Problem-Based Learning to Improve International Student Outcomes
As education systems shift away from disciplinary-specific content and towards the development of skills that are transferable between disciplines, years and stages of life, many schools still note a gap between this desired state and their current reality. Problem-based learning (PBL) is gaining prominence as a method of closing this gap. PBL is grounded in constructionist theory, which believes that students learn best when solving authentic problems through a multi-disciplinary approach and when they have the opportunity to present this learning. This OIP addresses the absence of a school mission-aligned implementation strategy for innovative PBL programming in grades 11 and 12 at an international school in Asia. As a potential solution, it proposes a hybrid of a PBL program and a community-based global learning (CBGL) program that would see students apply these transferable skills to solving authentic problems in the wider community. This is a complex solution and requires several carefully selected frameworks and leadership approaches to achieve it. As an informal leader, I propose a diverse collective leadership approach that harnesses the knowledge and wisdom of a diverse range of stakeholders. This OIP will also embed an Appreciative Inquiry (AI) approach to leverage the success of the current grade 9-10 PBL program, to drive the monitoring and evaluation process and to ensure stakeholders remain connected to the purpose of the change. These approaches are aligned to the school’s mission and grounded in a transformative approach to change, which believes that change should strive to make the world a better and more equitable place

This report illustrates the discussion outcome on digital education within the University of Glasgow School of Education. It is not a strategy document but it does explore the conditions for nurturing digital culture and how these can be channelled into a strategy on digital learning and teaching. The report is based on a review of literature and on a number of local, national and international case study vignettes
The 1990 progress report and future plans
This document describes the progress and plans of the Artificial Intelligence Research Branch (RIA) at ARC in 1990. Activities span a range from basic scientific research to engineering development and to fielded NASA applications, particularly those applications that are enabled by basic research carried out at RIA. Work is conducted in-house and through collaborative partners in academia and industry. Our major focus is on a limited number of research themes with a dual commitment to technical excellence and proven applicability to NASA short, medium, and long-term problems. RIA acts as the Agency's lead organization for research aspects of artificial intelligence, working closely with a second research laboratory at JPL and AI applications groups at all NASA centers
GAIA: Composition, Formation and Evolution of the Galaxy
The GAIA astrometric mission has recently been approved as one of the next
two `cornerstones' of ESA's science programme, with a launch date target of not
later than mid-2012. GAIA will provide positional and radial velocity
measurements with the accuracies needed to produce a stereoscopic and kinematic
census of about one billion stars throughout our Galaxy (and into the Local
Group), amounting to about 1 per cent of the Galactic stellar population.
GAIA's main scientific goal is to clarify the origin and history of our Galaxy,
from a quantitative census of the stellar populations. It will advance
questions such as when the stars in our Galaxy formed, when and how it was
assembled, and its distribution of dark matter. The survey aims for
completeness to V=20 mag, with accuracies of about 10 microarcsec at 15 mag.
Combined with astrophysical information for each star, provided by on-board
multi-colour photometry and (limited) spectroscopy, these data will have the
precision necessary to quantify the early formation, and subsequent dynamical,
chemical and star formation evolution of our Galaxy. Additional products
include detection and orbital classification of tens of thousands of
extra-Solar planetary systems, and a comprehensive survey of some 10^5-10^6
minor bodies in our Solar System, through galaxies in the nearby Universe, to
some 500,000 distant quasars. It will provide a number of stringent new tests
of general relativity and cosmology. The complete satellite system was
evaluated as part of a detailed technology study, including a detailed payload
design, corresponding accuracy assesments, and results from a prototype data

Costs and benefits of superfast broadband in the UK
This paper was commissioned from LSE Enterprise by Convergys Smart Revenue Solutions to stimulate an open and constructive debate among the main stakeholders about the balance between the costs, the revenues, and the societal benefits of ‘superfast’ broadband. The intent has been to analyse the available facts and to propose wider perspectives on economic and social interactions. The paper has two parts: one concentrates on superfast broadband deployment and the associated economic and social implications (for the UK and its service providers), and the other considers alternative social science approaches to these implications. Both parts consider the potential contribution of smart solutions to superfast broadband provision and use. Whereas Part I takes the “national perspective” and the “service provider perspective”, which deal with the implications of superfast broadband for the UK and for service providers, Part II views matters in other ways, particularly by looking at how to realise values beyond the market economy, such as those inherent in neighbourliness, trust and democrac

This whitepaper describes the major IT challenges in scientific research at CERN and several other European and international research laboratories and projects. Each challenge is exemplified through a set of concrete use cases drawn from the requirements of large-scale scientific programs. The paper is based on contributions from many researchers and IT experts of the participating laboratories and also input from the existing CERN openlab industrial sponsors. Walking the talk : an investigation of the pedagogical practices and discourses of an international broadcasting organisation : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Education in Adult Education, Massey University, Manawatu, New Zealand
Increasingly our knowledge of the world around us comes from the media,
mediated by professional broadcasters. As the education and training of
broadcasters has progressively become associated with educational
institutions there has been more theorising about what broadcasters should
know and how they should be educated, however the actual educational
and training practices of broadcasting organisations remains under
researched and under theorised. This research looks at the educational
and training practices of an international broadcasting organisation and
how they are sustained by the organisational ethos through a series of
interviews with people directly involved in the organisation‟s training
practices and an examination of a selection of the organisation‟s
promotional and policy documents. From this comes a picture of an
organisation committed to excellence and also a vision of broadcasting as
an emancipatory activity. This commitment and vision is reflected in its inhouse
training practices and also its media development work. The
interviews with trainers, project managers, administrators and researchers
reveal broadcasters who are pragmatic idealists and reflective practitioners
and whose passion and commitment to the transformative powers of
education and training are undeniable
