Fast recursive filters for simulating nonlinear dynamic systems
A fast and accurate computational scheme for simulating nonlinear dynamic
systems is presented. The scheme assumes that the system can be represented by
a combination of components of only two different types: first-order low-pass
filters and static nonlinearities. The parameters of these filters and
nonlinearities may depend on system variables, and the topology of the system
may be complex, including feedback. Several examples taken from neuroscience
are given: phototransduction, photopigment bleaching, and spike generation
according to the Hodgkin-Huxley equations. The scheme uses two slightly
different forms of autoregressive filters, with an implicit delay of zero for
feedforward control and an implicit delay of half a sample distance for
feedback control. On a fairly complex model of the macaque retinal horizontal
cell it computes, for a given level of accuracy, 1-2 orders of magnitude faster
than 4th-order Runge-Kutta. The computational scheme has minimal memory
requirements, and is also suited for computation on a stream processor, such as
a GPU (Graphical Processing Unit).Comment: 20 pages, 8 figures, 1 table. A comparison with 4th-order Runge-Kutta
integration shows that the new algorithm is 1-2 orders of magnitude faster.

Throughput Scaling Of Convolution For Error-Tolerant Multimedia Applications
Convolution and cross-correlation are the basis of filtering and pattern or
template matching in multimedia signal processing. We propose two throughput
scaling options for any one-dimensional convolution kernel in programmable
processors by adjusting the imprecision (distortion) of computation. Our
approach is based on scalar quantization, followed by two forms of tight
packing in floating-point (one of which is proposed in this paper) that allow
for concurrent calculation of multiple results. We illustrate how our approach
can operate as an optional pre- and post-processing layer for off-the-shelf
optimized convolution routines. This is useful for multimedia applications that
are tolerant to processing imprecision and for cases where the input signals
are inherently noisy (error tolerant multimedia applications). Indicative
experimental results with a digital music matching system and an MPEG-7 audio
descriptor system demonstrate that the proposed approach offers up to 175%
increase in processing throughput against optimized (full-precision)
convolution with virtually no effect in the accuracy of the results. Based on
marginal statistics of the input data, it is also shown how the throughput and
distortion can be adjusted per input block of samples under constraints on the
signal-to-noise ratio against the full-precision convolution.Comment: IEEE Trans. on Multimedia, 201

1 V CMOS subthreshold log domain PDM
A new CMOS circuit strategy for very low-voltage Pulse-Duration Modulators (PDM) is proposed. Optimization of voltage supply scaling below the sum of threshold voltages is based on Instantaneous Log Companding processing through the MOSFET operating in weak inversion. A 1 V VLSI PDM circuit for very low-voltage audio applications such as Hearing Aids is presented, showing good agreement between simulated and experimental data.Comisión Interministerial de Ciencia y Tecnología TIC97-1159, TIC99-1084European Union 2306
Mixed-signal CNN array chips for image processing
Due to their local connectivity and wide functional capabilities, cellular nonlinear networks (CNN) are excellent candidates for the implementation of image processing algorithms using VLSI analog parallel arrays. However, the design of general purpose, programmable CNN chips with dimensions required for practical applications raises many challenging problems to analog designers. This is basically due to the fact that large silicon area means large development cost, large spatial deviations of design parameters and low production yield. CNN designers must face different issues to keep reasonable enough accuracy level and production yield together with reasonably low development cost in their design of large CNN chips. This paper outlines some of these major issues and their solutions

Two-dimensional optical processing using one-dimensional input devices
Two-dimensional optical processing architectures that are implemented with one-dimensional input spatial light modulators are reviewed. The advanced state of the art of available one-dimensional devices and the flexibility that exists in the design of two-dimensional architectures with one-dimensional transducers leads to the implementation of the most powerful and versatile optical processors. Signal and image processing architectures of this type are discussed
Analog CMOS implementation of cellular neural networks
Cataloged from PDF version of article. The analog CMOS circuit realization of cellular neural networks with transconductance elements is presented. This realization can be easily adapted to various types of applications in image processing just by choosing the appropriate transconductance parameters according to the predetermined coefficients. The effectiveness of the designed circuits for connected component detection is shown by HSPICE simulations. For 'fixed function' cellular neural network circuits the number of transistors are reduced further by using multi-input transconductance elements
