Type-II/III DCT/DST algorithms with reduced number of arithmetic operations
We present algorithms for the discrete cosine transform (DCT) and discrete
sine transform (DST), of types II and III, that achieve a lower count of real
multiplications and additions than previously published algorithms, without
sacrificing numerical accuracy. Asymptotically, the operation count is reduced
from ~ 2N log_2 N to ~ (17/9) N log_2 N for a power-of-two transform size N.
Furthermore, we show that a further N multiplications may be saved by a certain
rescaling of the inputs or outputs, generalizing a well-known technique for N=8
by Arai et al. These results are derived by considering the DCT to be a special
case of a DFT of length 4N, with certain symmetries, and then pruning redundant
operations from a recent improved fast Fourier transform algorithm (based on a
recursive rescaling of the conjugate-pair split radix algorithm). The improved
algorithms for DCT-III, DST-II, and DST-III follow immediately from the

Word matching using single closed contours for indexing handwritten historical documents
Effective indexing is crucial for providing convenient access to scanned versions of large collections of historically valuable handwritten manuscripts. Since traditional handwriting recognizers based on optical character recognition (OCR) do not perform well on historical documents, recently a holistic word recognition approach has gained in popularity as an attractive and more straightforward solution (Lavrenko et al. in proc. document Image Analysis for Libraries (DIAL’04), pp. 278–287, 2004). Such techniques attempt to recognize words based on scalar and profile-based features extracted from whole word images. In this paper, we propose a new approach to holistic word recognition for historical handwritten manuscripts based on matching word contours instead of whole images or word profiles. The new method consists of robust extraction of closed word contours and the application of an elastic contour matching technique proposed originally for general shapes (Adamek and O’Connor in IEEE Trans Circuits Syst Video Technol 5:2004). We demonstrate that multiscale contour-based descriptors can effectively capture intrinsic word features avoiding any segmentation of words into smaller subunits. Our experiments show a recognition accuracy of 83%, which considerably exceeds the performance of other systems reported in the literature

from ~2NlogN to ~(17/9)NlogN for a power-of-two transform size N, and the exact
count is strictly lowered for all N > 4. These results are derived by
considering the DCT to be a special case of a DFT of length 8N, with certain

This paper presents a brief overview of past and current hardware acceleration (HwA) approaches that have been proposed for the most computationally intensive compression tools of the MPEG-4 standard. These approaches are classified based on their historical evolution and architectural approach. An analysis of both evolutionary and functional classifications is carried out in order to speculate on the possible trends of the HwA architectures to be employed in mobile video platforms
