    Scattering Center Extraction and Recognition Based on ESPRIT Algorithm

    Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) generates high quality radar images even in low visibility. And it provides important physical features for space target recognition and location. This thesis focuses on ISAR rapid imaging, scattering center information extraction, and target classification. Based on the principle of Fourier imaging, the backscattering field of radar target is obtained by physical optics (PO) algorithm, and the relation between scattering field and objective function is deduced. According to the resolution formula, the incident parameters of electromagnetic wave are set reasonably. The interpolation method is used to realize three-dimensional (3D) simulation of aircraft target, and the results are compared with direct imaging results. CLEAN algorithm extracts scattering center information effectively. But due to the limitation of resolution parameters, traditional imaging canโ€™t meet the actual demand. Therefore, the super-resolution Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Techniques (ESPRIT) algorithm is used to obtain spatial target location information. The signal subspace and noise subspace are orthogonal to each other. By combining spatial smoothing method with ESPRIT algorithm, the physical characteristics of geometric target scattering center are obtained accurately. In particular, the proposed method is validated on complex 3D aircraft targets and it proves that this method is applied to most scattering mechanisms. The distribution of scattering centers reflects the geometric information of the target. Therefore, the electromagnetic image to be recognized and ESPRIT image are matched by the domain matching method. And the classification results under different radii are obtained. In addition, because the neural network can extract rich image features, the improved ALEX network is used to classify and recognize target data processed by ESPRIT. It proves that ESPRIT algorithm can be used to expand the existing datasets and prepare for future identification of targets in real environments. Final a visual classification system is constructed to visually display the results

    Improved Dictionary Formation and Search for Synthetic Aperture Radar Canonical Shape Feature Extraction

    ATR requires detecting and estimating distinguishing characteristics of a target of interest. Radar data provides range and amplitude information; range distinguishes location relative to the radar whereas amplitude determines strength of reflectivity. Strong reflecting scattering features of targets are detected from a combination of radar returns, or radar PH data. Strong scatterers are modeled as canonical shapes (a plate, dihedral, trihedral, sphere, cylinder, or top-hat). Modeling the scatterers as canonical shapes takes the high dimensional radar PH from each scatterer and parameterizes the scatterer according to its location, size, and orientation. This thesis e ciently estimates the parameters of canonical shapes from radar PH data using dictionary search. Target scattering peaks are detected using 2-D SAR imaging. The parameters are estimated with decreased computation and improved accuracy relative to previous algorithms through reduced SAR image processing, informed parameter subspace bounding, and more e cient dictionary clustering. The effects of the collection fight path and radar parameters are investigated to permit pre-collection error analysis. The results show that even for a limited collection geometry, the dictionary estimates the canonical shape scatterer parameters well

    Phase History Decomposition for Efficient Scatterer Classification in SAR Imagery

    A new theory and algorithm for scatterer classification in SAR imagery is presented. The automated classification process is operationally efficient compared to existing image segmentation methods requiring human supervision. The algorithm reconstructs coarse resolution subimages from subdomains of the SAR phase history. It analyzes local peaks in the subimages to determine locations and geometric shapes of scatterers in the scene. Scatterer locations are indicated by the presence of a stable peak in all subimages for a given subaperture, while scatterer shapes are indicated by changes in pixel intensity. A new multi-peak model is developed from physical models of electromagnetic scattering to predict how pixel intensities behave for different scatterer shapes. The algorithm uses a least squares classifier to match observed pixel behavior to the model. Classification accuracy improves with increasing fractional bandwidth and is subject to the high-frequency and wide-aperture approximations of the multi-peak model. For superior computational efficiency, an integrated fast SAR imaging technique is developed to combine the coarse resolution subimages into a final SAR image having fine resolution. Finally, classification results are overlaid on the SAR image so that analysts can deduce the significance of the scatterer shape information within the image context

Introduction of machine learning to vessel detection significantly enhanced the performance and efficiency of the detection, but a substantial majority of studies focused on modifying the object detector algorithm. As the fundamental enhancement of the detection performance would be nearly impossible without accurate training data of vessels, this study implemented AIS information containing real-time information of vesselโ€™s movement in order to propose a robust algorithm which acquires the training data of vessels in an automated manner. As AIS information was irregularly and discretely obtained, the exact target interpolation time for each vessel was precisely determined, followed by the implementation of Kalman filter, which mitigates the measurement error of AIS sensor. In addition, as the velocity of each vessel renders an imprint inside the SAR image named as Doppler frequency shift, it was calibrated by restoring the elliptic satellite orbit from the satellite state vector and estimating the distance between the satellite and the target vessel. From the calibrated position of the AIS sensor inside the corresponding SAR image, training data was directly obtained via internal allocation of the AIS sensor in each vessel. For fishing boats, separate information system named as VPASS was applied for the identical procedure of training data retrieval. Training data of vessels obtained via the automated training data procurement algorithm was evaluated by a conventional object detector, for three detection evaluating parameters: precision, recall and F1 score. All three evaluation parameters from the proposed training data acquisition significantly exceeded that from the manual acquisition. The major difference between two training datasets was demonstrated in the inshore regions and in the vicinity of strong scattering vessels in which land artifacts, ships and the ghost signals derived from them were indiscernible by visual inspection.     A report is presented on a preliminary design of a Synthetic Array Radar (SAR) intended for experimental use with the space shuttle program. The radar is called Earth Resources Shuttle Imaging Radar (ERSIR). Its primary purpose is to determine the usefulness of SAR in monitoring and managing earth resources. The design of the ERSIR, along with tradeoffs made during its evolution is discussed. The ERSIR consists of a flight sensor for collecting the raw radar data and a ground sensor used both for reducing these radar data to images and for extracting earth resources information from the data. The flight sensor consists of two high powered coherent, pulse radars, one that operates at L and the other at X-band. Radar data, recorded on tape can be either transmitted via a digital data link to a ground terminal or the tape can be delivered to the ground station after the shuttle lands.     Biomass Representation in Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry Data Sets

    This work makes an attempt to explain the origin, features and potential applications of the elevation bias of the synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) datasets over areas covered by vegetation. The rapid development of radar-based remote sensing methods, such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and InSAR, has provided an alternative to the photogrammetry and LiDAR for determining the third dimension of topographic surfaces. The InSAR method has proved to be so effective and productive that it allowed, within eleven days of the space shuttle mission, for acquisition of data to develop a three-dimensional model of almost the entire land surface of our planet. This mission is known as the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Scientists across the geosciences were able to access the great benefits of uniformity, high resolution and the most precise digital elevation model (DEM) of the Earth like never before for their a wide variety of scientific and practical inquiries. Unfortunately, InSAR elevations misrepresent the surface of the Earth in places where there is substantial vegetation cover. This is a systematic error of unknown, yet limited (by the vertical extension of vegetation) magnitude. Up to now, only a limited number of attempts to model this error source have been made. However, none offer a robust remedy, but rather partial or case-based solutions. More work in this area of research is needed as the number of airborne and space-based InSAR elevation models has been steadily increasing over the last few years, despite strong competition from LiDAR and optical methods. From another perspective, however, this elevation bias, termed here as the โ€œbiomass impenetrabilityโ€, creates a great opportunity to learn about the biomass. This may be achieved due to the fact that the impenetrability can be considered a collective response to a few factors originating in 3D space that encompass the outermost boundaries of vegetation. The biomass, presence in InSAR datasets or simply the biomass impenetrability, is the focus of this research. The report, presented in a sequence of sections, gradually introduces terminology, physical and mathematical fundamentals commonly used in describing the propagation of electromagnetic waves, including the Maxwell equations. The synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and InSAR as active remote sensing methods are summarised. In subsequent steps, the major InSAR data sources and data acquisition systems, past and present, are outlined. Various examples of the InSAR datasets, including the SRTM C- and X-band elevation products and INTERMAP Inc. IFSAR digital terrain/surface models (DTM/DSM), representing diverse test sites in the world are used to demonstrate the presence and/or magnitude of the biomass impenetrability in the context of different types of vegetation โ€“ usually forest. Also, results of investigations carried out by selected researchers on the elevation bias in InSAR datasets and their attempts at mathematical modelling are reviewed. In recent years, a few researchers have suggested that the magnitude of the biomass impenetrability is linked to gaps in the vegetation cover. Based on these hints, a mathematical model of the tree and the forest has been developed. Three types of gaps were identified; gaps in the landscape-scale forest areas (Type 1), e.g. forest fire scares and logging areas; a gap between three trees forming a triangle (Type 2), e.g. depending on the shape of tree crowns; and gaps within a tree itself (Type 3). Experiments have demonstrated that Type 1 gaps follow the power-law density distribution function. One of the most useful features of the power-law distributed phenomena is their scale-independent property. This property was also used to model Type 3 gaps (within the tree crown) by assuming that these gaps follow the same distribution as the Type 1 gaps. A hypothesis was formulated regarding the penetration depth of the radar waves within the canopy. It claims that the depth of penetration is simply related to the quantisation level of the radar backscattered signal. A higher level of bits per pixels allows for capturing weaker signals arriving from the lower levels of the tree crown. Assuming certain generic and simplified shapes of tree crowns including cone, paraboloid, sphere and spherical cap, it was possible to model analytically Type 2 gaps. The Monte Carlo simulation method was used to investigate relationships between the impenetrability and various configurations of a modelled forest. One of the most important findings is that impenetrability is largely explainable by the gaps between trees. A much less important role is played by the penetrability into the crown cover. Another important finding is that the impenetrability strongly correlates with the vegetation density. Using this feature, a method for vegetation density mapping called the mean maximum impenetrability (MMI) method is proposed. Unlike the traditional methods of forest inventories, the MMI method allows for a much more realistic inventory of vegetation cover, because it is able to capture an in situ or current situation on the ground, but not for areas that are nominally classified as a โ€œforest-to-beโ€. The MMI method also allows for the mapping of landscape variation in the forest or vegetation density, which is a novel and exciting feature of the new 3D remote sensing (3DRS) technique. Besides the inventory-type applications, the MMI method can be used as a forest change detection method. For maximum effectiveness of the MMI method, an object-based change detection approach is preferred. A minimum requirement for the MMI method is a time-lapsed reference dataset in the form, for example, of an existing forest map of the area of interest, or a vegetation density map prepared using InSAR datasets. Preliminary tests aimed at finding a degree of correlation between the impenetrability and other types of passive and active remote sensing data sources, including TerraSAR-X, NDVI and PALSAR, proved that the method most sensitive to vegetation density was the Japanese PALSAR - L-band SAR system. Unfortunately, PALSAR backscattered signals become very noisy for impenetrability below 15 m. This means that PALSAR has severe limitations for low loadings of the biomass per unit area. The proposed applications of the InSAR data will remain indispensable wherever cloud cover obscures the sky in a persistent manner, which makes suitable optical data acquisition extremely time-consuming or nearly impossible. A limitation of the MMI method is due to the fact that the impenetrability is calculated using a reference DTM, which must be available beforehand. In many countries around the world, appropriate quality DTMs are still unavailable. A possible solution to this obstacle is to use a DEM that was derived using P-band InSAR elevations or LiDAR. It must be noted, however, that in many cases, two InSAR datasets separated by time of the same area are sufficient for forest change detection or similar applications
