Hardware/software codesign methodology for fuzzy controller implementation
This paper describes a HW/SW codesign methodology
for the implementation of fuzzy controllers on a platform
composed by a general-purpose microcontroller and specific
processing elements implemented on FPGAs or ASICs. The
different phases of the methodology, as well as the CAD tools
used in each design stage, are presented, with emphasis on the
fuzzy system development environment Xfuzzy. Also included is
a practical application of the described methodology for the
development of a fuzzy controller for a dosage system
Implementation of genetic algorithm based fuzzy logic controller with automatic rule extraction in FPGA
A number of fuzzy logic controllers are being designed till now to replace complex, non-linear and huge controlling equipment in numerous industrial sectors. But the designing of these controllers requires thorough knowledge about the controlled process. For this purpose a highly experienced experts are required, which is not feasible all the time. Most of these processes are non-linear and depend on large number of parameters. Thus mathematical representation of these systems is an arduous line of work. This project addresses these problems by proposing using of genetic algorithm based Fuzzy Logic systems as controllers. The system includes algorithms which are run on a capable computing platform, to read an experimental data sheet obtained from experimental observations of the system and generate a fine tuned rule base that is to be used in the fuzzy logic controller hardware. The hardware is implemented in an FPGA. Transfer of synthesized rule base from the computer to the FPGA implementation and crisp output value back to the computer is done by UART. A graphical user interface is provided that runs on the computer
FPGA design methodology for industrial control systems—a review
This paper reviews the state of the art of fieldprogrammable gate array (FPGA) design methodologies with a focus on industrial control system applications. This paper starts with an overview of FPGA technology development, followed by a presentation of design methodologies, development tools and relevant CAD environments, including the use of portable hardware description languages and system level programming/design tools. They enable a holistic functional approach with the major advantage of setting up a unique modeling and evaluation environment for complete industrial electronics systems. Three main design rules are then presented. These are algorithm refinement, modularity, and systematic search for the best compromise between the control performance and the architectural constraints. An overview of contributions and limits of FPGAs is also given, followed by a short survey of FPGA-based intelligent controllers for modern industrial systems. Finally, two complete and timely case studies are presented to illustrate the benefits of an FPGA implementation when using the proposed system modeling and design methodology. These consist of the direct torque control for induction motor drives and the control of a diesel-driven synchronous stand-alone generator with the help of fuzzy logic
A design environment for synthesis of embedded fuzzy controllers on FPGAs
This paper presents a design environment for the
synthesis of embedded fuzzy controllers on FPGAs. It provides
a novel implementation technique that allows accelerating the
exploration of the design space of fuzzy control modules, as
well as a codesign flow that eases their integration into complex
control systems and the joint development of hardware and
software components. The set of CAD tools supporting this
environment includes specific fuzzy logic design tools provided
by Xfuzzy, FPGA synthesis and implementation tools from
Xilinx, and modeling and simulation facilities from Matlab. As
demonstrated by the analyzed design examples, the described
development strategy takes advantage of flexibility and ease of
configuration offered by the different tools to dramatically
speed up the stages of description, synthesis, and functional

A High Performance Fuzzy Logic Architecture for UAV Decision Making
The majority of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in operation today are not truly autonomous, but are instead reliant on a remote human pilot. A high degree of autonomy can provide many advantages in terms of cost, operational resources and safety. However, one of the challenges involved in achieving autonomy is that of replicating the reasoning and decision making capabilities of a human pilot. One candidate method for providing this decision making capability is fuzzy logic. In this role, the fuzzy system must satisfy real-time constraints, process large quantities of data and relate to large knowledge bases. Consequently, there is a need for a generic, high performance fuzzy computation platform for UAV applications. Based on Lees’ [1] original work, a high performance fuzzy processing architecture, implemented in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), has been developed and is shown to outclass the performance of existing fuzzy processors
Modeling and Design of Digital Electronic Systems
The paper is concerned with the modern methodologies for holistic modeling of electronic systems enabling system-on-chip design. The method deals with the functional modeling of complete electronic systems using the behavioral features of Hardware Description Languages or high level languages then targeting programmable devices - mainly Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) - for the rapid prototyping of digital electronic controllers. This approach offers major advantages such as: a unique modeling and evaluation environment for complete power systems, the same environment is used for the rapid prototyping of the digital controller, fast design development, short time to market, a CAD platform independent model, reusability of the model/design, generation of valuable IP, high level hardware/software partitioning of the design is enabled, Concurrent Engineering basic rules (unique EDA environment and common design database) are fulfilled. The recent evolution of such design methodologies is marked through references to case studies of electronic system modeling,simulation, controller design and implementation. FPGA implementation of embedded fuzzy controllers for robotic applications
Fuzzy-logic-based inference techniques provide efficient solutions for control problems in classical and emerging applications. However, the lack of specific design tools and systematic approaches for hardware implementation of complex fuzzy controllers limits the applicability of these techniques in modern microelectronics products. This paper discusses a design strategy that eases the implementation of embedded fuzzy controllers as systems on programmable chips. The development of the controllers is carried out by means of a reconfigurable platform based on field-programmable gate arrays. This platform combines specific hardware to implement fuzzy inference modules with a general-purpose processor, thus allowing the realization of hybrid hardware/soffivare solutions. As happens to the components of the processing system, the specific fuzzy elements are conceived as configurable intellectual property modules in order to accelerate the controller design cycle. The design methodology and tool chain presented in this paper have been applied to the realization of a control system for solving the navigation tasks of an autonomous vehicle
