    Virtual Communication Stack: Towards Building Integrated Simulator of Mobile Ad Hoc Network-based Infrastructure for Disaster Response Scenarios

    Responses to disastrous events are a challenging problem, because of possible damages on communication infrastructures. For instance, after a natural disaster, infrastructures might be entirely destroyed. Different network paradigms were proposed in the literature in order to deploy adhoc network, and allow dealing with the lack of communications. However, all these solutions focus only on the performance of the network itself, without taking into account the specificities and heterogeneity of the components which use it. This comes from the difficulty to integrate models with different levels of abstraction. Consequently, verification and validation of adhoc protocols cannot guarantee that the different systems will work as expected in operational conditions. However, the DEVS theory provides some mechanisms to allow integration of models with different natures. This paper proposes an integrated simulation architecture based on DEVS which improves the accuracy of ad hoc infrastructure simulators in the case of disaster response scenarios.Comment: Preprint.     The IEEE 802.11 standard defines two operational modes for WLANs: infrastructure based and infrastructureless or ad hoc. A wireless ad hoc network comprises of nodes that communicate with each other without the help of any centralized control. Ad hoc implies that the network does not rely on a pre-existing infrastructure but rather each node participates in routing by forwarding data for other nodes. The decentralized nature improves the scalability of wireless ad hoc network as compared to wireless managed networks. Each node acts as either a host or router. A node that is within the transmission range of any other node can establish a link with the later and becomes its immediate neighbour. However, the nodes in the ad hoc networks are constrained with limited resources and computation capability. So it may not be possible for a node to serve more number of neighbours at some instant of time. This enforces a node to remain connected or disconnected with few of its existing neighbours supporting the dynamic restructuring of the network. The presence of dynamic and adaptive routing protocol enables ad hoc networks to be formed quickly. The Dynamic Transmission Range Adjustment Protocol (DTRAP) provides a mechanism for adjusting transmission range of the ad hoc nodes. They maintain a threshold number of registered neighbours based on their available resources. The node protects its neighbourhood relationship during data communication by controlling its transmission range. It registers or de-registers a communicating node as its neighbour by dynamically varying the transmission range. However a node has a maximum limit on its transmission range. If the distance between the node and its neighbour is less than the transmission range and; 1)if the number of neighbours of a node falls short of threshold value, the node dynamically increases its transmission range in steps until it is ensured of an optimal number of neighbours 2)if the number of neighbours of a node exceeds the threshold value, the node dynamically decreases its transmission range in steps until it is ensured of an optimal number of neighbours. Coloured Petri nets (CP-nets) is the modelling language tool used for systems having communication, synchronisation and resource sharing as significant aspects. It provides a framework for the design, specication, validation, and verication of systems. It describes the states in which the system may be in and the transition between these states. The CPN combines Petri nets and programming languages. Petri nets amalgamate the use of graphical notation and the semantical foundation for modelling in systems. The functional programming language standard ML provides the primitives for the definition of data types and manipulation of data values. Besides providing the strength of a graphical modelling language, CP-nets are theoretically well-founded and versatile enough to be used in practice for systems of the size and complexity of industrial projects

    Detecting Non-Line of Sight to Prevent Accidents in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks

    There are still many challenges in the field of VANETs that encouraged researchers to conduct further investigation in this field to meet these challenges. The issue pertaining to routing protocols such as delivering the warning messages to the vehicles facing Non-Line of Sight (NLOS) situations without causing the storm problem and channel contention, is regarded as a serious dilemma which is required to be tackled in VANET, especially in congested environments. This requires the designing of an efficient mechanism of routing protocol that can broadcast the warning messages from the emergency vehicles to the vehicles under NLOS, reducing the overhead and increasing the packet delivery ratio with a reduced time delay and channel utilisation. The main aim of this work is to develop the novel routing protocol for a high-density environment in VANET through utilisation of its high mobility features, aid of the sensors such as Global Positioning System (GPS) and Navigation System (NS). In this work, the cooperative approach has been used to develop the routing protocol called the Co-operative Volunteer Protocol (CVP), which uses volunteer vehicles to disseminate the warning message from the source to the target vehicle under NLOS issue; this also increases the packet delivery ratio, detection of NLOS and resolution of NLOS by delivering the warning message successfully to the vehicle under NLOS, thereby causing a direct impact on the reduction of collisions between vehicles in normal mode and emergency mode on the road near intersections or on highways. The cooperative approach adopted for warning message dissemination reduced the rebroadcast rate of messages, thereby decreasing significantly the storm issue and the channel contention. A novel architecture has been developed by utilising the concept of a Context-Aware System (CAS), which clarifies the OBU components and their interaction with each other in order to collect data and take the decisions based on the sensed circumstances. The proposed architecture has been divided into three main phases: sensing, processing and acting. The results obtained from the validation of the proposed CVP protocol using the simulator EstiNet under specific conditions and parameters showed that performance of the proposed protocol is better than that of the GRANT protocol with regard to several metrics such as packet delivery ratio, neighbourhood awareness, channel utilisation, overhead and latency. It is also successfully shown that the proposed CVP could detect the NLOS situation and solves it effectively and efficiently for both the intersection scenario in urban areas and the highway scenario

    Secure and robust multi-constrained QoS aware routing algorithm for VANETs

    Secure QoS routing algorithms are a fundamental part of wireless networks that aim to provide services with QoS and security guarantees. In Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs), vehicles perform routing functions, and at the same time act as end-systems thus routing control messages are transmitted unprotected over wireless channels. The QoS of the entire network could be degraded by an attack on the routing process, and manipulation of the routing control messages. In this paper, we propose a novel secure and reliable multi-constrained QoS aware routing algorithm for VANETs. We employ the Ant Colony Optimisation (ACO) technique to compute feasible routes in VANETs subject to multiple QoS constraints determined by the data traffic type. Moreover, we extend the VANET-oriented Evolving Graph (VoEG) model to perform plausibility checks on the exchanged routing control messages among vehicles. Simulation results show that the QoS can be guaranteed while applying security mechanisms to ensure a reliable and robust routing service

    Stability of secure routing protocol in ad hoc wireless network.

    The contributions of this research are threefold. First, it offers a new routing approach to ad hoc wireless network protocols: the Enhanced Heading-direction Angle Routing Protocol (EHARP), which is an enhancement of HARP based on an on-demand routing scheme. We have added important features to overcome its disadvantages and improve its performance, providing the stability and availability required to guarantee the selection of the best path. Each node in the network is able to classify its neighbouring nodes according to their heading directions into four different zone-direction group. The second contribution is to present a new Secure Enhanced Heading-direction Angle Routing Protocol (SEHARP) for ad hoc networks based on the integration of security mechanisms that could be applied to the EHARP routing protocol. Thirdly, we present a new approach to security of access in hostile environments based on the history and relationships among the nodes and on digital operation certificates. We also propose an access activity diagram which explains the steps taken by a node. Security depends on access to the history of each unit, which is used to calculate the cooperative values of each node in the environment

    Emergence in the security of protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks

    This thesis is concerned with the study of secure wireless routing protocols, which have been deployed for the purpose of exchanging information in an adhoc networking enviromnent. A discrete event simulator is developed, utilising an adaptive systems modelling approach and emergence that aims to assess networking protocols in the presence of adversarial behaviour. The model is used in conjunction with the characteristics that routing protocols have and also a number of cryptographic primitives that can be deployed in order to safeguard the information being exchanged. It is shown that both adversarial behaviour, as well as protocol descriptions can be described in a way that allows for them to be treated as input on the machine level. Within the system, the output generated selects the fittest protocol design capable of withstanding one or more particular type of attacks. As a result, a number of new and improved protocol specifications are presented and benchmarked against conventional metrics, such as throughput, latency and delivery criteria. From this process, an architecture for designing wireless routing protocols based on a number of security criteria is presented, whereupon the decision of using particular characteristics in a specification has been passed onto the machine level

    Formal modelling and analysis of denial of services attacks in wireless sensor networks

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have attracted considerable research attention in recent years because of the perceived potential benefits offered by self-organising, multi-hop networks consisting of low-cost and small wireless devices for monitoring or control applications in di±cult environments. WSN may be deployed in hostile or inaccessible environments and are often unattended. These conditions present many challenges in ensuring that WSNs work effectively and survive long enough to fulfil their functionalities. Securing a WSN against any malicious attack is a particular challenge. Due to the limited resources of nodes, traditional routing protocols are not appropriate in WSNs and innovative methods are used to route data from source nodes to sink nodes (base stations). To evaluate the routing protocols against DoS attacks, an innovative design method of combining formal modelling and computer simulations has been proposed. This research has shown that by using formal modelling hidden bugs (e.g. vulnerability to attacks) in routing protocols can be detected automatically. In addition, through a rigorous testing, a new routing protocol, RAEED (Robust formally Analysed protocol for wirEless sEnsor networks Deployment), was developed which is able to operate effectively in the presence of hello flood, rushing, wormhole, black hole, gray hole, sink hole, INA and jamming attacks. It has been proved formally and using computer simulation that the RAEED can pacify these DoS attacks. A second contribution of this thesis relates to the development of a framework to check the vulnerability of different routing protocols against Denial of Service(DoS) attacks. This has allowed us to evaluate formally some existing and known routing protocols against various DoS attacks iand these include TinyOS Beaconing, Authentic TinyOS using uTesla, Rumour Routing, LEACH, Direct Diffusion, INSENS, ARRIVE and ARAN protocols. This has resulted in the development of an innovative and simple defence technique with no additional hardware cost for deployment against wormhole and INA attacks. In the thesis, the detection of weaknesses in INSENS, Arrive and ARAN protocols was also addressed formally. Finally, an e±cient design methodology using a combination of formal modelling and simulation is propose to evaluate the performances of routing protocols against DoS attacks
