    A Survey of the Probability Density Function Control for Stochastic Dynamic Systems

    Probability density function (PDF) control strategy investigates the controller design approaches in order to to realise a desirable distributions shape control of the random variables for the stochastic processes. Different from the existing stochastic optimisation and control methods, the most important problem of PDF control is to establish the evolution of the PDF expressions of the system variables. Once the relationship between the control input and the output PDF is formulated, the control objective can be described as obtaining the control input signals which would adjust the system output PDFs to follow the pre-specified target PDFs. This paper summarises the recent research results of the PDF control while the controller design approaches can be categorised into three groups: 1) system model-based direct evolution PDF control; 2) model-based distribution-transformation PDF control methods and 3) databased PDF control. In addition, minimum entropy control, PDF-based filter design, fault diagnosis and probabilistic decoupling design are also introduced briefly as extended applications in theory sense

    Review of selection criteria for sensor and actuator configurations suitable for internal combustion engines

    This literature review considers the problem of finding a suitable configuration of sensors and actuators for the control of an internal combustion engine. It takes a look at the methods, algorithms, processes, metrics, applications, research groups and patents relevant for this topic. Several formal metric have been proposed, but practical use remains limited. Maximal information criteria are theoretically optimal for selecting sensors, but hard to apply to a system as complex and nonlinear as an engine. Thus, we reviewed methods applied to neighboring fields including nonlinear systems and non-minimal phase systems. Furthermore, the closed loop nature of control means that information is not the only consideration, and speed, stability and robustness have to be considered. The optimal use of sensor information also requires the use of models, observers, state estimators or virtual sensors, and practical acceptance of these remains limited. Simple control metrics such as conditioning number are popular, mostly because they need fewer assumptions than closed-loop metrics, which require a full plant, disturbance and goal model. Overall, no clear consensus can be found on the choice of metrics to define optimal control configurations, with physical measures, linear algebra metrics and modern control metrics all being used. Genetic algorithms and multi-criterial optimisation were identified as the most widely used methods for optimal sensor selection, although addressing the dimensionality and complexity of formulating the problem remains a challenge. This review does present a number of different successful approaches for specific applications domains, some of which may be applicable to diesel engines and other automotive applications. For a thorough treatment, non-linear dynamics and uncertainties need to be considered together, which requires sophisticated (non-Gaussian) stochastic models to establish the value of a control architecture

    Soft-bound interval control system and its robust fault-tolerant controller design

    A soft-bound interval control problem is proposed for general non-Gaussian systems with the aim to control the output variable within a bounded region at a specified probability level. To find a feasible solution to this challenging task, the initial soft-bound interval control problem has been transformed into an output probability density function (PDF) tracking control problem with constrained tracking errors, thereby the controller can be designed under the established framework of stochastic distribution control. Fault tolerant control (FTC) is investigated for soft-bound interval control systems in presence of faults. Three fault detection methods are proposed based on criteria extracted from the initial soft-bound control problem and the recast PDF tracking problem. An integrated design for fault estimation and FTC is proposed based on a double proportional integral structure. This integrated FTC design is developed through linear matrix inequality. Extensive simulation studies have been conducted to examine the key design factors, the implementation issues and the effectiveness of the proposed approach

    Meta-heuristic algorithms in car engine design: a literature survey

    Meta-heuristic algorithms are often inspired by natural phenomena, including the evolution of species in Darwinian natural selection theory, ant behaviors in biology, flock behaviors of some birds, and annealing in metallurgy. Due to their great potential in solving difficult optimization problems, meta-heuristic algorithms have found their way into automobile engine design. There are different optimization problems arising in different areas of car engine management including calibration, control system, fault diagnosis, and modeling. In this paper we review the state-of-the-art applications of different meta-heuristic algorithms in engine management systems. The review covers a wide range of research, including the application of meta-heuristic algorithms in engine calibration, optimizing engine control systems, engine fault diagnosis, and optimizing different parts of engines and modeling. The meta-heuristic algorithms reviewed in this paper include evolutionary algorithms, evolution strategy, evolutionary programming, genetic programming, differential evolution, estimation of distribution algorithm, ant colony optimization, particle swarm optimization, memetic algorithms, and artificial immune system

    A brief network analysis of Artificial Intelligence publication

    In this paper, we present an illustration to the history of Artificial Intelligence(AI) with a statistical analysis of publish since 1940. We collected and mined through the IEEE publish data base to analysis the geological and chronological variance of the activeness of research in AI. The connections between different institutes are showed. The result shows that the leading community of AI research are mainly in the USA, China, the Europe and Japan. The key institutes, authors and the research hotspots are revealed. It is found that the research institutes in the fields like Data Mining, Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and some other fields of Machine Learning are quite consistent, implying a strong interaction between the community of each field. It is also showed that the research of Electronic Engineering and Industrial or Commercial applications are very active in California. Japan is also publishing a lot of papers in robotics. Due to the limitation of data source, the result might be overly influenced by the number of published articles, which is to our best improved by applying network keynode analysis on the research community instead of merely count the number of publish.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure

The operation mode of MGs, which can be grid-connected or islanded, employed control strategy and practical limitations of the power electronic converters that are utilized to interface renewable energy sources and the grid, are some of the practical constraints that make fault detection, classification, and coordination in MGs different from legacy grid protection. This article aims to present the state-of-the-art of the latest research and developments, including the challenges and issues in the field of AC MG protection. A broad overview of the available fault detection, fault classification, and fault location techniques for AC MG protection and coordination are presented.     Complex systems involve monitoring, assessing, and predicting the health of various systems within an integrated vehicle health management (IVHM) system or a larger system. Health management applications rely on sensors that generate useful information about the health condition of the assets; thus, optimising the sensor network quality while considering specific constraints is the first step in assessing the condition of assets. The optimisation problem in sensor networks involves considering trade-offs between different performance metrics. This review paper provides a comprehensive guideline for practitioners in the field of sensor optimisation for complex systems. It introduces versatile multi-perspective cost functions for different aspects of sensor optimisation, including selection, placement, data processing and operation. A taxonomy and concept map of the field are defined as valuable navigation tools in this vast field. Optimisation techniques and quantification approaches of the cost functions are discussed, emphasising their adaptability to tailor to specific application requirements. As a pioneering contribution, all the relevant literature is gathered and classified here to further improve the understanding of optimal sensor networks from an information-gain perspective
