    Scalable exploration of 3D massive models

No ámbito da xeración destes modelos, preséntanse métodos para mellorar a adquisición e procesado de escenas reais, grazas a unha implementación eficiente dun sistema out- of- core de xestión de nubes de puntos, e unha nova metodoloxía escalable de fusión de datos de xeometría e cor para adquisicións con oclusións. No ámbito da visualización de grandes conxuntos de datos, que é o núcleo principal desta tese, preséntanse dous novos métodos. O primeiro é unha técnica adaptabile out-of-core que aproveita o hardware de rasterización da GPU e as occlusion queries para crear lotes coherentes de traballo, que serán procesados por kernels de trazado de raios codificados en shaders, permitindo out-of-core ray-tracing con sombreado e iluminación global. O segundo é un método de compresión agresivo que aproveita a redundancia xeométrica que se adoita atopar en grandes modelos 3D para comprimir os datos de forma que caiban, nun formato totalmente renderizable, na memoria da GPU. O método está deseñado para representacións voxelizadas de escenas 3D, que son amplamente utilizadas para diversos cálculos como para acelerar as consultas de visibilidade na GPU. A compresión lógrase fusionando subárbores idénticas a través dunha transformación de similitude, e aproveitando a distribución non homoxénea de referencias a nodos compartidos para almacenar punteiros aos nodos fillo, e utilizando unha codificación de bits variable. A capacidade e o rendemento de todos os métodos avalíanse utilizando diversos casos de uso do mundo real de diversos ámbitos e sectores, incluídos o patrimonio cultural, a enxeñería e os videoxogos.[Resumen] En esta tesis se presentan una serie técnicas escalables que avanzan el estado del arte de la creación y exploración de grandes modelos tridimensionales. En el ámbito de la generación de estos modelos, se presentan métodos para mejorar la adquisición y procesado de escenas reales, gracias a una implementación eficiente de un sistema out-of-core de gestión de nubes de puntos, y una nueva metodología escalable de fusión de datos de geometría y color para adquisiciones con oclusiones. Para la visualización de grandes conjuntos de datos, que constituye el núcleo principal de esta tesis, se presentan dos nuevos métodos. El primero de ellos es una técnica adaptable out-of-core que aprovecha el hardware de rasterización de la GPU y las occlusion queries, para crear lotes coherentes de trabajo, que serán procesados por kernels de trazado de rayos codificados en shaders, permitiendo renders out-of-core avanzados con sombreado e iluminación global. El segundo es un método de compresión agresivo, que aprovecha la redundancia geométrica que se suele encontrar en grandes modelos 3D para comprimir los datos de forma que quepan, en un formato totalmente renderizable, en la memoria de la GPU. El método está diseñado para representaciones voxelizadas de escenas 3D, que son ampliamente utilizadas para diversos cálculos como la aceleración las consultas de visibilidad en la GPU o el trazado de sombras. La compresión se logra fusionando subárboles idénticos a través de una transformación de similitud, y aprovechando la distribución no homogénea de referencias a nodos compartidos para almacenar punteros a los nodos hijo, utilizando una codificación de bits variable. La capacidad y el rendimiento de todos los métodos se evalúan utilizando diversos casos de uso del mundo real de diversos ámbitos y sectores, incluidos el patrimonio cultural, la ingeniería y los videojuegos.[Abstract] This thesis introduces scalable techniques that advance the state-of-the-art in massive model creation and exploration. Concerning model creation, we present methods for improving reality-based scene acquisition and processing, introducing an efficient implementation of scalable out-of-core point clouds and a data-fusion approach for creating detailed colored models from cluttered scene acquisitions. The core of this thesis concerns enabling technology for the exploration of general large datasets. Two novel solutions are introduced. The first is an adaptive out-of-core technique exploiting the GPU rasterization pipeline and hardware occlusion queries in order to create coherent batches of work for localized shader-based ray tracing kernels, opening the door to out-of-core ray tracing with shadowing and global illumination. The second is an aggressive compression method that exploits redundancy in large models to compress data so that it fits, in fully renderable format, in GPU memory. The method is targeted to voxelized representations of 3D scenes, which are widely used to accelerate visibility queries on the GPU. Compression is achieved by merging subtrees that are identical through a similarity transform and by exploiting the skewed distribution of references to shared nodes to store child pointers using a variable bitrate encoding The capability and performance of all methods are evaluated on many very massive real-world scenes from several domains, including cultural heritage, engineering, and gaming

    Real-time rendering of large surface-scanned range data natively on a GPU

    This thesis presents research carried out for the visualisation of surface anatomy data stored as large range images such as those produced by stereo-photogrammetric, and other triangulation-based capture devices. As part of this research, I explored the use of points as a rendering primitive as opposed to polygons, and the use of range images as the native data representation. Using points as a display primitive as opposed to polygons required the creation of a pipeline that solved problems associated with point-based rendering. The problems inves tigated were scattered-data interpolation (a common problem with point-based rendering), multi-view rendering, multi-resolution representations, anti-aliasing, and hidden-point re- moval. In addition, an efficient real-time implementation on the GPU was carried out

    Toward hyper-realistic and interactive social VR experiences in live TV scenarios

This article explores the applicability and potential of Social VR in the broadcast sector, focusing on a live TV show use case. For such a purpose, a novel and lightweight Social VR platform is introduced. The platform provides three key outstanding features compared to state-of-the-art solutions. First, it allows a real-time integration of remote users in shared virtual environments, using realistic volumetric representations and affordable capturing systems, thus not relying on the use of synthetic avatars. Second, it supports a seamless and rich integration of heterogeneous media formats, including 3D scenarios, dynamic volumetric representation of users and (live/stored) stereoscopic 2D and 180º/360º videos. Third, it enables low-latency interaction between the volumetric users and a video-based presenter (Chroma keying), and a dynamic control of the media playout to adapt to the session’s evolution. The production process of an immersive TV show to be able to evaluate the experience is also described. On the one hand, the results from objective tests show the satisfactory performance of the platform.     Creating photo-realistic images has been one of the major goals in computer graphics since its early days. Instead of modeling the complexity of nature with standard modeling tools, image-based approaches aim at exploiting real-world footage directly,as they are photo-realistic by definition. A drawback of these approaches has always been that the composition or combination of different sources is a non-trivial task, often resulting in annoying visible artifacts. In this thesis we focus on different techniques to diminish visible artifacts when combining multiple images in a common image domain. The results are either novel images, when dealing with the composition task of multiple images, or novel video sequences rendered in real-time, when dealing with video footage from multiple cameras.Fotorealismus ist seit jeher eines der großen Ziele in der Computergrafik. Anstatt die Komplexität der Natur mit standardisierten Modellierungswerkzeugen nachzubauen, gehen bildbasierte Ansätze den umgekehrten Weg und verwenden reale Bildaufnahmen zur Modellierung, da diese bereits per Definition fotorealistisch sind. Ein Nachteil dieser Variante ist jedoch, dass die Komposition oder Kombination mehrerer Quellbilder eine nichttriviale Aufgabe darstellt und häufig unangenehm auffallende Artefakte im erzeugten Bild nach sich zieht. In dieser Dissertation werden verschiedene Ansätze verfolgt, um Artefakte zu verhindern oder abzuschwächen, welche durch die Komposition oder Kombination mehrerer Bilder in einer gemeinsamen Bilddomäne entstehen. Im Ergebnis liefern die vorgestellten Verfahren neue Bilder oder neue Ansichten einer Bildsammlung oder Videosequenz, je nachdem, ob die jeweilige Aufgabe die Komposition mehrerer Bilder ist oder die Kombination mehrerer Videos verschiedener Kameras darstellt

    Scalable exploration of highly detailed and annotated 3D models

    With the widespread availability of mobile graphics terminals andWebGL-enabled browsers, 3D graphics over the Internet is thriving. Thanks to recent advances in 3D acquisition and modeling systems, high-quality 3D models are becoming increasingly common, and are now potentially available for ubiquitous exploration. In current 3D repositories, such as Blend Swap, 3D Café or Archive3D, 3D models available for download are mostly presented through a few user-selected static images. Online exploration is limited to simple orbiting and/or low-fidelity explorations of simplified models, since photorealistic rendering quality of complex synthetic environments is still hardly achievable within the real-time constraints of interactive applications, especially on on low-powered mobile devices or script-based Internet browsers. Moreover, navigating inside 3D environments, especially on the now pervasive touch devices, is a non-trivial task, and usability is consistently improved by employing assisted navigation controls. In addition, 3D annotations are often used in order to integrate and enhance the visual information by providing spatially coherent contextual information, typically at the expense of introducing visual cluttering. In this thesis, we focus on efficient representations for interactive exploration and understanding of highly detailed 3D meshes on common 3D platforms. For this purpose, we present several approaches exploiting constraints on the data representation for improving the streaming and rendering performance, and camera movement constraints in order to provide scalable navigation methods for interactive exploration of complex 3D environments. Furthermore, we study visualization and interaction techniques to improve the exploration and understanding of complex 3D models by exploiting guided motion control techniques to aid the user in discovering contextual information while avoiding cluttering the visualization. We demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of our approaches both in large screen museum installations and in mobile devices, by performing interactive exploration of models ranging from 9Mtriangles to 940Mtriangles

    Fusing Multimedia Data Into Dynamic Virtual Environments

    In spite of the dramatic growth of virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) technology, content creation for immersive and dynamic virtual environments remains a significant challenge. In this dissertation, we present our research in fusing multimedia data, including text, photos, panoramas, and multi-view videos, to create rich and compelling virtual environments. First, we present Social Street View, which renders geo-tagged social media in its natural geo-spatial context provided by 360° panoramas. Our system takes into account visual saliency and uses maximal Poisson-disc placement with spatiotemporal filters to render social multimedia in an immersive setting. We also present a novel GPU-driven pipeline for saliency computation in 360° panoramas using spherical harmonics (SH). Our spherical residual model can be applied to virtual cinematography in 360° videos. We further present Geollery, a mixed-reality platform to render an interactive mirrored world in real time with three-dimensional (3D) buildings, user-generated content, and geo-tagged social media. Our user study has identified several use cases for these systems, including immersive social storytelling, experiencing the culture, and crowd-sourced tourism. We next present Video Fields, a web-based interactive system to create, calibrate, and render dynamic videos overlaid on 3D scenes. Our system renders dynamic entities from multiple videos, using early and deferred texture sampling. Video Fields can be used for immersive surveillance in virtual environments. Furthermore, we present VRSurus and ARCrypt projects to explore the applications of gestures recognition, haptic feedback, and visual cryptography for virtual and augmented reality. Finally, we present our work on Montage4D, a real-time system for seamlessly fusing multi-view video textures with dynamic meshes. We use geodesics on meshes with view-dependent rendering to mitigate spatial occlusion seams while maintaining temporal consistency. Our experiments show significant enhancement in rendering quality, especially for salient regions such as faces. We believe that Social Street View, Geollery, Video Fields, and Montage4D will greatly facilitate several applications such as virtual tourism, immersive telepresence, and remote education

    Interactive mixed reality rendering in a distributed ray tracing framework

    The recent availability of interactive ray tracing opened the way for new applications and for improving existing ones in terms of quality. Since today CPUs are still too slow for this purpose, the necessary computing power is obtained by connecting a number of machines and using distributed algorithms. Mixed reality rendering - the realm of convincingly combining real and virtual parts to a new composite scene - needs a powerful rendering method to obtain a photorealistic result. The ray tracing algorithm thus provides an excellent basis for photorealistic rendering and also advantages over other methods. It is worth to explore its abilities for interactive mixed reality rendering. This thesis shows the applicability of interactive ray tracing for mixed (MR) and augmented reality (AR) applications on the basis of the OpenRT framework. Two extensions to the OpenRT system are introduced and serve as basic building blocks: streaming video textures and in-shader AR view compositing. Streaming video textures allow for inclusion of the real world into interactive applications in terms of imagery. The AR view compositing mechanism is needed to fully exploit the advantages of modular shading in a ray tracer. A number of example applications from the entire spectrum of the Milgram Reality-Virtuality continuum illustrate the practical implications. An implementation of a classic AR scenario, inserting a virtual object into live video, shows how a differential rendering method can be used in combination with a custom build real-time lightprobe device to capture the incident light and include it into the rendering process to achieve convincing shading and shadows. Another field of mixed reality rendering is the insertion of real actors into a virtual scene in real-time. Two methods - video billboards and a live 3D visual hull reconstruction - are discussed. The implementation of live mixed reality systems is based on a number of technologies beside rendering and a comprehensive understanding of related methods and hardware is necessary. Large parts of this thesis hence deal with the discussion of technical implementations and design alternatives. A final summary discusses the benefits and drawbacks of interactive ray tracing for mixed reality rendering.Die Verfügbarkeit von interaktivem Ray-Tracing ebnet den Weg für neue Anwendungen, aber auch für die Verbesserung der Qualität bestehener Methoden.
