    Supporting group coherence in a museum visit

    Visiting museums as part of a group poses the challenge of managing engagement with exhibits while preserving group cohesion. We respond to this by reconfiguring the social dynamic of visiting with an experience designed specifically for groups, that invites the group members themselves to design and ‘gift’ interpretations to one another. We present a trial of this experience with groups of family and friends at a museum. We show how groups managed and configured themselves during the visit, revealing the strategies involved in maintaining different group behaviors. We discuss how our design accommodated different visiting styles by making objects social and scaffolding rather than directing the group experience. We interpret our findings to frame group coherence as a flexible and configurable phenomenon within CSCW

    Measuring interaction proxemics with wearable light tags

    The proxemics of social interactions (e.g., body distance, relative orientation) in!uences many aspects of our everyday life: from patients’ reactions to interaction with physicians, successes in job interviews, to effective teamwork. Traditionally, interaction proxemics has been studied via questionnaires and participant observations, imposing high burden on users, low scalability and precision, and often biases. In this paper we present Protractor, a novel wearable technology for measuring interaction proxemics as part of non-verbal behavior cues with# ne granularity. Protractor employs near-infrared light to monitor both the distance and relative body orientation of interacting users. We leverage the characteristics of near-infrared light (i.e., line-of-sight propagation) to accurately and reliably identify interactions; a pair of collocated photodiodes aid the inference of relative interaction angle and distance. We achieve robustness against temporary blockage of the light channel (e.g., by the user’s hand or clothes) by designing sensor fusion algorithms that exploit inertial sensors to obviate the absence of light tracking results. We fabricated Protractor tags and conducted real-world experiments. Results show its accuracy in tracking body distances and relative angles. The framework achieves less than 6 error 95% of the time for measuring relative body orientation and 2.3-cm – 4.9-cm mean error in estimating interaction distance. We deployed Protractor tags to track user’s non-verbal behaviors when conducting collaborative group tasks. Results with 64 participants show that distance and angle data from Protractor tags can help assess individual’s task role with 84.9% accuracy, and identify task timeline with 93.2% accuracy

    Notes on narrative, cognition, and cultural evolution

    Drawing on non-Darwinian cultural-evolutionary approaches, the paper develops a broad, non-representational perspective on narrative, necessary to account for the narrative “ubiquity” hypothesis. It considers narrativity as a feature of intelligent behaviour and as a formative principle of symbolic representation (“narrative proclivity”). The narrative representation retains a relationship with the “primary” pre-symbolic narrativity of the basic orientational-interpretive (semiotic) behaviour affected by perceptually salient objects and “fits” in natural environments. The paper distinguishes between implicit narrativity (as the basic form of perceptual-cognitive mapping) of intelligent behaviour or non-narrative media, and the “narrative” as a symbolic representation. Human perceptual-attentional routines are enhanced by symbolic representations: due to its attention-monitoring and information-gathering function, narrative serves as a cognitive-exploratory tool facilitating cultural dynamics. The rise of new media and mass communication on the Web has thrown the ability of narrative to shape the public sphere through the ongoing process of negotiated sensemaking and interpretation in a particularly sharp relief

    Applied Analysis and Synthesis of Complex Systems: Proceedings of the IIASA-Kyoto University Joint Seminar, June 28-29, 2004

    This two-day seminar aimed at introducing the new development of the COE by Kyoto University to IIASA and discussing general modeling methodologies for complex systems consisting of many elements, mostly via nonlinear, large-scale interactions. We aimed at clarifying fundamental principles in complex phenomena as well as utilizing and synthesizing the knowledge derived out of them. The 21st Century COE (Center of Excellence) Program is an initiative by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MEXT) to support universities establishing discipline-specific international centers for education and research, and to enhance the universities to be the world's apex of excellence with international competitiveness in the specific research areas. Our program of "Research and Education on Complex Functional Mechanical Systems" is successfully selected to be awarded the fund for carrying out new research and education as Centers of Excellence in the field of mechanical engineering in 2003 (five-year project), and is expected to lead Japanese research and education, and endeavor to be the top in the world. The program covers general backgrounds in diverse fields as well as a more in-depth grasp of specific branches such as complex system modeling and analysis of the problems including: nonlinear dynamics, micro-mesoscopic physics, turbulent transport phenomena, atmosphere-ocean systems, robots, human-system interactions, and behaviors of nano-composites and biomaterials. Fundamentals of those complex functional mechanical systems are macroscopic phenomena of complex systems consisting of microscopic elements, mostly via nonlinear, large-scale interactions, which typically present collective behavior such as self-organization, pattern formation, etc. Such phenomena can be observed or created in every aspect of modern technologies. Especially, we are focusing upon; turbulent transport phenomena in climate modeling, dynamical and chaotic behaviors in control systems and human-machine systems, and behaviors of mechanical materials with complex structures. As a partial attainment of this program, IIASA and Kyoto University have exchanged Consortia Agreement at the beginning of the program in 2003, and this seminar was held to introduce the outline of the COE program of Kyoto University to IIASA researchers and to deepen the shared understandings on novel complex system modeling and analysis, including novel climate modeling and carbonic cycle management, through joint academic activities by mechanical engineers and system engineers. In this seminar, we invited a distinguished researcher in Europe as a keynote speaker and our works attained so far in the project were be presented by the core members of the project as well as by the other contributing members who participated in the project. All IIASA research staff and participants of YSSP (Young Scientist Summer Program) were cordially invited to attend this seminar to discuss general modeling methodologies for complex systems
