application

    The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) has proven to be a promising technology for Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) systems in heavy duty diesel engine applications. However, due to the highly transient heat source, controlling the working fluid flow through the ORC system and maximizing the heat recovery is a challenge for real time application. To that end, this research resulted in the following main developments. The first new development is in the area of heat exchanger modeling. The heat exchanger is a key component within the WHR system and it governs the dynamics of the complete ORC system. The heat exchanger model is extended using a thermal image data to improve its phase length prediction capability. It’s shown that the new identified empirical equations help improve the phase length estimation by 43% over a set of transient experiments. As a result, the model can be used to develop an improved control oriented moving boundary model and to provide insights into evaporator design. The second new development is the advancement of the control design of an ORC system. With advanced knowledge of the heat source dynamics, there is potential to enhance power optimization from the WHR system through predictive optimal control. The proposed approach in this this dissertation is a look-ahead control strategy where, the future vehicle speed is predicted utilizing road topography and V2V connectivity. The forecasted vehicle speed is utilized to predict the engine speed and torque, which facilitates estimation of the engine exhaust conditions used in the ORC control model. In the simulation study, a reference tracking controller is designed based on the Model Predictive Control (MPC) methodology. Two variants of Non-linear MPC (NMPC) are evaluated: an NMPC with look-ahead exhaust conditions and a baseline NMPC without the knowledge of future exhaust conditions. Simulation results show no particular improvement to working fluid superheat tracking at the evaporator outlet via the look-ahead strategy for a drive cycle. However, the look-ahead control strategy does provide a substantial reduction in system control effort via dampening the heavily transient working fluid pump actuation, enhancing pump longevity, health, and reducing pump power consumption. This reduction in pump actuation helps the NMPC with preview to maintain the superheat lower than the NMPC without this feature for certain frequency of the exhaust conditions. Overall, NMPC with preview feature can help reduce parasitic losses, like pump power and improve power generation. The third development addresses the modeling errors and measurement inaccuracies for NMPC implementation. NMPC is inherently a state feedback system and for that reason an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is used to estimate unmeasurable states inside the ORC evaporators based on exhaust gas and working fluid temperatures. Since it is not realistic to expect that the system model will perfectly describe the behavior of the evaporator dynamics in all operating conditions, the estimator is therefore augmented with a disturbance model for offset free MPC tracking. Simulation study shows that the augmented system is perfectly capable of discarding the model errors and rejecting the measurement inaccuracies. Moreover, experimental validation confirms that no steady state error is observed during online implementation of the augmented EKF. Finally, experimental validation of the designed NMPC control strategy was conducted. The performance of the NMPC was evaluated on a heavily transient drive cycle, as well as on a sinusoidal generated heat signals. Both experimental and simulated sinusoidal exhaust condition shows that evaporator under consideration inherently helps attenuate the fluctuating exhaust conditions due to its thermal inertia especially for heat signals of shorter time periods. However for slow changing exhaust conditions, a slower rate of change of working fluid flow helps in inhibiting temperature overshoot at the evaporator outlet

Innovative technologies and experiences of WIM system implementation are presented. Application of WIM data to infrastructure, mainly bridges and pavements, is among the main topics. However, the most demanding application is now WIM for enforcement, and the greatest challenge is WIM for direct enforcement. Most of the countries and road authorities should ensure a full compliance of heavy vehicle weights and dimensions with the current regulations. Another challenging objective is to extend the lifetimes of existing road assets, despite of increasing heavy vehicle loads and flow, and without compromising with the structural safety. Fair competition and road charging also require accurately monitoring commercial vehicle weights by WIM. WIM contributes to a global ITS (Intelligent Transport System) providing useful data on heavy good vehicles to implement Performance Based Standards (PBS) and Intelligent Access Programme (IAP, Australia) or Smart Infrastructure Access Programme (SIAP). The conference reports the latest research and developments since the last conference in 2016, from all around the World.     IoT and Sensor Networks in Industry and Society

    The exponential progress of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is one of the main elements that fueled the acceleration of the globalization pace. Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data analytics are some of the key players of the digital transformation that is affecting every aspect of human's daily life, from environmental monitoring to healthcare systems, from production processes to social interactions. In less than 20 years, people's everyday life has been revolutionized, and concepts such as Smart Home, Smart Grid and Smart City have become familiar also to non-technical users. The integration of embedded systems, ubiquitous Internet access, and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications have paved the way for paradigms such as IoT and Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) to be also introduced in high-requirement environments such as those related to industrial processes, under the forms of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT or I2oT) and Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS). As a consequence, in 2011 the German High-Tech Strategy 2020 Action Plan for Germany first envisioned the concept of Industry 4.0, which is rapidly reshaping traditional industrial processes. The term refers to the promise to be the fourth industrial revolution. Indeed, the first industrial revolution was triggered by water and steam power. Electricity and assembly lines enabled mass production in the second industrial revolution. In the third industrial revolution, the introduction of control automation and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) gave a boost to factory production. As opposed to the previous revolutions, Industry 4.0 takes advantage of Internet access, M2M communications, and deep learning not only to improve production efficiency but also to enable the so-called mass customization, i.e. the mass production of personalized products by means of modularized product design and flexible processes. Less than five years later, in January 2016, the Japanese 5th Science and Technology Basic Plan took a further step by introducing the concept of Super Smart Society or Society 5.0. According to this vision, in the upcoming future, scientific and technological innovation will guide our society into the next social revolution after the hunter-gatherer, agrarian, industrial, and information eras, which respectively represented the previous social revolutions. Society 5.0 is a human-centered society that fosters the simultaneous achievement of economic, environmental and social objectives, to ensure a high quality of life to all citizens. This information-enabled revolution aims to tackle today’s major challenges such as an ageing population, social inequalities, depopulation and constraints related to energy and the environment. Accordingly, the citizens will be experiencing impressive transformations into every aspect of their daily lives. This book offers an insight into the key technologies that are going to shape the future of industry and society. It is subdivided into five parts: the I Part presents a horizontal view of the main enabling technologies, whereas the II-V Parts offer a vertical perspective on four different environments. The I Part, dedicated to IoT and Sensor Network architectures, encompasses three Chapters. In Chapter 1, Peruzzi and Pozzebon analyse the literature on the subject of energy harvesting solutions for IoT monitoring systems and architectures based on Low-Power Wireless Area Networks (LPWAN). The Chapter does not limit the discussion to Long Range Wise Area Network (LoRaWAN), SigFox and Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) communication protocols, but it also includes other relevant solutions such as DASH7 and Long Term Evolution MAchine Type Communication (LTE-M). In Chapter 2, Hussein et al. discuss the development of an Internet of Things message protocol that supports multi-topic messaging. The Chapter further presents the implementation of a platform, which integrates the proposed communication protocol, based on Real Time Operating System. In Chapter 3, Li et al. investigate the heterogeneous task scheduling problem for data-intensive scenarios, to reduce the global task execution time, and consequently reducing data centers' energy consumption. The proposed approach aims to maximize the efficiency by comparing the cost between remote task execution and data migration. The II Part is dedicated to Industry 4.0, and includes two Chapters. In Chapter 4, Grecuccio et al. propose a solution to integrate IoT devices by leveraging a blockchain-enabled gateway based on Ethereum, so that they do not need to rely on centralized intermediaries and third-party services. As it is better explained in the paper, where the performance is evaluated in a food-chain traceability application, this solution is particularly beneficial in Industry 4.0 domains. Chapter 5, by De Fazio et al., addresses the issue of safety in workplaces by presenting a smart garment that integrates several low-power sensors to monitor environmental and biophysical parameters. This enables the detection of dangerous situations, so as to prevent or at least reduce the consequences of workers accidents. The III Part is made of two Chapters based on the topic of Smart Buildings. In Chapter 6, Petroșanu et al. review the literature about recent developments in the smart building sector, related to the use of supervised and unsupervised machine learning models of sensory data. The Chapter poses particular attention on enhanced sensing, energy efficiency, and optimal building management. In Chapter 7, Oh examines how much the education of prosumers about their energy consumption habits affects power consumption reduction and encourages energy conservation, sustainable living, and behavioral change, in residential environments. In this Chapter, energy consumption monitoring is made possible thanks to the use of smart plugs. Smart Transport is the subject of the IV Part, including three Chapters. In Chapter 8, Roveri et al. propose an approach that leverages the small world theory to control swarms of vehicles connected through Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communication protocols. Indeed, considering a queue dominated by short-range car-following dynamics, the Chapter demonstrates that safety and security are increased by the introduction of a few selected random long-range communications. In Chapter 9, Nitti et al. present a real time system to observe and analyze public transport passengers' mobility by tracking them throughout their journey on public transport vehicles. The system is based on the detection of the active Wi-Fi interfaces, through the analysis of Wi-Fi probe requests. In Chapter 10, Miler et al. discuss the development of a tool for the analysis and comparison of efficiency indicated by the integrated IT systems in the operational activities undertaken by Road Transport Enterprises (RTEs). The authors of this Chapter further provide a holistic evaluation of efficiency of telematics systems in RTE operational management. The book ends with the two Chapters of the V Part on Smart Environmental Monitoring. In Chapter 11, He et al. propose a Sea Surface Temperature Prediction (SSTP) model based on time-series similarity measure, multiple pattern learning and parameter optimization. In this strategy, the optimal parameters are determined by means of an improved Particle Swarm Optimization method. In Chapter 12, Tsipis et al. present a low-cost, WSN-based IoT system that seamlessly embeds a three-layered cloud/fog computing architecture, suitable for facilitating smart agricultural applications, especially those related to wildfire monitoring. We wish to thank all the authors that contributed to this book for their efforts.     This Special Issue is dedicated to sustainable mobility and transport, with a special focus on technological advancements. Global transport systems are significant sources of air, land, and water emissions. A key motivator for this Special Issue was the diversity and complexity of mitigating transport emissions and industry adaptions towards increasingly stricter regulation. Originally, the Special Issue called for papers devoted to all forms of mobility and transports. The papers published in this Special Issue cover a wide range of topics, aiming to increase understanding of the impacts and effects of mobility and transport in working towards sustainability, where most studies place technological innovations at the heart of the matter. The goal of the Special Issue is to present research that focuses, on the one hand, on the challenges and obstacles on a system-level decision making of clean mobility, and on the other, on indirect effects caused by these changes

    Intelligent Mobility in Smart Cities

    Smart Cities seek to optimize their systems by increasing integration through approaches such as increased interoperability, seamless system integration, and automation. Thus, they have the potential to deliver substantial efficiency gains and eliminate redundancy. To add to the complexity of the problem, the integration of systems for efficiency gains may compromise the resilience of an urban system. This all needs to be taken into consideration when thinking about Smart Cities. The transportation field must also apply the principles and concepts mentioned above. This cannot be understood without considering its links and effects on the other components of an urban system. New technologies allow for new means of travel to be built, and new business models allow for existing ones to be utilized. This Special Issue puts together papers with different focuses, but all of them tackle the topic of smart mobility
