Web 2.0 and micro-businesses: An exploratory investigation

Emerald does not grant permission for this article to be further copied/distributed or hosted elsewhere without the express permission from Emerald Group Publishing Limited.This article was chosen as a Highly Commended Award Winner at the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence 2013.Purpose â The paper aims to report on an exploratory study into how small businesses use Web 2.0 information and communication technologies (ICT) to work collaboratively with other small businesses. The study had two aims: to investigate the benefits available from the use of Web 2.0 in small business collaborations, and to characterize the different types of such online collaborations.
Design/methodology/approach â The research uses a qualitative case study methodology based on semi-structured interviews with the owner-managers of 12 UK-based small companies in the business services sector who are early adopters of Web 2.0 technologies.
Findings â Benefits from the use of Web 2.0 are categorized as lifestyle benefits, internal operational efficiency, enhanced capability, external communications and enhanced service offerings. A 2Ă2 framework is developed to categorize small business collaborations using the dimensions of the basis for inter-organizational collaboration (control vs cooperation) and the level of Web 2.0 ICT use (simple vs sophisticated).
Research limitations/implications â A small number of firms of similar size, sector and location were studied, which limits generalizability. Nonetheless, the results offer a pointer to the likely future use of Web 2.0 tools by other small businesses.
Practical implications â The research provides evidence of the attraction and potential of Web 2.0 for collaborations between small businesses.
Originality/value â The paper is one of the first to report on use of Web 2.0 ICT in collaborative working between small businesses. It will be of interest to those seeking a better understanding of the potential of Web 2.0 in the small business community.WestFocu
Social movements in world of warcraft
Virtual worlds provide new forms of social interaction. They offer alternative spaces where social functions can be carried out in online three-dimensional virtual environments. In this paper we explore how collective action on a global scale is enabled by these virtual worlds. We used qualitative research to examine the organization of one social movement in World of Warcraft (WoW), the most widely used massively multiplayer online role playing game in the world. Academicsâ online connections: Characterising the structure of personal networks on academic social networking sites and Twitter
Academic social networking sites (SNS), such as Academia.edu and ResearchGate, seek to bring the benefits of online social networking to academics' professional lives. Online academic social networking offers the potential to revolutionise academic publishing, foster novel collaborations, and empower academics to develop their professional identities online. However, the role that such sites play in relation to academic practice and other social media is not well understood at present.
Arguably, the defining characteristic of academic social networking sites is the connections formed between profiles (in contrast to the traditional static academic homepage, for example). The social network of connections fostered by SNSs occupies an interesting space in relation to online identity, being both an attribute of an individual and shaped by the social context they are embedded within. As such, personal network structures may reflect an expression of identity (as "public displays of connection" (Donath & boyd, 2004) or "relational self portraits[s]" (Hogan & Wellman, 2014)), while social capital has been linked to network structures (Crossley et al., 2015). Network structure may therefore have implications for the types of roles that a network can play in professional life. What types of network structures are being fostered by academic SNS and how do they relate to academics' development of an online identity?
This presentation will discuss findings from a project which has used a mixed-methods social network analysis approach to analyse academics' personal networks online. The personal networks of 55 academics (sampled from survey participants, to reflect a range of disciplines and job positions) on both one academic SNS (either Academia.edu or ResearchGate) and Twitter were collected and analysed. Differences in network structure emerged according to platform, with Twitter networks being larger and less dense, while academic SNS networks were smaller and more highly clustered. There were differences between academic SNS and Twitter in the brokerage positions occupied by the participant. The results are discussed in relation to other salient studies relating network structure in online social networks to social capital, and implications for academic practice. Evolutionary Subject Tagging in the Humanities; Supporting Discovery and Examination in Digital Cultural Landscapes
In this paper, the authors attempt to identify problematic issues for subject tagging in the humanities, particularly those associated with information objects in digital formats. In the third major section, the authors identify a number of assumptions that lie behind the current practice of subject classification that we think should be challenged. We move then to propose features of classification systems that could increase their effectiveness. These emerged as recurrent themes in many of the conversations with scholars, consultants, and colleagues. Two Types of Social Grooming Methods depending on the Trade-off between the Number and Strength of Social Relationships
Humans use various social bonding methods known as social grooming, e.g. face
to face communication, greetings, phone, and social networking sites (SNS). SNS
have drastically decreased time and distance constraints of social grooming. In
this paper, I show that two types of social grooming (elaborate social grooming
and lightweight social grooming) were discovered in a model constructed by
thirteen communication data-sets including face to face, SNS, and Chacma
baboons. The separation of social grooming methods is caused by a difference in
the trade-off between the number and strength of social relationships. The
trade-off of elaborate social grooming is weaker than the trade-off of
lightweight social grooming. On the other hand, the time and effort of
elaborate methods are higher than lightweight methods. Additionally, my model
connects social grooming behaviour and social relationship forms with these
trade-offs. By analyzing the model, I show that individuals tend to use
elaborate social grooming to reinforce a few close relationships (e.g. face to
face and Chacma baboons). In contrast, people tend to use lightweight social
grooming to maintain many weak relationships (e.g. SNS). Humans with
lightweight methods who live in significantly complex societies use various

Dirichlet belief networks for topic structure learning
Recently, considerable research effort has been devoted to developing deep
architectures for topic models to learn topic structures. Although several deep
models have been proposed to learn better topic proportions of documents, how
to leverage the benefits of deep structures for learning word distributions of
topics has not yet been rigorously studied. Here we propose a new multi-layer
generative process on word distributions of topics, where each layer consists
of a set of topics and each topic is drawn from a mixture of the topics of the
layer above. As the topics in all layers can be directly interpreted by words,
the proposed model is able to discover interpretable topic hierarchies. As a
self-contained module, our model can be flexibly adapted to different kinds of
topic models to improve their modelling accuracy and interpretability.
Extensive experiments on text corpora demonstrate the advantages of the

Geographers and social scientists have long been interested in ranking and classifying the cities of the world. The cutting edge of this research is characterized by a recognition of the crucial
importance of information and, specifically, ICTs to citiesâ positions in the current Knowledge Economy. This chapter builds on recent âcyberspaceâ analyses of the global urban system by arguing for, and demonstrating empirically, the value of Web search engine data as a means of understanding cities as situated within, and constituted by, flows of digital information.
