    Automatic Tomato and Peduncle Location System Based on Computer Vision for Use in Robotized Harvesting

    Protected agriculture is a field in which the use of automatic systems is a key factor. In fact, the automatic harvesting of delicate fruit has not yet been perfected. This issue has received a great deal of attention over the last forty years, although no commercial harvesting robots are available at present, mainly due to the complexity and variability of the working environments. In this work we developed a computer vision system (CVS) to automate the detection and localization of fruit in a tomato crop in a typical Mediterranean greenhouse. The tasks to be performed by the system are: (1) the detection of the ripe tomatoes, (2) the location of the ripe tomatoes in the XY coordinates of the image, and (3) the location of the ripe tomatoes’ peduncles in the XY coordinates of the image. Tasks 1 and 2 were performed using a large set of digital image processing tools (enhancement, edge detection, segmentation, and the feature’s description of the tomatoes). Task 3 was carried out using basic trigonometry and numerical and geometrical descriptors. The results are very promising for beef and cluster tomatoes, with the system being able to classify 80.8% and 87.5%, respectively, of fruit with visible peduncles as “collectible”. The average processing time per image for visible ripe and harvested tomatoes was less than 30 ms

    Technical Translation: A Translation Proposal for a Photography Guide

    My objective of this thesis is to propose a technical translation from English into Italian of a photography user guide in order to highlight the main challenges a technical translator may face while translating such a complex genre of writing. The source text I have decided to translate is a section taken from David Busch’s Canon EOS 80d Guide to Digital SLR Photography and focused on photography exposure. Explaining the functions of the camera’s basic controls and relating each feature to specific photographic techniques or situations, this guide provides step by step directions to learn how to use this camera properly. My idea for this work was born from both my growing interest in translation and in digital photography, a specialised field which I have always been passionate about. First, I will give a definition of what technical translation is, explaining the difference between Scientific and Technical translation, contrasting some misconceptions about technical translation and proving its importance. In order to understand how translation theory could be useful in technical translation, I will give an overview of some of its approaches and finally, I will deal with the most important features of the technical discourse. Before proposing the actual translation, the second chapter will open with an analysis of the camera user guide, which describes the intended readers, purpose, textual organization, language and register. Subsequently, I will introduce my translation method, based on the creation of a corpus and of a glossary that were used as a reference during the translation process.     Communicating through photographs: a guide for public relations professionals

    The purpose of preparing this guide was to create a resource for public relations professionals to refer to when faced with the task of placing photographs in publications. The assumption is that most public relations professionals are not trained to think visually, partly because their education is focused on writing and virtually ignores aesthetics. Since readership surveys find that people prefer photographs over the written word, and that pictures capture attention quicker than headlines, it is essential that public relations people know how to use visuals to enhance a message. The primary research methods of this study were examination of literature appropriate to the photographic and publishing processes, interviews with experts in the field, and an investigation of electronic resources. The conclusions drawn provide the reader with limited basics of photography, such as how to plan a shoot, how to take a picture and how to submit a photo to the printer. Primarily, this guide is intended to teach public relations professionals how to increase the effectiveness of their publications through the use of important photographic elements such as composition, content and placement

    This dissertation describes efforts towards understanding the surface reactivity and catalytic properties of a promising class of materials, which have the potential to be integrated as part of a solar-fuels device and help usher-in the solar age. Because of their multifunctional behavior, layered transition metal dichalcogenides are potential candidates for not only light absorption in a solar fuels device, but also as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction. We begin in chapter one with an introduction related to global energy sources and trends, highlighting the motivation for the work performed in this dissertation. The second chapter describes a discovery into the interplay of pH and morphology for the hydrogen evolution reaction on MoSe2. This discovery suggested a possibility for a different mechanism for the hydrogen evolution reaction being active in acidic and alkaline media. The third chapter describes an exploration into selective small molecule binding to macroscopic edge sites of MoSe2 and WSe2. The fourth chapter is a study of the protective effects of ALD-TiO2 when grown on a variety of MX2’s. The inert nature of terrace sites in MoSe2 and other MX2’s prevented the growth of a conformal thin film of TiO2 but yielded nanoparticles on the surface instead. Finally, in appendix A, I describe the work performed prior to joining the Lewis group relating to the design and synthesis of a binuclear titanium complex that was explored for its ability to copolymerize olefins and enable the incorporation of polar monomers.</p
