    A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers.     A semidefinite relaxation procedure for fault-tolerant observer design

    A fault-tolerant observer design methodology is proposed. The aim is to guarantee a minimum level of closed-loop performance under all possible sensor fault combinations while optimizing performance under the nominal, fault-free condition. A novel approach is proposed to tackle the combinatorial nature of the problem, which is computationally intractable even for a moderate number of sensors, by recasting the problem as a robust performance problem, where the uncertainty set is composed of all combinations of a set of binary variables. A procedure based on an elimination lemma and an extension of a semidefinite relaxation procedure for binary variables is then used to derive sufficient conditions (necessary and sufficient in the case of one binary variable) for the solution of the problem which significantly reduces the number of matrix inequalities needed to solve the problem. The procedure is illustrated by considering a fault-tolerant observer switching scheme in which the observer outputs track the actual sensor fault condition. A numerical example from an electric power application is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the design

    Robust fault detection based on adaptive threshold generation using interval LPV observers

    In this paper, robust fault detection based on adaptive threshold generation of a non-linear system described by means of a linear parameter-varying (LPV) model is addressed. Adaptive threshold is generated using an interval LPV observer that generates a band of predicted outputs taking into account the parameter uncertainties bounded using intervals. An algorithm that propagates the uncertainty based on zonotopes is proposed. The design procedure of this interval LPV observer is implemented via pole placement using linear matrix inequalities. Finally, the minimum detectable fault is characterized using fault sensitivity analysis and residual uncertainty bounds. Two examples, one based on a quadruple-tank system and another based on a two-degree of freedom helicopter, are used to assess the validity of the proposed fault detection approach.Postprint (published version

Viability theory develops mathematical and algorithmic methods for investigating the viability constraints characterisation of dynamic evolutions of complex systems under uncertainty. These methods can be used for checking the consistency between observed and predicted behaviour by using simple sets that approximate the exact set of possible behaviour (in the parameter or state space). In this paper, FDI is based on checking for an inconsistency between the measured and predicted behaviours using viability theory concepts and sets.     Zonotopic fault detection observer design for Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy systems

    This paper considers zonotopic fault detection observer design in the finite-frequency domain for discrete-time Takagi–Sugeno fuzzy systems with unknown but bounded disturbances and measurement noise. We present a novel fault detection observer structure, which is more general than the commonly used Luenberger form. To make the generated residual sensitive to faults and robust against disturbances, we develop a finite-frequency fault detection observer based on generalised Kalman–Yakubovich–Popov lemma and P-radius criterion. The design conditions are expressed in terms of linear matrix inequalities. The major merit of the proposed method is that residual evaluation can be easily implemented via zonotopic approach.     Robust fault diagnosis of proton exchange membrane fuel cells using a Takagi-Sugeno interval observer approach

    In this paper, the problem of robust fault diagnosis of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells is addressed by introducing the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) interval observers that consider uncertainty in a bounded context, adapting TS observers to the so-called interval approach. Design conditions for the TS interval observer based on regional pole placement are also introduced to guarantee the fault detection and isolation (FDI) performance. The fault detection test is based on checking the consistency between the measurements and the output estimations provided by the TS observers. In presence of bounded uncertainty, this check relies on determining if all the measurements lie inside their corresponding estimated interval bounds. When a fault is detected, the measurements that are inconsistent with their corresponding estimations are annotated and a fault isolation procedure is triggered. By using the theoretical fault signature matrix (FSM), which summarizes the effects of the different faults on the available residuals, the fault is isolated by means of a logic reasoning that takes into account the bounded uncertainty, and if the number of candidate faults is more than one, a correlation analysis is used to obtain the most likely fault candidate.     Fault detection for LPV systems using Set-Valued Observers: A coprime factorization approach

    This paper addresses the problem of fault detection for linear parameter-varying systems in the presence of measurement noise and exogenous disturbances. The applicability of current methods is limited in the sense that, to increase accuracy, the detection requires a large number of past measurements and the boundedness of the set-valued estimates is only guaranteed for stable systems. In order to widen the class of systems to be modeled and also to reduce the associated computational cost, the aforementioned issues must be addressed. A solution involving left-coprime factorization and deadbeat observers is proposed in order to reduce the required number of past measurements without compromising accuracy and allowing the design of Set-Valued Observers (SVOs) for fault detection of unstable systems by using the resulting stable subsystems of the coprime factorization. The algorithm is shown to produce bounded set-valued estimates and an example is provided. Performance is assessed through simulations, illustrating, in particular that small-magnitude faults (compared to exogenous disturbances) can be detected under mild assumptions

    Sensor fault diagnosis of singular delayed LPV systems with inexact parameters: an uncertain system approach

    In this paper, sensor fault diagnosis of a singular delayed linear parameter varying (LPV) system is considered. In the considered system, the model matrices are dependent on some parameters which are real-time measurable. The case of inexact parameter measurements is considered which is close to real situations. Fault diagnosis in this system is achieved via fault estimation. For this purpose, an augmented system is created by including sensor faults as additional system states. Then, an unknown input observer (UIO) is designed which estimates both the system states and the faults in the presence of measurement noise, disturbances and uncertainty induced by inexact measured parameters. Error dynamics and the original system constitute an uncertain system due to inconsistencies between real and measured values of the parameters. Then, the robust estimation of the system states and the faults are achieved with H8 performance and formulated with a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). The designed UIO is also applicable for fault diagnosis of singular delayed LPV systems with unmeasurable scheduling variables.
