    Get PDF
Transient stability is important in power systems. Disturbances like faults need to be segregated to restore transient stability. A comprehensive review of fault diagnosing methods in the power transmission system is presented in this paper. Typically, voltage and current samples are deployed for analysis. Three tasks/topics; fault detection, classification, and location are presented separately to convey a more logical and comprehensive understanding of the concepts. Feature extractions, transformations with dimensionality reduction methods are discussed. Fault classification and location techniques largely use artificial intelligence (AI) and signal processing methods. After the discussion of overall methods and concepts, advancements and future aspects are discussed. Generalized strengths and weaknesses of different AI and machine learning-based algorithms are assessed. A comparison of different fault detection, classification, and location methods is also presented considering features, inputs, complexity, system used and results. This paper may serve as a guideline for the researchers to understand different methods and techniques in this field

Proton exchange membrane fuel cell degradation prediction based on Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems .

    No full text
International audienceThis paper studies the prediction of the output voltage reduction caused by degradation during nominal operating condition of a PEM fuel cell stack. It proposes a methodology based on Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS) which use as input the measures of the fuel cell output voltage during operation. The paper presents the architecture of the ANFIS and studies the selection of its parameters. As the output voltage cannot be represented as a periodical signal, the paper proposes to predict its temporal variation which is then used to construct the prediction of the output voltage. The paper also proposes to split this signal in two components: normal operation and external perturbations. The second component cannot be predicted and then it is not used to train the ANFIS. The performance of the prediction is evaluated on the output voltage of two fuel cells during a long term operation (1000 hours). Validation results suggest that the proposed technique is well adapted to predict degradation in fuel cell systems

This paper presents the performance investigation and adaptive neuro-fuzzy prediction of a building integrated straight-bladed vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT). An experiment was conducted with the VAWT integrated on the building rooftop. The coefficient of power of the VAWT was predicted using adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The input variables for the model development include the rotational speed, angular velocity, and tip speed ratio, while coefficient of power is the output. In the fuzzy logic of the fuzzy inference system (FIS), the parameter of the membership function is adjusted by the neural network in ANFIS. MATLAB/Simulink was used to implement this intelligent algorithm and the performance was investigated using root mean square error (RMSE) and coefficient of determinant (R2). In addition, the ANFIS technique precision was evaluated against the results of the experiment. The result obtained indicates that the maximum coefficient of power (Cpmax) was obtained at about Y = 250 mm above the building rooftop. Furthermore, it was also established that the developed ANFIS model is very effective and reliable in predicting the performance of building integrated straight-bladed VAWT

An Experimental-Intelligent Method to Predict Noise Value of Drilling in Dimension Stone Industry

    Get PDF
The noise of drilling in the dimension stone business is unbearable for both the workplace and the people who work there. In order to reduce the negative effects drilling has on the health of the environment, the drilling noise has to be measured, assessed, and controlled. The main purpose of this work is to investigate an experimental-intelligent method to predict the noise value of drilling in the dimension stone industry. For this purpose, 135 laboratory tests are designed on five types of rocks (four types of hard rock and one type of soft rock): and their results are measured in the first step. In the second step, due to the unpredicted and uncertain issues in this case, artificial intelligence (AI) approaches are applied, and the modeling is conducted using three intelligent systems (IS): namely an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system-SCM (ANFIS-SCM): an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system-FCM (ANFIS-FCM): and the radial basis function network (RBF) neural network. 75% of the samples are considered for training, and the rest for testing. Several models are constructed, and the results indicate that although there is no significant difference between the models according to the performance indices, the proposed construction of ANFIS-SCM can be considered as an efficient tool in the evaluation of drilling noise. Finally, several scenarios are designed with different input modes, and the results obtained prove that the types of rock and the drill bits are more important than the operational characteristics of the machine

Air pollution is one of main challenging issues nowadays that researchers have been trying to address. The emissions of vehicle engine exhausts are responsible for 50 percent of air pollution. Different types of emissions emit from vehicles including carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, NOX, and so on. There is a tendency to develop strategies of engine control which work in a fast way. Accomplishing this task will result in a decrease in emissions which coupled with the fuel composition can bring about the best performance of the vehicle engine.Controlling the Air-Fuel Ratio (AFR) is necessary, because the AFR has an enormous impact on the effectiveness of the fuel and reduction of emissions. This paper is aimed at reviewing the recent studies on the prediction and control of the AFR, as a bulk of research works with different approaches, was conducted in this area. These approaches include both classical and modern methods, namely Artificial Neural Networks (ANN), Fuzzy Logic, and Neuro-Fuzzy Systems are described in this paper. The strength and the weakness of individual approaches will be discussed at length

Modelling, simulation and proportional integral control of a pneumatic motor

Researchers have shown a considerable amount of interest in the control of pneumatic drives over the past decade, for two main reasons, firstly, the response of the system is very slow and it is difficult to attain set points due to hysteresis and secondly, the dynamic model of the system is highly non-linear, which greatly complicates controller design and development. To address these problems, two streams of research effort have evolved and these are: (i) using conventional methods to develop a modelling and control strategy, (ii) adopting a strategy that does not require mathematical model of the system. This paper presents an investigation into the modelling and control of an air motor incorporating a pneumatic equivalent of the electric H-bridge. The pneumatic H-bridge has been devised for speed and direction control of the motor. The system characteristics are divided into three regions, namely low speed, medium speed and high speed. The system is highly nonlinear in the low speed region, for which neuro-modelling, simulation and control strategies are developed

ANFIS Models for Fault Detection and Isolation in the Drive Train of a Wind Turbine

    Get PDF
The paper aims to improve the fault detection and isolation process in wind turbine systems by developing intelligent systems that can effectively identify and isolate faults. Specifically, the paper focuses on the drive train part of a horizontal axis wind turbine machine. The proposed fault diagnostic strategy is designed using an adaptive neural fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), which is a type of artificial neural network that combines the advantages of both fuzzy logic and neural networks. The ANFIS is used to generate residuals that occur after faults have been detected, and to determine the appropriate thresholds needed to correctly detect faults. The simulation results show that the proposed fault diagnostic strategy is effective in detecting faults in the drive train part of the wind turbine system. By using intelligent systems such as ANFIS, the fault detection process can be automated and streamlined, potentially reducing maintenance costs and improving the overall performance and efficiency of wind turbine systems

Wind Turbine condition monitoring can detect anomalies in turbine performance which have the potential to result in unexpected failure and financial loss. This study examines common Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) data over a period of 20 months for 21 pitch regulated 2.3 MW turbines and is presented in three manuscripts. First, power curve monitoring is targeted applying various types of Artificial Neural Networks to increase modeling accuracy. It is shown how the proposed method can significantly improve network reliability compared with existing models. Then, an advance technique is utilized to create a smoother dataset for network training followed by establishing dynamic ANFIS network. At this stage, designed network aims to predict power generation in future hours. Finally, a recursive principal component analysis is performed to extract significant features to be used as input parameters of the network. A novel fusion technique is then employed to build an advanced model to make predictions of turbines performance with favorably low errors
