    CA-BIST for asynchronous circuits: a case study on the RAPPID asynchronous instruction length decoder

    Journal ArticleThis paper presents a case study in low-cost noninvasive Built-In Self Test (BIST) for RAPPID, a largescale 120,000-transistor asynchronous version of the Pentium® Pro Instruction Length Decoder, which runs at 3.6 GHz. RAPPID uses a synchronous 0.25 micron CMOS library for static and domino logic, and has no Design-for-Test hooks other than some debug features. We explore the use of Cellular Automata (CA) for on-chip test pattern generation and response evaluation. More specifically, we look for fast ways to tune the CA-BIST to the RAPPID design, rather than using pseudo-random testing. The metric for tuning the CA-BIST pattern generation is based on an abstract hardware description model of the instruction length decoder, which is independent of implementation details, and hence also independent of the asynchronous circuit style. Our CA-BI ST solution uses a novel bootstrap procedure for generating the test patterns, which give complete coverage for this metric, and cover 94% of the testable stuck-at faults for the actual design at switch level. Analysis of the undetected and untestable faults shows that the same fault effects can be expected for a similar clocked circuit. This is encouraging evidence that testability is no excuse to avoid asynchronous design techniques in addition to high-performance synchronous solutions

    Technology Mapping, Design for Testability, and Circuit Optimizations for NULL Convention Logic Based Architectures

    Delay-insensitive asynchronous circuits have been the target of a renewed research effort because of the advantages they offer over traditional synchronous circuits. Minimal timing analysis, inherent robustness against power-supply, temperature, and process variations, reduced energy consumption, less noise and EMI emission, and easy design reuse are some of the benefits of these circuits. NULL Convention Logic (NCL) is one of the mainstream asynchronous logic design paradigms that has been shown to be a promising method for designing delay-insensitive asynchronous circuits. This dissertation investigates new areas in NCL design and test and is made of three sections. The first section discusses different CMOS implementations of NCL gates and proposes new circuit techniques to enhance their operation. The second section focuses on mapping multi-rail logic expressions to a standard NCL gate library, which is a form of technology mapping for a category of NCL design automation flows. Finally, the last section proposes design for testability techniques for a recently developed low-power variant of NCL called Sleep Convention Logic (SCL)

    Due to the absence of a global clock and presence of more state holding elements that synchronize the control and data paths, conventional automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) algorithms would fail when applied to asynchronous circuits, leading to poor fault coverage. This paper focuses on design for test (DFT) techniques aimed at making asynchronous NCL designs testable using existing DFT CAD tools with reasonable gate overhead, by enhancing controllability of feedback nets and observability for fault sites that are flagged unobservable. The proposed approach performs scan and test points insertion on NCL designs using custom ATPG library. The approach has been automated, which is essential for large systems; and are fully compatible with industry standard tools

    Fsimac: a fault simulator for asynchronous sequential circuits

    Journal ArticleAt very high frequencies, the major potential of asynchronous circuits is absence of clock skew and, through that, better exploitation of relative timing relations. This paper presents Fsimac, a gate-level fault simulator for stuck-at and gate-delay faults in asynchronous sequential circuits. Fsimac not only evaluates combinational logic and typical asynchronous gates such as Muller C-elements, but also complex domino gates, which are widely used in high-speed designs. Our algorithm for detecting feedback loops is designed so as to minimize the iterations for simulating the unfolded circuit. We use min-max timing analysis to compute the bounds on the signal delays. Stuck-at faults are detected by comparing logic values at the primary outputs against the corresponding values in the fault-free design. For delay faults, we additionally compare min-max time stamps for primary output signals. Fault coverage reported by Fsimac for pseudo-random tests generated by Cellular Automata show some very good results, but also indicate test holes for which more specific patterns are needed. We intend to deploy Fsimac for designing more effective CA-BIST

    Conventional automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) algorithms fail when applied to asynchronous NULL convention logic (NCL) circuits due to the absence of a global clock and presence of more state-holding elements, leading to poor fault coverage. This paper presents a design-for-test (DFT) approach aimed at making asynchronous NCL designs testable using conventional ATPG programs. We propose an automatic DFT insertion flow (ADIF) methodology that performs scan and test point insertion on NCL designs to improve test coverage, using a custom ATPG library. Experimental results show significant increase in fault coverage for NCL cyclic and acyclic pipelined designs

    Journal ArticleThis paper describes an investigation of potential advantages and risks of applying an aggressive asynchronous design methodology to Intel Architecture. RAPPID ("Revolving Asynchronous Pentium® Processor Instruction Decoder"), a prototype IA32 instruction length decoding and steering unit, was implemented using self-timed techniques. RAPPID chip was fabricated on a 0.25m CMOS process and tested successfully. Results show significant advantages-in particular, performance of 2.5-4.5 instructions/nS-with manageable risks using this design technology. RAPPID achieves three times the throughput and half the latency, dissipating only half the power and requiring about the same area as an existing 400MHz clocked circuit

    VLSI testing poses a number of problems which includes the selection of test techniques, the determination of acceptable fault coverage levels, and test vector generation. Available device test techniques are examined and compared. Design rules should be employed to assure the design is testable. Logic simulation systems and available test utilities are compared. The various methods of test vector generation are also examined. The selection criteria for test techniques are identified. A table of proposed design rules is included. Testability measurement utilities can be used to statistically predict the test generation effort. Field reject rates and fault coverage are statistically related. Acceptable field reject rates can be achieved with less than full test vector fault coverage. The methods and techniques which are examined form the basis of the recommended integrated test plan.
