Body sensor network for in-home personal healthcare
A body sensor network solution for personal healthcare under an indoor environment is developed. The system is capable of logging the physiological signals of human beings, tracking the orientations of human body, and monitoring the environmental attributes, which covers all necessary information for the personal healthcare in an indoor environment.
The major three chapters of this dissertation contain three subsystems in this work, each corresponding to one subsystem: BioLogger, PAMS and CosNet. Each chapter covers the background and motivation of the subsystem, the related theory, the hardware/software design, and the evaluation of the prototype’s performance
Technologies that assess the location of physical activity and sedentary behavior: a systematic review
Background: The location in which physical activity and sedentary behavior are performed can provide valuable behavioral information, both in isolation and synergistically with other areas of physical activity and sedentary behavior research. Global positioning systems (GPS) have been used in physical activity research to identify outdoor location; however, while GPS can receive signals in certain indoor environments, it is not able to provide room- or subroom-level location. On average, adults spend a high proportion of their time indoors. A measure of indoor location would, therefore, provide valuable behavioral information.
Objective: This systematic review sought to identify and critique technology which has been or could be used to assess the location of physical activity and sedentary behavior.
Methods: To identify published research papers, four electronic databases were searched using key terms built around behavior, technology, and location. To be eligible for inclusion, papers were required to be published in English and describe a wearable or portable technology or device capable of measuring location. Searches were performed up to February 4, 2015. This was supplemented by backward and forward reference searching. In an attempt to include novel devices which may not yet have made their way into the published research, searches were also performed using three Internet search engines. Specialized software was used to download search results and thus mitigate the potential pitfalls of changing search algorithms.
Results: A total of 188 research papers met the inclusion criteria. Global positioning systems were the most widely used location technology in the published research, followed by wearable cameras, and radio-frequency identification. Internet search engines identified 81 global positioning systems, 35 real-time locating systems, and 21 wearable cameras. Real-time locating systems determine the indoor location of a wearable tag via the known location of reference nodes. Although the type of reference node and location determination method varies between manufacturers, Wi-Fi appears to be the most popular method.
Conclusions: The addition of location information to existing measures of physical activity and sedentary behavior will provide important behavioral information
A review of smartphones based indoor positioning: challenges and applications
The continual proliferation of mobile devices has encouraged much effort in
using the smartphones for indoor positioning. This article is dedicated to
review the most recent and interesting smartphones based indoor navigation
systems, ranging from electromagnetic to inertia to visible light ones, with an
emphasis on their unique challenges and potential real-world applications. A
taxonomy of smartphones sensors will be introduced, which serves as the basis
to categorise different positioning systems for reviewing. A set of criteria to
be used for the evaluation purpose will be devised. For each sensor category,
the most recent, interesting and practical systems will be examined, with
detailed discussion on the open research questions for the academics, and the
practicality for the potential clients
The Internet of Robotic Things:A review of concept, added value and applications
The Internet of Robotic Things is an emerging vision that brings together pervasive sensors and objects with robotic and autonomous systems. This survey examines how the merger of robotic and Internet of Things technologies will advance the abilities of both the current Internet of Things and the current robotic systems, thus enabling the creation of new, potentially disruptive services. Map matching by using inertial sensors: literature review
This literature review aims to clarify what is known about map matching by
using inertial sensors and what are the requirements for map matching, inertial
sensors, placement and possible complementary position technology. The target
is to develop a wearable location system that can position itself within a complex
construction environment automatically with the aid of an accurate building model.
The wearable location system should work on a tablet computer which is running
an augmented reality (AR) solution and is capable of track and visualize 3D-CAD
models in real environment. The wearable location system is needed to support the
system in initialization of the accurate camera pose calculation and automatically
finding the right location in the 3D-CAD model. One type of sensor which does seem
applicable to people tracking is inertial measurement unit (IMU). The IMU sensors
in aerospace applications, based on laser based gyroscopes, are big but provide a
very accurate position estimation with a limited drift. Small and light units such
as those based on Micro-Electro-Mechanical (MEMS) sensors are becoming very
popular, but they have a significant bias and therefore suffer from large drifts and
require method for calibration like map matching. The system requires very little
fixed infrastructure, the monetary cost is proportional to the number of users, rather
than to the coverage area as is the case for traditional absolute indoor location

A model personal energy meter
Every day each of us consumes a significant amount of energy, both directly through transport, heating and use of appliances, and indirectly from our needs for the production of food, manufacture of goods and provision of services. This dissertation investigates a personal energy meter which can record and apportion an individual's energy usage in order to supply baseline information and incentives for reducing our environmental impact.
If the energy costs of large shared resources are split evenly without regard for individual consumption each person minimises his own losses by taking advantage of others. Context awareness offers the potential to change this balance and apportion energy costs to those who cause them to be incurred. This dissertation explores how sensor systems installed in many buildings today can be used to apportion energy consumption between users, including an evaluation of a range of strategies in a case study and elaboration of the overriding principles that are generally applicable. It also shows how second-order estimators combined with location data can provide a proxy for fine-grained sensing.
A key ingredient for apportionment mechanisms is data on energy usage. This may come from metering devices or buildings directly, or from profiling devices and using secondary indicators to infer their power state. A mechanism for profiling devices to determine the energy costs of specific activities, particularly applicable to shared programmable devices is presented which can make this process simpler and more accurate. By combining crowdsourced building-inventory information and a simple building energy model it is possible to estimate an individual's energy use disaggregated by device class with very little direct
sensing.
Contextual information provides crucial cues for apportioning the use and energy costs of resources, and one of the most valuable sources from which to infer context is location. A key ingredient for a personal energy meter is a low cost, low infrastructure location system that can be deployed on a truly global scale. This dissertation presents a description and evaluation of the new concept of inquiry-free Bluetooth tracking that has the potential to offer indoor location information with significantly less infrastructure and calibration than other systems.
Finally, a suitable architecture for a personal energy meter on a global scale is demonstrated using a mobile phone application to aggregate energy feeds based on the case studies and technologies developed
Winect: 3D Human Pose Tracking for Free-form Activity Using Commodity WiFi
WiFi human sensing has become increasingly attractive in enabling emerging human-computer interaction applications. The corresponding technique has gradually evolved from the classification of multiple activity types to more fine-grained tracking of 3D human poses. However, existing WiFi-based 3D human pose tracking is limited to a set of predefined activities. In this work, we present Winect, a 3D human pose tracking system for free-form activity using commodity WiFi devices. Our system tracks free-form activity by estimating a 3D skeleton pose that consists of a set of joints of the human body. In particular, we combine signal separation and joint movement modeling to achieve free-form activity tracking. Our system first identifies the moving limbs by leveraging the two-dimensional angle of arrival of the signals reflected off the human body and separates the entangled signals for each limb. Then, it tracks each limb and constructs a 3D skeleton of the body by modeling the inherent relationship between the movements of the limb and the corresponding joints. Our evaluation results show that Winect is environment-independent and achieves centimeter-level accuracy for free-form activity tracking under various challenging environments including the none-line-of-sight (NLoS) scenarios
