    Procedural function-based modelling of volumetric microstructures

    We propose a new approach to modelling heterogeneous objects containing internal volumetric structures with size of details orders of magnitude smaller than the overall size of the object. The proposed function-based procedural representation provides compact, precise, and arbitrarily parameterised models of coherent microstructures, which can undergo blending, deformations, and other geometric operations, and can be directly rendered and fabricated without generating any auxiliary representations (such as polygonal meshes and voxel arrays). In particular, modelling of regular lattices and cellular microstructures as well as irregular porous media is discussed and illustrated. We also present a method to estimate parameters of the given model by fitting it to microstructure data obtained with magnetic resonance imaging and other measurements of natural and artificial objects.     Surface Shape Perception in Volumetric Stereo Displays

    In complex volume visualization applications, understanding the displayed objects and their spatial relationships is challenging for several reasons. One of the most important obstacles is that these objects can be translucent and can overlap spatially, making it difficult to understand their spatial structures. However, in many applications, for example medical visualization, it is crucial to have an accurate understanding of the spatial relationships among objects. The addition of visual cues has the potential to help human perception in these visualization tasks. Descriptive line elements, in particular, have been found to be effective in conveying shape information in surface-based graphics as they sparsely cover a geometrical surface, consistently following the geometry. We present two approaches to apply such line elements to a volume rendering process and to verify their effectiveness in volume-based graphics. This thesis reviews our progress to date in this area and discusses its effects and limitations. Specifically, it examines the volume renderer implementation that formed the foundation of this research, the design of the pilot study conducted to investigate the effectiveness of this technique, the results obtained. It further discusses improvements designed to address the issues revealed by the statistical analysis. The improved approach is able to handle visualization targets with general shapes, thus making it more appropriate to real visualization applications involving complex objects

    Journal ArticleToday's part geometries are becoming ever more complex and require more accurate tool path to manufacture. Machining process efficiency is also a major consideration for designers as well as manufacturing engineers. Although the current advanced CAD/CAM systems have greatly improved the efficiency and accuracy of machining with the introduction of Numerically Controlled (NC) machining, excessive material may still be left on the finished part due to machining constraints, including the inaccessibility of the designed part geometry with respect the cutter, machine motion constraints like ramp angles, specific cutting patterns, etc. Polishing operations such as grinding and hand finishing are quite time consuming and expensive and may damage the surface of the part or introduce inaccuracies because of human errors. Although most of the existing machining approaches attempt to reduce such excessive restmaterials by modifying NC tool paths, none of them is satisfactory. They can be time consuming, error prone, computationally intensive, too complicated to implement, and limited to certain problem domains. A compensating cleanup tool path will be developed in this research to automatically remove these excessive material from the finish part. This method greatly reduces the burden of hand finishing and polishing and also reduces the error and complexities introduced in manually generating cleanup tool paths in the shop floor. More important, the tool path generated by this method will reduce the machining time and increase tool life compared with optimized tool path which left no excessive material behind

    Atmospheric cloud representation methods in computer graphics: A review

    Cloud representation is one of the important components in the atmospheric cloud visualization system. Lack of review papers on the cloud representation methods available in the area of computer graphics has directed towards the difficulty for researchers to understand the appropriate solutions. Therefore, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the atmospheric cloud representation methods that have been proposed in the computer graphics domain, involving the classical and the current state-of-the-art approaches. The reviewing process was conducted by searching, selecting, and analyzing the prominent articles collected from online digital libraries and search engines. We highlighted the taxonomic classification of the existing cloud representation methods in solving the atmospheric cloud-related problems. Finally, research issues and directions in the area of cloud representations and visualization have been discussed. This review would be significantly beneficial for researchers to clearly understand the general picture of the existing methods and thus helping them in choosing the best-suited approach for their future research and development

    Single-picture reconstruction and rendering of trees for plausible vegetation synthesis

    State-of-the-art approaches for tree reconstruction either put limiting constraints on the input side (requiring multiple photographs, a scanned point cloud or intensive user input) or provide a representation only suitable for front views of the tree. In this paper we present a complete pipeline for synthesizing and rendering detailed trees from a single photograph with minimal user effort. Since the overall shape and appearance of each tree is recovered from a single photograph of the tree crown, artists can benefit from georeferenced images to populate landscapes with native tree species. A key element of our approach is a compact representation of dense tree crowns through a radial distance map. Our first contribution is an automatic algorithm for generating such representations from a single exemplar image of a tree. We create a rough estimate of the crown shape by solving a thin-plate energy minimization problem, and then add detail through a simplified shape-from-shading approach. The use of seamless texture synthesis results in an image-based representation that can be rendered from arbitrary view directions at different levels of detail. Distant trees benefit from an output-sensitive algorithm inspired on relief mapping. For close-up trees we use a billboard cloud where leaflets are distributed inside the crown shape through a space colonization algorithm. In both cases our representation ensures efficient preservation of the crown shape. Major benefits of our approach include: it recovers the overall shape from a single tree image, involves no tree modeling knowledge and minimal authoring effort, and the associated image-based representation is easy to compress and thus suitable for network streaming.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Automated CNC Tool Path Planning and Machining Simulation on Highly Parallel Computing Architectures

    This work has created a completely new geometry representation for the CAD/CAM area that was initially designed for highly parallel scalable environment. A methodology was also created for designing highly parallel and scalable algorithms that can use the developed geometry representation. The approach used in this work is to move parallel algorithm design complexity from an algorithm level to a data representation level. As a result the developed methodology allows an easy algorithm design without worrying too much about the underlying hardware. However, the developed algorithms are still highly parallel because the underlying geometry model is highly parallel. For validation purposes, the developed methodology and geometry representation were used for designing CNC machine simulation and tool path planning algorithms. Then these algorithms were implemented and tested on a multi-GPU system. Performance evaluation of developed algorithms has shown great parallelizability and scalability; and that main algorithm properties are required for modern highly parallel environment. It was also proved that GPUs are capable of performing work an order of magnitude faster than traditional central processors. The last part of the work demonstrates how high performance that comes with highly parallel hardware can be used for development of a next level of automated CNC tool path planning systems. As a proof of concept, a fully automated tool path planning system capable of generating valid G-code programs for 5-axis CNC milling machines was developed. For validation purposes, the developed system was used for generating tool paths for some parts and results were used for machining simulation and experimental machining. Experimental results have proved from one side that the developed system works. And from another side, that highly parallel hardware brings computational resources for algorithms that were not even considered before due to computational requirements, but can provide the next level of automation for modern manufacturing systems

    Non-destructive quantification of tissue scaffolds and augmentation implants using X-ray microtomography

    A three dimensional (3D), interconnected, porous structure is essential for bone tissue engineering scaffolds and skeletal augmentation implants. Current methods of characterising these structures, however, are limited to average properties such as percentage porosity. More accurate quantitative properties, such as pore and interconnect size distributions, are required. Once measured, these parameters need to be correlated to tissue regeneration and integration criteria, including solute transport, blood vessel regeneration, bone ingrowth, and mechanical properties. Ideally, these techniques would work in vitro and in vivo, and hence allow evaluation of osteoconduction and osseointegration after implantation. This thesis will focus on developing and applying algorithms for use with X-ray microtomography (micro-CT or μCT) which can non-destructively image internal structure at the micron scale. The technique will be demonstrated on two separate materials: bioactive glass scaffolds and titanium (Ti) augmentation devices. Using the developed techniques, the structural and compositional evolutions of bioactive glass scaffolds in a simulated body fluid (SBF) flow environment were quantified using micro-CT scans taken at different dissolution stages. Results show that 70S30C bioactive scaffolds retain favourable 3D structures during a 28 d dissolution experiment, with a modal equivalent pore diameter of 682 μm staying unchanged, and a modal equivalent interconnect diameter decreasing from 252 μm to 209 μm. The techniques were then applied to porous Ti augmentation scaffolds. These scaffolds, produced by selective laser melting have very different pore networks with graded randomness and unit size. They present new challenges when applying the developed micro-CT quantification techniques. Using a further adapted methodology, the interconnecting pore sizes, strut thickness, and surface roughness were measured. This demonstrated the robustness of the methodologies and their applicability to a range of tissue scaffolds and augmentation devices
