    Exploring Technology and Task Adaptation Among Individual Users of Mobile Technology

    IS research often focuses on the contributions of information systems to organizational productivity. The task-technology fit theory proposes a positive contribution to performance when there is a good fit between the technology and the task. The fit appropriation model further proposes that the relationship between fit and performance is moderated by the user’s appropriation of the technology. This research extends these theories by investigating the role of adaptation in the fit between task and technology. Prior research has modeled adaptation as a single construct encompassing task, technology and the individual, which does not allow for an understanding of the relationship among these items. We propose that adaptation should be measured as two distinct constructs. We develop and validate a scale to measure task adaptation and technology adaption and find support for task adaption as a mediator of the effects of technology adaptation on performance

    INDIVIDUAL INFUSION OF M-HEALTH TECHNOLOGIES: DETERMINANTS AND OUTCOMES

    Despite substantial research on IT implementation in the IS field, the healthcare industry has historically been considered a technological laggard and lacks direction for how to successfully infuse new technological innovations within individuals work practices. Theoretically, mobile-health (m-health) technologies, if infused in work practices can potentially enhance the quality of healthcare delivery. The question remains as to whether practitioners\u27 performance significantly improves and individual knowledge is enhanced through the infusion of these technologies. While a significant amount of extant literature focuses on initial technology adoption and acceptance, there remains a dearth of literature in the IS field focusing on the long term utilisation and associated benefits. This paper addresses this gap in extant literature through the development and testing of a conceptual model, exploring determinants of individual infusion of m-health technologies and their subsequent outcomes. This study reveals (a) key enablers of successful mobile infusion in a healthcare context and that successful infusion is determined by the characteristics of the: 1. technology 2. user and 3. task, (b) Infusion of mobile technologies leads to improvements in preventative care, greater decision making and reduced medical errors and, (c) Individuals perceive that knowledge is presented rather than created through mobile technologies

    Email adaptation for conflict handling:A case study of cross‐border inter‐organisational partnership in East Asia

    This paper explores the context of email-based communication in an established but fragile, inter-organisational partnership, which was often overlain with conflict. Drawing upon adaptation theory, this study explores how participants adapt to the use of email to handle conflict. Extensive data were obtained during a 6-month field study of a case of cross-border inter-organisational collaboration in East Asia. We observed that the individuals involved in the cross-border partnership used email as a lean form of communication to stop covert conflict from explicitly emerging. In contrast to prior research on the leanness of email in managing conflict, we found that under the described conflict situation the very leanness of email was appreciated and thus, exploited by those concerned to manage the conflict situation. Specifically, we identified 4 key conflict-triggered adaptation strategies, namely, interaction avoidance, disempowering, blame-protection, and image-sheltering that drove the ways in which email was adapted to maintain organisational partnerships under conflict

    Understanding User Adaptation toward a New IT System in Organizations: A Social Network Perspective

    Social networks can be a vital mechanism for users to adapt to changes induced by new IT systems in organizations. However, we do not adequately understand the effect of social networks on post-adoption IT use. Drawing on coping theory and the social network literature, we develop a cognitive-affective-behavioral classification of user adaptation and identify seeking-network closure and giving-network closure as key network characteristics pertinent to post-adoption IT use. Thereafter, we establish a theoretical link from seeking-network closure and giving-network closure to post-adoption IT use through the underlying mechanisms of user adaptation. We operationalize the research model using a field survey of a newly implemented electronic medical record system in a hospital in Northeast China, where we collected network data and objective system logs of 104 doctors. We found that seeking-network closure was positively associated with cognitive adaptation but negatively associated with affective adaptation and behavioral adaptation, whereas giving-network closure was negatively associated with cognitive adaptation but positively associated with affective adaptation and behavioral adaptation. Moreover, cognitive adaptation and affective adaptation were determinants of post-adoption IT use, but behavioral adaptation was not. We discuss our study’s theoretical and practical contributions

    The committees under IFIP include the Technical Committee TC13 on Human – Computer Interaction within which the work of this volume has been conducted. TC 13 on Human-Computer Interaction has as its aim to encourage theoretical and empirical human science research to promote the design and evaluation of human-oriented ICT. Within TC 13 there are different Working Groups concerned with different aspects of Human-Computer Interaction. The flagship event of TC13 is the bi-annual international conference called INTERACT at which both invited and contributed papers are presented. Contributed papers are rigorously refereed and the rejection rate is high. Publications arising from these TC13 events are published as conference proceedings such as the INTERACT proceedings or as collections of selected and edited papers from working conferences and workshops.     Examining the post-adoptive infusion of mobile technology in a healthcare domain: determinants and outcomes

    The healthcare industry is beginning to appreciate the benefits which can be obtained from using Mobile Health Systems (MHS) at the point-of-care. As a result, healthcare organisations are investing heavily in mobile health initiatives with the expectation that users will employ the system to enhance performance. Despite widespread endorsement and support for the implementation of MHS, empirical evidence surrounding the benefits of MHS remains to be fully established. For MHS to be truly valuable, it is argued that the technological tool be infused within healthcare practitioners work practices and used to its full potential in post-adoptive scenarios. Yet, there is a paucity of research focusing on the infusion of MHS by healthcare practitioners. In order to address this gap in the literature, the objective of this study is to explore the determinants and outcomes of MHS infusion by healthcare practitioners. This research study adopts a post-positivist theory building approach to MHS infusion. Existing literature is utilised to develop a conceptual model by which the research objective is explored. Employing a mixed-method approach, this conceptual model is first advanced through a case study in the UK whereby propositions established from the literature are refined into testable hypotheses. The final phase of this research study involves the collection of empirical data from a Canadian hospital which supports the refined model and its associated hypotheses. The results from both phases of data collection are employed to develop a model of MHS infusion. The study contributes to IS theory and practice by: (1) developing a model with six determinants (Availability, MHS Self-Efficacy, Time-Criticality, Habit, Technology Trust, and Task Behaviour) and individual performance-related outcomes of MHS infusion (Effectiveness, Efficiency, and Learning), (2) examining undocumented determinants and relationships, (3) identifying prerequisite conditions that both healthcare practitioners and organisations can employ to assist with MHS infusion, (4) developing a taxonomy that provides conceptual refinement of IT infusion, and (5) informing healthcare organisations and vendors as to the performance of MHS in post-adoptive scenarios
