Nanoinformatics: developing new computing applications for nanomedicine

Nanoinformatics has recently emerged to address the need of computing applications at the nano level. In this regard, the authors have participated in various initiatives to identify its concepts, foundations and challenges. While nanomaterials open up the possibility for developing new devices in many industrial and scientific areas, they also offer breakthrough perspectives for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. In this paper, we analyze the different aspects of nanoinformatics and suggest five research topics to help catalyze new research and development in the area, particularly focused on nanomedicine. We also encompass the use of informatics to further the biological and clinical applications of basic research in nanoscience and nanotechnology, and the related concept of an extended ?nanotype? to coalesce information related to nanoparticles. We suggest how nanoinformatics could accelerate developments in nanomedicine, similarly to what happened with the Human Genome and other -omics projects, on issues like exchanging modeling and simulation methods and tools, linking toxicity information to clinical and personal databases or developing new approaches for scientific ontologies, among many others

Reviews developments in initial professional education for library and information work in relation to contemporary university library practice in the digital world, with particular reference to the impact of technology on content and delivery. Discusses connections between professional education and library practice, generalist versus specialist programmes and pathways, education for digital library environments and preparation for data management. Concludes that the current trend of locating library education programmes in schools with broader portfolios covering information technology and/or business offers valuable opportunities to extend module choice for students, particularly in relation to the technical skills and understanding needed for digital library environments

Report on the Information Retrieval Festival (IRFest2017)

The Information Retrieval Festival took place in April 2017 in Glasgow. The focus of the workshop was to bring together IR researchers from the various Scottish universities and beyond in order to facilitate more awareness, increased interaction and reflection on the status of the field and its future. The program included an industry session, research talks, demos and posters as well as two keynotes. The first keynote was delivered by Prof. Jaana Kekalenien, who provided a historical, critical reflection of realism in Interactive Information Retrieval Experimentation, while the second keynote was delivered by Prof. Maarten de Rijke, who argued for more Artificial Intelligence usage in IR solutions and deployments. The underlying concept for this thesis is the beginning of discussion overtly looking at how computing technology is used by architects today. The discussion will center around critical analysis of uses of software in processes by designers, how technology may be misunderstood or under appreciated by designers, and how we can maximize our design abilities by using technology to our advantage. In the last 20 years the world has seen a tremendous change in technologies; mobile phones, home computers and the internet all have enabled people to become much more advanced in every field of work. The expediency of new software available to architects grows almost daily, further thickening the misunderstanding of available technologies. With recent development of high-powered and user-friendly software, which promote use of parameterization, 3D modeling and simulations, due to the battle to maintain solvency by architectural firms, the software becomes lost. These conditions, combined with the speed at which designers are expected to produce architectural documents today, lead to a recipe which stifles the architects ability to advantageously use software. IRC Mobile library Services

The evolution of mobile technology allowed the introduction of m-learning. Many institutions have been implementing Digital Library Systems and more specifically m-library (Mobile Library). This report shows how libraries worldwide have been developing websites designed especially for mobile phones and PDA solutions, to enhance the accessibility range of their websites. It describes the Digital Library Systems available in the market, similarities among them and describes the proposed system to be implemented by UTP. Readers will be able to identify the major problems with regards to the IRC PRECISE System and the areas in which following worldwide practices or UTP’s needs the system can provide a more reliable link between IRC and students. This report aims to clarify and emphasize the importance of the development of this project and how relevant it is to the UTP Students Community and also to the IRC Management. The background specifies the scope of work for this project, the purpose and significance. The literature review presents studies that have been conducted in this area, and similar projects developed around the globe. Disrupting Digital Monolingualism: A report on multilingualism in digital theory and practice

This report is about the Disrupting Digital Monolingualism virtual workshop in June 2020. The DDM workshop sought to draw together a wide range of stakeholders active in confronting the current language bias in most of the digital platforms, tools, algorithms, methods, and datasets which we use in our study or practice, and to reverse the powerful impact this bias has on geocultural knowledge dynamics in the wider world. The workshop aimed to describe the state of the art across different academic disciplines and professional fields, and foster collaboration across diverse perspectives around four points of focus: Linguistic and geocultural diversity in digital knowledge infrastructures; Working with multilingual methods and data; Transcultural and translingual approaches to digital study; and Artificial intelligence, machine learning and NLP in language worlds.
