    A Defect-tolerant Cluster in a Mesh SRAM-based FPGA

    International audienceIn this paper, we propose the implementation of multiple defect-tolerant techniques on an SRAM-based FPGA. These techniques include redundancy at both the logic block and intra-cluster interconnect. In the logic block, redundancy is implemented at the multiplexer level. Its efficiency is analyzed by injecting a single defect at the output of a multiplexer, considering all possible locations and input combinations. While at the interconnect level, fine grain redundancy is introduced which not only bypasses defects but also increases routability. Taking advantage of the sparse intra-cluster interconnect structures, routability is further improved by efficient distribution of feedback paths allowing more flexibility in the connections among logic blocks. Emulation results show a significant improvement of about 15% and 34% in the robustness of logic block and intra-cluster interconnect respectively. Furthermore, the impact of these hardening schemes on the testability of the FPGA cluster for manufacturing defects is also investigated in terms of maximum achievable fault coverage and the respective cost

    Tamper-Resistant Arithmetic for Public-Key Cryptography

    Cryptographic hardware has found many uses in many ubiquitous and pervasive security devices with a small form factor, e.g. SIM cards, smart cards, electronic security tokens, and soon even RFIDs. With applications in banking, telecommunication, healthcare, e-commerce and entertainment, these devices use cryptography to provide security services like authentication, identification and confidentiality to the user. However, the widespread adoption of these devices into the mass market, and the lack of a physical security perimeter have increased the risk of theft, reverse engineering, and cloning. Despite the use of strong cryptographic algorithms, these devices often succumb to powerful side-channel attacks. These attacks provide a motivated third party with access to the inner workings of the device and therefore the opportunity to circumvent the protection of the cryptographic envelope. Apart from passive side-channel analysis, which has been the subject of intense research for over a decade, active tampering attacks like fault analysis have recently gained increased attention from the academic and industrial research community. In this dissertation we address the question of how to protect cryptographic devices against this kind of attacks. More specifically, we focus our attention on public key algorithms like elliptic curve cryptography and their underlying arithmetic structure. In our research we address challenges such as the cost of implementation, the level of protection, and the error model in an adversarial situation. The approaches that we investigated all apply concepts from coding theory, in particular the theory of cyclic codes. This seems intuitive, since both public key cryptography and cyclic codes share finite field arithmetic as a common foundation. The major contributions of our research are (a) a generalization of cyclic codes that allow embedding of finite fields into redundant rings under a ring homomorphism, (b) a new family of non-linear arithmetic residue codes with very high error detection probability, (c) a set of new low-cost arithmetic primitives for optimal extension field arithmetic based on robust codes, and (d) design techniques for tamper resilient finite state machines

    A non-intrusive fault tolerant framework for mission critical real-time systems

As testing can only show the presence of errors, not their absence, higher levels of system dependability may be provided by the implementation of mechanisms that can protect the system from faults. We present a framework for the development of fault tolerant mission critical real-time systems that provides a structure for flexible, efficient and deterministic design. The framework leverages three key knowledge domains: firstly, a software concurrency model, the Ada Ravenscar Profile, which guarantees deterministic behavior; secondly, the design of a hardware scheduler, the RavenHaRT kernel, which further provides deadlock free inter-task communication management; and finally, the design of a hardware execution time monitor, the Monitoring Chip, which provides non-intrusive error detection. To increase service dependability, we propose a fault tolerance strategy that uses multiple operating modes to provide system-level handling of timing errors. The hierarchical set of operating modes offers different gracefully degraded levels of guaranteed service.     Operating System Support for Redundant Multithreading

    Failing hardware is a fact and trends in microprocessor design indicate that the fraction of hardware suffering from permanent and transient faults will continue to increase in future chip generations. Researchers proposed various solutions to this issue with different downsides: Specialized hardware components make hardware more expensive in production and consume additional energy at runtime. Fault-tolerant algorithms and libraries enforce specific programming models on the developer. Compiler-based fault tolerance requires the source code for all applications to be available for recompilation. In this thesis I present ASTEROID, an operating system architecture that integrates applications with different reliability needs. ASTEROID is built on top of the L4/Fiasco.OC microkernel and extends the system with Romain, an operating system service that transparently replicates user applications. Romain supports single- and multi-threaded applications without requiring access to the application's source code. Romain replicates applications and their resources completely and thereby does not rely on hardware extensions, such as ECC-protected memory. In my thesis I describe how to efficiently implement replication as a form of redundant multithreading in software. I develop mechanisms to manage replica resources and to make multi-threaded programs behave deterministically for replication. I furthermore present an approach to handle applications that use shared-memory channels with other programs. My evaluation shows that Romain provides 100% error detection and more than 99.6% error correction for single-bit flips in memory and general-purpose registers. At the same time, Romain's execution time overhead is below 14% for single-threaded applications running in triple-modular redundant mode. The last part of my thesis acknowledges that software-implemented fault tolerance methods often rely on the correct functioning of a certain set of hardware and software components, the Reliable Computing Base (RCB). I introduce the concept of the RCB and discuss what constitutes the RCB of the ASTEROID system and other fault tolerance mechanisms. Thereafter I show three case studies that evaluate approaches to protecting RCB components and thereby aim to achieve a software stack that is fully protected against hardware errors

    Fault Injection and Monitoring Capability for a Fault-Tolerant Distributed Computation System

    The Configurable Fault-Injection and Monitoring System (CFIMS) is intended for the experimental characterization of effects caused by a variety of adverse conditions on a distributed computation system running flight control applications. A product of research collaboration between NASA Langley Research Center and Old Dominion University, the CFIMS is the main research tool for generating actual fault response data with which to develop and validate analytical performance models and design methodologies for the mitigation of fault effects in distributed flight control systems. Rather than a fixed design solution, the CFIMS is a flexible system that enables the systematic exploration of the problem space and can be adapted to meet the evolving needs of the research. The CFIMS has the capabilities of system-under-test (SUT) functional stimulus generation, fault injection and state monitoring, all of which are supported by a configuration capability for setting up the system as desired for a particular experiment. This report summarizes the work accomplished so far in the development of the CFIMS concept and documents the first design realization

    Fault tolerant programmable digital attitude control electronics study

    The attitude control electronics mechanization study to develop a fault tolerant autonomous concept for a three axis system is reported. Programmable digital electronics are compared to general purpose digital computers. The requirements, constraints, and tradeoffs are discussed. It is concluded that: (1) general fault tolerance can be achieved relatively economically, (2) recovery times of less than one second can be obtained, (3) the number of faulty behavior patterns must be limited, and (4) adjoined processes are the best indicators of faulty operation
