    Management of Data and Collaboration for Business Processes

    A business process (BP) is a collection of activities and services assembled together to accomplish a business goal. Business process management (BPM) refers to the man- agement and support for a collection of inter-related business processes, which has been playing an essential role in all enterprises. Business practitioners today face enormous difficulties in managing data for BPs due to the fact that the data for BP execution is scattered across databases for enterprise, auxiliary data stores managed by the BPM sys- tems, and even file systems (e.g., definition of BP models). Moreover, current data and business process modeling approaches leave associations of persistent data in databases and data in BPs to the implementation level with little abstraction. Implementing busi- ness logic involves data access from and to database often demands high development efforts.In the current study, we conceptualize the data used in BPs by capturing all needed information for a BP throughout its execution into a “universal artifact”. The concep- tualization provides a foundation for the separation of BP execution and BP data. With the new framework, the data analysis can be carried out without knowing the logic of BPs and the modification of the BP logics can be directly applied without understanding the data structure.Even though universal artifacts provide convenient data access for processes, the data is yet stored in the underlying database and the relationship between data in artifacts and the one in database is still undefined. In general, a way to link the data of these two data sources is needed. we propose a data mapping language aiming to bridge BP data and enterprise database, so that the BP designers only need to focus on business data instead of how to manipulate data by accessing the database. We formulate syntactic conditions upon specified mapping in order that updates upon database or BP data can be properly propagated.In database area, mapping database to a view has been widely studied In recently years, data exchange method extends the notion of database views to a target database (i.e., multiple views) by using a set of conjunctive queries called “tuple generating de- pendency” (tgd). Tgd is a language that is easy to understand/specify, expressive, and decidable for a wide range of properties, which is ideal as a mapping language. Naturally, if both enterprise database and artifacts are represented as relational database, we can take advantage of data exchange technology to bridge enterprise database and artifacts by using tgd as well. Therefore, we re-visit the mapping and update propagation problem under the relational setting.In addition to the data management for a single BP, it is equivalently essential to un- derstand how messages and data should be exchanged among multiple collaborative BPs. With the introduction of artifacts, data is explicitly modeled that can be used in a collab- orative setting. Unfortunately, today’s BP collaboration languages (either orchestration or choreography) do not emphasize on how data is evolved during execution. More- over, the existing languages always assume each participant type has a single participant instance. Therefore, a declarative language is introduced to specify the collaboration among BPs with data and multiple instances concerned. The language adopts a subset of linear temporal logics (LTL) as constraints to restrict the behavior of the collaborative BPs.As a follow-up study, we focus on the satisfiability problem of the declarative BP collaboration language, i.e., whether a given specification as a set of constraints allows at least one finite execution. Naturally, if a specification excludes every possible execution, it should be considered as an undesirable design. Therefore, we consider different combi- nation of the constraint types and for each combination, syntactic conditions are provided to decide whether the given constraints are satisfiable. The syntactic conditions automat- ically lead to polynomial testing methods (comparing to PSPACE-complete complexity of general LTL satisfiability testing)

    Domain Architectures as an Instrument to Refine Enterprise Architecture

    Enterprise architecture is concerned with the fundamental organization of the operating environment of an enterprise. The enterprise architecture is used to plan and control the construction of the systems that populate the operating environment. As the scope covered can be considerable in large enterprises, introducing domain architectures to partition and detail the enterprise architecture is a plausible approach. We formulate prescriptive criteria that consistent domain architectures must meet. By integrating the creation of domain architectures into an extended strategic alignment model we develop a theory that accounts for both the creation, scope-setting and detailing. Based on the creation viewpoint we derive a multi-level classification taxonomy. The primary differentiator is that between domains that are created from business usage viewpoints and those that are created from solution construction viewpoints. Four cases of domain architectures from actual practice are described that illustrate the variety encountered. Domain classifications in all cases conform to the theoretical model. The criteria, the developed theory and the cases have both academic relevance as well as significance for practitioners

Processes are at the very heart of each business, and must be understood and carried out by a wide range of actors, from both technical and non-technical backgrounds alike. When embracing digital transformation practices, there is a need for all involved parties to be aware of the underlying business processes in an organization. However, the representational complexity and biases of the state-of-the-art modeling notations pose a challenge in understandability. On the other hand, plain language representations, accessible by nature and easily understood by everyone, are often frowned upon by technical specialists due to their ambiguity. The aim of this thesis is precisely to bridge this gap: Between the world of the techni cal, formal languages and the world of simpler, accessible natural languages. Structured as an article compendium, in this thesis we present four main contributions to address specific problems in the intersection between the fields of natural language processing and business process management.A l’era de la transformació digital, cada vegada més organitzacions comencen a pensar en termes de processos de negoci. Els processos són el nucli principal de tota empresa i, com a tals, han de ser fàcilment comprensibles per un ampli ventall de rols, tant perfils tècnics com no-tècnics. Quan s’adopta la transformació digital, és necessari que totes les parts involucrades estiguin ben informades sobre els protocols implantats com a part del procés de digitalització. Tot i això, la complexitat i biaixos de representació dels llenguatges de modelització que actualment conformen l’estat de l’art sovint en dificulten la seva com prensió. D’altra banda, les representacions basades en documentació usant llenguatge natural, accessibles per naturalesa i fàcilment comprensibles per tothom, moltes vegades són vistes com un problema pels perfils més tècnics a causa de la presència d’ambigüitats en els textos. L’objectiu d’aquesta tesi és precisament el de superar aquesta distància: La distància entre el món dels llenguatges tècnics i formals amb el dels llenguatges naturals, més accessibles i senzills.     Tackling Dierent Business Process Perspectives

    Business Process Management (BPM) has emerged as a discipline to design, control, analyze, and optimize business operations. Conceptual models lie at the core of BPM. In particular, business process models have been taken up by organizations as a means to describe the main activities that are performed to achieve a specific business goal. Process models generally cover different perspectives that underlie separate yet interrelated representations for analyzing and presenting process information. Being primarily driven by process improvement objectives, traditional business process modeling languages focus on capturing the control flow perspective of business processes, that is, the temporal and logical coordination of activities. Such approaches are usually characterized as \u201cactivity-centric\u201d. Nowadays, activity-centric process modeling languages, such as the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) standard, are still the most used in practice and benefit from industrial tool support. Nevertheless, evidence shows that such process modeling languages still lack of support for modeling non-control-flow perspectives, such as the temporal, informational, and decision perspectives, among others. This thesis centres on the BPMN standard and addresses the modeling the temporal, informational, and decision perspectives of process models, with particular attention to processes enacted in healthcare domains. Despite being partially interrelated, the main contributions of this thesis may be partitioned according to the modeling perspective they concern. The temporal perspective deals with the specification, management, and formal verification of temporal constraints. In this thesis, we address the specification and run-time management of temporal constraints in BPMN, by taking advantage of process modularity and of event handling mechanisms included in the standard. Then, we propose three different mappings from BPMN to formal models, to validate the behavior of the proposed process models and to check whether they are dynamically controllable. The informational perspective represents the information entities consumed, produced or manipulated by a process. This thesis focuses on the conceptual connection between processes and data, borrowing concepts from the database domain to enable the representation of which part of a database schema is accessed by a certain process activity. This novel conceptual view is then employed to detect potential data inconsistencies arising when the same data are accessed erroneously by different process activities. The decision perspective encompasses the modeling of the decision-making related to a process, considering where decisions are made in the process and how decision outcomes affect process execution. In this thesis, we investigate the use of the Decision Model and Notation (DMN) standard in conjunction with BPMN starting from a pattern-based approach to ease the derivation of DMN decision models from the data represented in BPMN processes. Besides, we propose a methodology that focuses on the integrated use of BPMN and DMN for modeling decision-intensive care pathways in a real-world application domain

    Business Policy Modeling and Enforcement in Relational Database Systems

    Database systems maintain integrity of the stored information by ensuring that modifications to the database comply with constraints designed by the administrators. As the number of users and applications sharing a common database increases, so does the complexity of the set of constraints that originate from higher level business processes. The lack of a systematic mechanism for integrating and reasoning about a diverse set of evolving and potentially interfering policies manifested as database level constraints makes corporate policy management within relational systems a chaotic process. In this thesis we present a systematic method of mapping a broad set of process centric business policies onto database level constraints. We exploit the observation that the state of a database represents the union of all the states of every ongoing business process and thus establish a bijective relationship between progression in individual business processes and changes in the database state space. We propose graphical notations that are equivalent to integrity constraints specified in linear temporal logic of the past. Furthermore we demonstrate how this notation can accommodate a wide array of workflow patterns, can allow for multiple policy makers to implement their own process centric constraints independently using their own logical policy models, and can model check these constraints within the database system to detect potential conflicting constraints across several different business processes. A major contribution of this thesis is that it bridges several different areas of research including database systems, temporal logics, model checking, and business workflow/policy management to propose an accessible method of integrating, enforcing, and reasoning about the consequences of process-centric constraints embedded in database systems. As a result, the task of ensuring that a database continuously complies with evolving business rules governed by hundreds of processes, which is traditionally handled by an army of database programmers regularly updating triggers and batch procedures, is made easier, more manageable, and more predictable
