    Annotation of Toponyms in TEI Digital Literary Editions and Linking to the Web of Data

    International audienceThis paper aims to discuss the challenges and benefits of the annotation of place names in literary texts and literary criticism. We shall first highlight the problems of encoding spatial information in digital editions using the TEI format by means of two manual annotation experiments and the discussion of various cases. This will lead to the question of how to use existing semantic web resources to complement and enrich toponym markup , in particular to provide mentions with precise geo-referencing. Finally the automatic annotation of a large corpus will show the potential of visualizing places from texts, by illustrating an analysis of the evolution of literary life from the spatial and geographical point of view.Este artigo aborda as dificuldades e as vantagens da anotação dos nomes de lugar em textos literários e de crítica literária. Começamos por realçar os problemas de codifi-cação da informação espacial em edições digitais usando o formato TEI, através de duas experiências de anotação manual e da análise de diversos casos. Isto conduzirá à questão de como utilizar os recursos da web semântica para complementar e enrique-cer a marcação de topónimos, em particular com georreferenciação rigorosa. Por último, a anotação automática de um grande corpus irá mostrar o potencial de visuali-zação de locais a partir de textos, ilustrando a análise da evolução da vida literária segundo um ponto de vista espacial e geográfico.     Geospatial Analysis and Modeling of Textual Descriptions of Pre-modern Geography

    Textual descriptions of pre-modern geography offer a different view of classical geography. The descriptions have been produced when none of the modern geographical concepts and tools were available. In this dissertation, we study pre-modern geography by primarily finding the existing structures of the descriptions and different cases of geographical data. We first explain four major geographical cases in pre-modern Arabic sources: gazetteer, administrative hierarchies, routes, and toponyms associated with people. Focusing on hierarchical divisions and routes, we offer approaches for manual annotation of administrative hierarchies and route sections as well as a semi-automated toponyms annotation. The latter starts with a fuzzy search of toponyms from an authority list and applies two different extrapolation models to infer true or false values, based on the context, for disambiguating the automatically annotated toponyms. Having the annotated data, we introduce mathematical models to shape and visualize regions based on the description of administrative hierarchies. Moreover, we offer models for comparing hierarchical divisions and route networks from different sources. We also suggest approaches to approximate geographical coordinates for places that do not have geographical coordinates - we call them unknown places - which is a major issue in visualization of pre-modern places on map. The final chapter of the dissertation introduces the new version of al-Ṯurayyā, a gazetteer and a spatial model of the classical Islamic world using georeferenced data of a pre-modern atlas with more than 2, 000 toponyms and routes. It offers search, path finding, and flood network functionalities as well as visualizations of regions using one of the models that we describe for regions.     Reconstructing the Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Daily Life in the 19th Century City: A Historical GIS Approach

    In recent years, historians and historical geographers have become interested in the use of GIS to study historical patterns, populations, and phenomena. The result has been the emergence of a new discipline, historical GIS. Despite the growing use of GIS across geography and history, the use of GIS in historical research has been limited largely to visualization of historical records, database management, and simple pattern analysis. This is, in part, due to a lack of accessible research on methodologies and spatial frameworks that outline the integration of both quantitative and qualitative historical sources for use in a GIS environment. The first objective of this dissertation is to develop a comprehensive geospatial research framework for the study of past populations and their environments. The second objective of this dissertation is to apply this framework to the study of daily life in the nineteenth-century city, an important area of scholarship for historical geographers and social historians. Other daily life studies have focused on various experiences of daily life, from domestic duties and child rearing to social norms and the experience of work in early factories. An area that has received little attention in recent years is the daily mobility of individuals as they moved about the ‘walking city’. This dissertation advances our understanding of the diurnal patterns of daily life by recreating the journey to work for thousands of individuals in the city of London, Ontario, and its suburbs in the late nineteenth century. Methodologies are created to capture past populations, their workplaces, and their relationship to the environments they called home. Empirical results outline the relationship between social class, gender, and the journey to work, as well as how social mobility was reflected through the quality of individuals’ residential and neighbourhood environments. The results provide a new perspective on daily mobility, social mobility, and environment in the late nineteenth-century city. Results suggest that individuals who were able to be upwardly socially mobile did so at the expense of substantial increases in their journey to work

    Parsing Perceptions of Place: Locative and Textual Representations of Place Émilie-Gamelin on Twitter

    We increasingly engage in geographies mediated by social media, which is changing how we experience and produce places. This raises questions about how ‘place’ is conceived and received in networked virtual spaces. Place has remained difficult to grasp in both geography and communications studies that utilize social media data. To attend to this, I first develop a conceptual framework that bridges the phenomenology of spatiality with the communication of place. I then present a case study of Place Émilie-Gamelin in Montreal: a plaza located atop the city’s busiest transit hub. Despite its geographic centrality, it is a liminal space appropriated by marginalized groups and contentious political movements. Since 2015, it has been subject to a city-led revitalization program with intentions of attracting party-goers and tourists. Using a communications geography framework, I collected a year’s worth of tweets, first, employing a filter to capture georeferenced tweets in and around the study site, and second, using the site’s toponyms to retrieve tweets through textual queries. To understand these representations, I coded them by relevance, theme and communicative function. Results showed a place evolving in scope, name and meaning, reflecting diverging flows and uses. I found that there were more textual connotations of the study site than there were geotweets, and that the former were more diverse in their representation of place. The thesis demonstrates how promotional content on Twitter should be more critically analyzed in concert with expressive and descriptive tweets and geotweets, and that this implies spatial ontologies and data collection methods that consider a place on social media as a discursive construction. This is especially so since Twitter has become increasingly ‘platial’ through internal changes and its entwinement with other social media platforms: changes which require consideration in all Twitter-based spatial and textual analyses. The study provides an updated perspective on Twitter’s use in the spatial humanities, GIScience and geography and contributes to those interested in applying more nuanced cartographies of places

    The codification of local knowledges through digital cartographic artefacts: A Case study of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

    The Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, affectionately known as HOT, worked on mapping the city of Dar es Salaam between 2014 and 2020. The efforts of HOT were designed to not only build a map of the city that would ‘put people on the map’, but to also use these maps to aid in development and humanitarian interventions through one of Africa’s fastest growing cities, all while using participatory mapping practices. This thesis examines the extent to which HOT has been able to achieve the creation of a new map of Dar es Salaam, the influence this map had on development projects, and the degree to which the map was built using participatory methods. The research undertook a deep analysis of map completion and accuracy and used interviews to explore the interplay between technology and micro/macro politics around the mapping of Dar es Salaam. Findings suggest that HOT is still underdeveloped as an organization and lacks the maturity to create true participatory models of working. That many of their practices were exclusionary to the local population and that weak management structures and procedures allowed colonial and ‘outsider’ saviour complexes to grow within the organisation. The work concludes by noting that HOT has begun to change many of its practices since 2020 where this research ends

    Buzz and the Creative City: Traversing Atmospheres of the Urban Creative & Cultural Industries in Leeds

    ‘Buzz’ isn’t an unknown term in Creative and Cultural Industries scholarship, though it has received little by way of targeted investigation. This thesis, which uses ethnographic and autoethnographic approaches, explores the atmospheric terrain of Buzz as related to the Creative and Cultural Industries in the city of Leeds, UK. It is underpinned by original empirical research, namely both the audio and GPS data of ‘walking interviews’, with sixteen Leeds-based Creative and Cultural sector workers. Developed through the transdisciplinary lens of Geohumanities, a constellation of disciplines and methods that approach the human meanings of place, a new conceptualisation of Buzz is advanced that demonstrates the efficacy of the perceptual, experiential, and sensate space of the city on the Creative and Cultural Industries. Multiple new concepts are developed; Firstly, ‘The Layered City’ conceptualises different strata of urban space based upon various issues of access and openness, up to and including an atmospheric realm. Secondly, ‘The Buzz Cycle’ conceptualises the myriad cyclical dynamics and reciprocities of people and place within a given Creative and Cultural Industries milieu, and thirdly, ‘The Buzz Ecology’ conceptualises the wider city which is its context. In demonstrating the crucial micro-geographies and subjectivities of the individual, this thesis configures the milieu of the Creative City, and the experience of its Buzz, as an individualised and subjective, as well as collectivised and objective, terrain. In so doing, it meaningfully expands upon existing scholarship by advancing current knowledge into the role that place plays for the sectors, to newly include the intangible experiencing of the atmospheric terrain of Buzz in tandem with the more readily understood and scrutinised terra firma of the city
