A Power-Efficient Methodology for Mapping Applications on Multi-Processor System-on-Chip Architectures
This work introduces an application mapping methodology and case study for multi-processor on-chip architectures. Starting from the description of an application in standard sequential code (e.g. in C), first the application is profiled, parallelized when possible, then its components are moved to hardware implementation when necessary to satisfy performance and power constraints. After mapping, with the use of hardware objects to handle concurrency, the application power consumption can be further optimized by a task-based scheduler for the
remaining software part, without the need for operating system support. The key contributions of this work are: a methodology for high-level hardware/software partitioning that allows the designer to use the same code for both hardware and
software models for simulation, providing nevertheless preliminary estimations for timing and power consumption; and a task-based scheduling algorithm that does not require operating system support. The methodology has been applied to
the co-exploration of an industrial case study: an MPEG4 VGA real-time encoder
On mixed abstraction, languages and simulation approach to refinement with SystemC AMS
Executable specifications and simulations arecornerstone to system design flows. Complex mixed signalembedded systems can be specified with SystemC AMSwhich supports abstraction and extensible models of computation. The language contains semantics for moduleconnections and synchronization required in analog anddigital interaction. Through the synchronization layer, user defined models of computation, solvers and simulators can be unified in the SystemC AMS simulator for achieving low level abstraction and model refinement. These improvements assist in amplifying model aspects and their contribution to the overall system behavior. This work presents cosimulating refined models with timed data flow paradigm of SystemC AMS. The methodology uses Cbased interaction between simulators. An RTL model ofdata encryption standard is demonstrated as an example. The methodology is flexible and can be applied in earlydesign decision trade off, architecture experimentation and particularly for model refinement and critical behavior analysis
Modeling of Hardware and Software for specifying Hardware Abstraction Layers
International audienceIn this paper we describe a practical approach for modeling low level interfaces between software and hardware parts based on SysML operations. This method is intended to be applied for the development of drivers involved on what is classically called the âhardware abstraction layerâ or the âbasic softwareâ which provide high level services for resources management on the top of a bare hardware platform. It is also an enabler for co-design processes since the design of hardware and software can be decoupled. In addition this approach is compatible with virtual prototyping technologies such as SystemC/TLM. An application to a simple a study case is provided for illustration purpose
