    A hyper-heuristic based ensemble genetic programming approach for stochastic resource constrained project scheduling problem

    In project scheduling studies, to the best of our knowledge, the hyper-heuristic collaborative scheduling is first-time applied to project scheduling with random activity durations. A hyper-heuristic based ensemble genetic programming (HH-EGP) method is proposed for solving stochastic resource constrained project scheduling problem (SRCPSP) by evolving an ensemble of priority rules (PRs). The proposed approach features with (1) integrating the critical path method into the resource-based policy class to generate schedules; (2) improving the existing single hyper-heuristic project scheduling research to construct a suitable solution space for solving SRCPSP; and (3) bettering genetic evolution of each subpopulation from a decision ensemble with three different local searches in corporation with discriminant mutation and discriminant population renewal. In addition, a sequence voting mechanism is designed to deal with collaborative decision-making in the scheduling process for SRCPSP. The benchmark PSPLIB is performed to verify the advantage of the HH-EGP over heuristics, meta-heuristics and the single hyper-heuristic approaches

    Automated generation of constructive ordering heuristics for educational timetabling

    Construction heuristics play an important role in solving combinatorial optimization problems. These heuristics are usually used to create an initial solution to the problem which is improved using optimization techniques such as metaheuristics. For examination timetabling and university course timetabling problems essentially graph colouring heuristics have been used for this purpose. The process of deriving heuristics manually for educational timetabling is a time consuming task. Furthermore, according to the no free lunch theorem different heuristics will perform well for different problems and problem instances. Hence, automating the induction of construction heuristics will reduce the man hours involved in creating such heuristics, allow for the derivation of problem specific heuristics and possibly result in the derivation of heuristics that humans have not thought of. This paper presents generation construction hyper-heuristics for educational timetabling. The study investigates the automatic induction of two types of construction heuristics, namely, arithmetic heuristics and hierarchical heuristics. Genetic programming is used to evolve arithmetic heuristics. Genetic programming, genetic algorithms and the generation of random heuristic combinations is examined for the generation of hierarchical heuristics. The hyper-heuristics generating both types of heuristics are applied to the examination timetabling and the curriculum based university course timetabling problems. The evolved heuristics were found to perform much better than the existing graph colouring heuristics used for this domain. Furthermore, it was found that the while the arithmetic heuristics were more effective for the examination timetabling problem, the hierarchical heuristics produced better results than the arithmetic heuristics for the curriculum based course timetabling problem. Genetic algorithms proved to be the most effective at inducing hierarchical heuristics

    Genetic programming hyper-heuristic with vehicle collaboration for uncertain capacitated arc routing problem

    Due to its direct relevance to post-disaster operations, meter reading and civil refuse collection, the Uncertain Capacitated Arc Routing Problem (UCARP) is an important optimisation problem. Stochastic models are critical to study as they more accurately represent the real world than their deterministic counterparts. Although there have been extensive studies in solving routing problems under uncertainty, very few have considered UCARP, and none consider collaboration between vehicles to handle the negative effects of uncertainty. This article proposes a novel Solution Construction Procedure (SCP) that generates solutions to UCARP within a collaborative, multi-vehicle framework. It consists of two types of collaborative activities: one when a vehicle unexpectedly expends capacity (route failure), and the other during the refill process. Then, we propose a Genetic Programming Hyper-Heuristic (GPHH) algorithm to evolve the routing policy used within the collaborative framework. The experimental studies show that the new heuristic with vehicle collaboration and GP-evolved routing policy significantly outperforms the compared state-of-the-art algorithms on commonly studied test problems. This is shown to be especially true on instances with larger numbers of tasks and vehicles. This clearly shows the advantage of vehicle collaboration in handling the uncertain environment, and the effectiveness of the newly proposed algorithm

    A Classification of Hyper-heuristic Approaches

    The current state of the art in hyper-heuristic research comprises a set of approaches that share the common goal of automating the design and adaptation of heuristic methods to solve hard computational search problems. The main goal is to produce more generally applicable search methodologies. In this chapter we present and overview of previous categorisations of hyper-heuristics and provide a unified classification and definition which captures the work that is being undertaken in this field. We distinguish between two main hyper-heuristic categories: heuristic selection and heuristic generation. Some representative examples of each category are discussed in detail. Our goal is to both clarify the main features of existing techniques and to suggest new directions for hyper-heuristic research

    Evolving control rules for a dual-constrained job scheduling scenario

    Dispatching rules are often used for scheduling in semiconductor manufacturing due to the complexity and stochasticity of the problem. In the past, simulation-based Genetic Programming has been shown to be a powerful tool to automate the time-consuming and expensive process of designing such rules. However, the scheduling problems considered were usually only constrained by the capacity of the machines. In this paper, we extend this idea to dual-constrained flow shop scheduling, with machines and operators for loading and unloading to be scheduled simultaneously. We show empirically on a small test problem with parallel workstations, re-entrant flows and dynamic stochastic job arrival that the approach is able to generate dispatching rules that perform significantly better than benchmark rules from the literature

    Reputation-guided Evolutionary Scheduling Algorithm for Independent Tasks in inter-Clouds Environments

    Self-adaptation provides software with flexibility to different behaviours (configurations) it incorporates and the (semi-) autonomous ability to switch between these behaviours in response to changes. To empower clouds with the ability to capture and respond to quality feedback provided by users at runtime, we propose a reputation guided genetic scheduling algorithm for independent tasks. Current resource management services consider evolutionary strategies to improve the performance on resource allocation procedures or tasks scheduling algorithms, but they fail to consider the user as part of the scheduling process. Evolutionary computing offers different methods to find a near-optimal solution. In this paper we extended previous work with new optimisation heuristics for the problem of scheduling. We show how reputation is considered as an optimisation metric, and analyse how our metrics can be considered as upper bounds for others in the optimisation algorithm. By experimental comparison, we show our techniques can lead to optimised results.Peer Reviewe

    Hyper‐Heuristics and Metaheuristics for Selected Bio‐Inspired Combinatorial Optimization Problems

    Many decision and optimization problems arising in bioinformatics field are time demanding, and several algorithms are designed to solve these problems or to improve their current best solution approach. Modeling and implementing a new heuristic algorithm may be time‐consuming but has strong motivations: on the one hand, even a small improvement of the new solution may be worth the long time spent on the construction of a new method; on the other hand, there are problems for which good‐enough solutions are acceptable which could be achieved at a much lower computational cost. In the first case, specially designed heuristics or metaheuristics are needed, while the latter hyper‐heuristics can be proposed. The paper will describe both approaches in different domain problems

    Evolutionary methods for the design of dispatching rules for complex and dynamic scheduling problems

    Three methods, based on Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs), to support and automate the design of dispatching rules for complex and dynamic scheduling problems are proposed in this thesis. The first method employs an EA to search for problem instances on which a given dispatching rule performs badly. These instances can then be analysed to reveal weaknesses of the tested rule, thereby providing guidelines for the design of a better rule. The other two methods are hyper-heuristics, which employ an EA directly to generate effective dispatching rules. In particular, one hyper-heuristic is based on a specific type of EA, called Genetic Programming (GP), and generates a single rule from basic job and machine attributes, while the other generates a set of work centre-specific rules by selecting a (potentially) different rule for each work centre from a number of existing rules. Each of the three methods is applied to some complex and dynamic scheduling problem(s), and the resulting dispatching rules are tested against benchmark rules from the literature. In each case, the benchmark rules are shown to be outperformed by a rule (set) that results from the application of the respective method, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed methods
